24/25 Magic Presser

Post by false9 »

It's time time again, friends. Let's begin a quick recap of last season.

It was an up and down season. We were unable to replicate the success of the previous season. We were in a bit of a limbo- Boban wasn't ready to be a contributor yet and I didn't see us as a true contender. We thought sending out Tobias Harris for Jarvis Chambers would be a slight upgrade, but at the end of the day it was probably a lateral move. The Knicks eliminated us in seven games and we were left to ponder the future.

Looking at our team the past few seasons, it became evident that scoring was an issue. With that in mind, we decided to seize on the opportunity to bring in Andrew Wiggins at great cost. We're grateful for the time Desean Hawkins spent here, but Wiggins is a clear upgrade. We also traded for Biyombo to bring a defensive presence on the inside. Also coming back into the fold is Scott Ramos- his distribution will be helpful. Coupled with the continued progress of Josh Jackson and the growth of Boban via our team's proprietary Player Enhancing Development System, I think there's..something here. Whether that something is a deep playoff run or another first round exit remains to be seen.

Nerlens Noel and Scott Ramos will join the starting five with Wiggins, Biyombo, and Jackon, but expect heavy minutes off the bench for Boban and Trae.

The floor is open for questions.

If you could do it again, would you still make the Biyombo trade, or would you have brought 26 million more to free agency, knowing that at least through the first two rounds of UFA, you would've had one more max contract to offer?

Having the benefit of hindsight, we probably wouldn't have done that move if we knew we had a shot of Wiggins. The flip side is, a lot of our non max targets were given huge contracts. In the end, we're happy with Biyombo here.

You have a lot of expectations for your rookie Boban, but what are your thoughts on Joe Sherrill?

He's a long term development project- expect him to be a redshirt this year.

How confident do you feel that you have the right supporting cast around Wiggins?

I guess I'd describe it as lukewarm for now- the younger players still have room to fill out, but I'm willing to be patient with them.

You have been an advocate for a relegation/promotion league for a while. How would you implement this in the league if you could play Sim Gawd.

Well, for those unfamiliar, I am blatantly stealing this idea from soccer (or football if you want to be a snob about it). The league would be two tiers- I'm thinking 18 for the top league (NBA) and 12 for the bottom (D league). At the end of the season, the bottom 3 from the NBA would be relegated to the D League and the top 3 from the D League would be promoted. We would still have playoffs, but I'm not sure what's preferable to the current format vs something similar to Champions League.

There's a a lot more I'd tie onto this- elimination of the draft (all rookies would be treated as free agents), elimination of max salaries and points limits on transactions, points tied to salary and finishes in the standings/playoffs. It would be ambitious and definitely different from the existing format.

Where do you envision the Magic finishing in the playoff race this season? Will your team make a run in the playoffs against the top teams out East or will they prematurely fizzle out in the first round again?

Okay, in that case let's start with your Division. Your team started off strong, there's no looking past that. Which teams in your division are the biggest threat to your team's success this season?

I think Wig will continue to be the class of the Division- there's a wealth of talent on that team.
