ReviewBanana: Trades of the SLOE 1986-1987 Season

Post by AngryBanana »

Welcome back to another addition of ReviewBanana, this year we are going all in. One review. Everyone knows the rules. And if the trades are good I will go in and review them. I will also review them if they are bad to be fair... but I will not give it a good score. Anyway's Frankie, where are we at again? Oh NPBSL headquarters... where the heck is that? Why are we here Frankie? What did you get me into... Whatever, let's just do the reviews and get it over with so that we can go back to doing whatever other reviews that we were doing before. What was that other thing we were doing??? Here we go. Trades at NPBSL Headquarters. One Review. Everyone knows the rules.

I accept. Thank you for your patience everyone, may you all receive what you are looking for from this.
Ok so we are here at the first stop of this review tour we have going today and we are at Bullet's in DC, they are at the intersection of Knicks, Jazz, and Sonics. Now I usually don't do these types of trades, because I don't like doing the one's involving picks. It involves more research, but it caused so much problems I felt I had to do this (even if I was the one that started the whole damn hoopla anyway.) Everyone was talking about. AB you gotta go here. AB the trade. AB you caused this problem. AB this, AB that. I got tired of it Frankie, so I am here to review it now that it is legal. I am going to only do certain portions, because I think some players moved on, picks were traded, IDK it all over the place in there.

Firstly, the Knicks got another guy in Buck Williams who appears to be going great next to King and Moses. Holy cow is that a big three for ya that could compete with the likes of real life LeBron, Wade, and Bosh. The add has created a 9-5 team to date that adds a new athletic dimension to this team. The only problem that the team would have had regardless is depth. If one of the three guys, can the Knicks survive? And there are a lot of haymakers coming out of the league here early. I like it in the sense of going all in.

Next the Jazz get the #3 pick that turns into Dennis Rodman (the GM's favorite NBA player) and and an 88 first round pick. That is a solid return while also moving up in the draft, basically selling two picks for one that they really like. The team is pretty set on a core so losing next years first isn't terrible if all pans out and you can only have so many players to insure, it strikes me as a real life Derik Queen trade, where if he develops into the guy everyone expects you are getting a player that puts more pressure on the other pick than Rodman. So not a bad move if he pans out, but this is a emotional trade I think more than a sensical trade potentially.

Next we have Washington, who get two first round picks to reset and a contributor in Kelser who is a solid rotation guy for a post Buck Williams world. It's a solid return, albeit illegal.

Finally the Sonics. Man, they really thought they were going to tank huh? That guy is an idiot. They get three picks from this draft and 10 points for two picks that were not his to begin with!? Yes. All the yes. However, a top three pick is still pretty nice to look at. He did turn two of those picks into Nate McMillan and Buck Johnson. McMillan I think is adding more to the Sonics than Rodman is currently to the Jazz which is a plus, playing as a versatile wing. Buck hasn't played yet so is a stash piece for now, especially with the Sonics playing well currently.

Knicks: B+
Jazz: B
Sonics: B- (because it involed my pick)
Bullets: D+ (because it's illegal)

Now we move over to the Bucks to try this slimy pie I keep hearing everyone talk about. Little known fact, I heard that they run a second joint out in Philly under a different name. Where the Philly establishment basically develops all of these products and then trades them to the Bucks... It's wild Frankie. I don't know why the police haven't come out here and stopped it yet.

Here we have the Bucks getting Joe Barry Carroll for sending out a top 4 pick and points. It makes sense for both sides I guess. Wait.. no it doesn't... The Bucks are sending out the older guy? Philly is not the one building a young core? The Bucks get a reset and a stud young player in Jeff Hornacek while also getting 10 points. I can't. I guess it is one less player the 76ers have to worry about insuring and they can die on their own without regret. 76ers start out under .500 and the Bucks don't play the #4 pick and have 8-3 record...

Frankie, I told you I hate these draft pick trades and were back at the Bullets other place doing another illegal operation? Yeah looks like it...

Blazers are again involved in this one. They sent out Hubbard and Cartwright to get Utah's #8 (Ron Tarply) and Alex English. English is a bucket who appears to maybe have taken a step back this season, however maybe Wig expected this by putting him in a reserve role. The pick was later moved so I am not looking to deeply at that for this.

The Bullets got Cartwright, Griffith, Hubbard, and 15 points in return for Larry Nance, Darrel Griffith, and a first round pick. I don't know... I get it that Griffith is a purple player, but I really like Nance and I think this is A LOT to give up to pivot to a different build rather than a full on rebuild. I liked their other illegal trade better.

Pistons get Nance, Henderson and Sparrow. I like the move for the reason I don't like it for the Blazers. They are loosing a p/p current player, but they add one of the best bigs in the league to a team that was probably a Nance away from being a really good team.

Blazers: D (Also blame them for missing the RFA nonsense)
Bullets: C-
Pistons: A-

Ok, let's get out of that cesspool that is draft day trades, now were out in Atlanta looking at what is happening with the Bulls and Hawks. I also don't know how I feel about RFA deals yet, but at least it isn't constantly moving parts like draft day trades can be. So were going to test it out.

The Bulls send out their young stud rebounder in LaSalle Thompson for two first round picks. I like it from their end. I think they realize that their build, as it was, may be coming to an end. They are hitting that soft reset, slowly tearing apart the team that had been very good for the past few seasons. The two hawks picks will be great, especially if they accept that LTS trade that was floated out there. Also, if they become inactive agin it is another plus. I like their bet here for a guy who is good, but a robin at best.

The Hawks get another young player to add to this very blue core. They now have six players who are b/b and under 27. That is unsustainable. However, they are putting it all out there and Im sure going to move the guys they want to consolidate into something else. For what it is worth, LaSalle has been a great add to this roster. I just don't know if he is a Max worthy player for this team.

This trade ultimately won't be answered today but maybe once these picks materialize.

I will come back and review this one only if I need to, but as of now I feel good about the deal personally. I got a wing player that can play both ways and is ready to play now. As a GM who was tired of floundering in the draft lotto (Frye that place) I wanted a guy like Lloyd. Bucks get another young guy that they can hope develops. But we also get A+'s for doing a legal RFA trade

From a personal standpoint, I both love and hate this trade for the Nets. I no longer get to see Dawkins. However, he was such a big part of this team since the reset I know it was hard for RPF to send him out. He gets back Oakley and Ballard. Oakley is coming in for the future. A young big man who will bully other teams for a while. He also has some room to grow, playing bench mins right now, and playing like a solid bench contributor. Ballard hurts a little though. He is 31 and coming off the bench right now. He is probably the worst contract on this team, but may have been the only way the Nets could get Oakley. Maybe with more mins we could see him contribute more so that the nets can either play better or move him. This may help the team long term from a money standpoint but still hurts.

For the Clippers this was all about win now. They get Dawkins, slip him in the starting lineup and autopilot until the playoffs at least. He is the best player in this deal right now, and behind only Theus and Mitchell in the form of importance for this team. Great job by the Clippers, and shows how to best flip a young piece to get a contributor now.

Nets: B
