ReviewBanana: Trades of the SLOE 1986-1987 Season

Post by AngryBanana »

Welcome back to another addition of ReviewBanana, this year we are going all in. One review. Everyone knows the rules. And if the trades are good I will go in and review them. I will also review them if they are bad to be fair... but I will not give it a good score. Anyway's Frankie, where are we at again? Oh NPBSL headquarters... where the heck is that? Why are we here Frankie? What did you get me into... Whatever, let's just do the reviews and get it over with so that we can go back to doing whatever other reviews that we were doing before. What was that other thing we were doing??? Here we go. Trades at NPBSL Headquarters. One Review. Everyone knows the rules.

I accept. Thank you for your patience everyone, may you all receive what you are looking for from this.
Ok so we are here at the first stop of this review tour we have going today and we are at Bullet's in DC, they are at the intersection of Knicks, Jazz, and Sonics. Now I usually don't do these types of trades, because I don't like doing the one's involving picks. It involves more research, but it caused so much problems I felt I had to do this (even if I was the one that started the whole damn hoopla anyway.) Everyone was talking about. AB you gotta go here. AB the trade. AB you caused this problem. AB this, AB that. I got tired of it Frankie, so I am here to review it now that it is legal. I am going to only do certain portions, because I think some players moved on, picks were traded, IDK it all over the place in there.

Firstly, the Knicks got another guy in Buck Williams who appears to be going great next to King and Moses. Holy cow is that a big three for ya that could compete with the likes of real life LeBron, Wade, and Bosh. The add has created a 9-5 team to date that adds a new athletic dimension to this team. The only problem that the team would have had regardless is depth. If one of the three guys, can the Knicks survive? And there are a lot of haymakers coming out of the league here early. I like it in the sense of going all in.

Next the Jazz get the #3 pick that turns into Dennis Rodman (the GM's favorite NBA player) and and an 88 first round pick. That is a solid return while also moving up in the draft, basically selling two picks for one that they really like. The team is pretty set on a core so losing next years first isn't terrible if all pans out and you can only have so many players to insure, it strikes me as a real life Derik Queen trade, where if he develops into the guy everyone expects you are getting a player that puts more pressure on the other pick than Rodman. So not a bad move if he pans out, but this is a emotional trade I think more than a sensical trade potentially.

Next we have Washington, who get two first round picks to reset and a contributor in Kelser who is a solid rotation guy for a post Buck Williams world. It's a solid return, albeit illegal.

Finally the Sonics. Man, they really thought they were going to tank huh? That guy is an idiot. They get three picks from this draft and 10 points for two picks that were not his to begin with!? Yes. All the yes. However, a top three pick is still pretty nice to look at. He did turn two of those picks into Nate McMillan and Buck Johnson. McMillan I think is adding more to the Sonics than Rodman is currently to the Jazz which is a plus, playing as a versatile wing. Buck hasn't played yet so is a stash piece for now, especially with the Sonics playing well currently.

Knicks: B+
Jazz: B
Sonics: B- (because it involed my pick)
Bullets: D+ (because it's illegal)

Now we move over to the Bucks to try this slimy pie I keep hearing everyone talk about. Little known fact, I heard that they run a second joint out in Philly under a different name. Where the Philly establishment basically develops all of these products and then trades them to the Bucks... It's wild Frankie. I don't know why the police haven't come out here and stopped it yet.

Here we have the Bucks getting Joe Barry Carroll for sending out a top 4 pick and points. It makes sense for both sides I guess. Wait.. no it doesn't... The Bucks are sending out the older guy? Philly is not the one building a young core? The Bucks get a reset and a stud young player in Jeff Hornacek while also getting 10 points. I can't. I guess it is one less player the 76ers have to worry about insuring and they can die on their own without regret. 76ers start out under .500 and the Bucks don't play the #4 pick and have 8-3 record...

Frankie, I told you I hate these draft pick trades and were back at the Bullets other place doing another illegal operation? Yeah looks like it...

Blazers are again involved in this one. They sent out Hubbard and Cartwright to get Utah's #8 (Ron Tarply) and Alex English. English is a bucket who appears to maybe have taken a step back this season, however maybe Wig expected this by putting him in a reserve role. The pick was later moved so I am not looking to deeply at that for this.

The Bullets got Cartwright, Griffith, Hubbard, and 15 points in return for Larry Nance, Darrel Griffith, and a first round pick. I don't know... I get it that Griffith is a purple player, but I really like Nance and I think this is A LOT to give up to pivot to a different build rather than a full on rebuild. I liked their other illegal trade better.

Pistons get Nance, Henderson and Sparrow. I like the move for the reason I don't like it for the Blazers. They are loosing a p/p current player, but they add one of the best bigs in the league to a team that was probably a Nance away from being a really good team.

Ok, let's get out of that cesspool that is draft day trades, now were out in Atlanta looking at what is happening with the Bulls and Hawks. I also don't know how I feel about RFA deals yet, but at least it isn't constantly moving parts like draft day trades can be. So were going to test it out.

The Bulls send out their young stud rebounder in LaSalle Thompson for two first round picks. I like it from their end. I think they realize that their build, as it was, may be coming to an end. They are hitting that soft reset, slowly tearing apart the team that had been very good for the past few seasons. The two hawks picks will be great, especially if they accept that LTS trade that was floated out there. Also, if they become inactive agin it is another plus. I like their bet here for a guy who is good, but a robin at best.

The Hawks get another young player to add to this very blue core. They now have six players who are b/b and under 27. That is unsustainable. However, they are putting it all out there and Im sure going to move the guys they want to consolidate into something else. For what it is worth, LaSalle has been a great add to this roster. I just don't know if he is a Max worthy player for this team.

This trade ultimately won't be answered today but maybe once these picks materialize.

I will come back and review this one only if I need to, but as of now I feel good about the deal personally. I got a wing player that can play both ways and is ready to play now. As a GM who was tired of floundering in the draft lotto (Frye that place) I wanted a guy like Lloyd. Bucks get another young guy that they can hope develops. But we also get A+'s for doing a legal RFA trade

From a personal standpoint, I both love and hate this trade for the Nets. I no longer get to see Dawkins. However, he was such a big part of this team since the reset I know it was hard for RPF to send him out. He gets back Oakley and Ballard. Oakley is coming in for the future. A young big man who will bully other teams for a while. He also has some room to grow, playing bench mins right now, and playing like a solid bench contributor. Ballard hurts a little though. He is 31 and coming off the bench right now. He is probably the worst contract on this team, but may have been the only way the Nets could get Oakley. Maybe with more mins we could see him contribute more so that the nets can either play better or move him. This may help the team long term from a money standpoint but still hurts.

For the Clippers this was all about win now. They get Dawkins, slip him in the starting lineup and autopilot until the playoffs at least. He is the best player in this deal right now, and behind only Theus and Mitchell in the form of importance for this team. Great job by the Clippers, and shows how to best flip a young piece to get a contributor now.

Ok, this is a decent two way trade. Ignore most of what is going on in this trade, what it is basically is Steve Johnson for Roy Tarpley. Bulls go further into a rebuild and get a rookie player and send out a win now player in Johnson. Wig gets a guy who can slide in at PF and allow him to try to move English, and have a long term solution for his PF slot. I like it for both sides, but odd that two 2nds were included. It was a good find for wig I think and good job by LogPMess to get someone young to try to build around.

Bullets are trying to buy a guy to play for them when they thought they were still competing. Not a bad price to be buying a guy, but ultimately it did not work out. I would have given this a higher grade at the time of the trade, but because he is being moved again, it lowers for the Bullets..

Does anyone have more movement in this league with trades than the Bullets, my goodness. This trade has the Nets getting Bill Cartwright (who was someone I was eyeing at the time for 15 points and matching cap sending out elsewhere. Bullets get Buck and Jim. Where I think Spanarkel was an attempt to get a glue guy and try to have him play like he was for Wig? and Buck is a rookie who is worth seeing if he develops into anything. Not a bad thought process if you are stuck not competing but wanting to try to get some wins. The Supersonics get Greg Ballard which I guess is to help with their rebuild? I thought they would have gotten points in this deal. IDK, his deal falls off the books after this year so there is that, but he will not be able to move him again with the way he is playing.

The Bulls exodus continues. The Warriors sense that their team may be better than they expected and decided not to listen to the moves going out but rather the moves to bring in. They get Natt while not giving up a lot. The Bulls send out a win now guy for their pick, and ability to own their draft pick again. Darth would approve this trade full stop. The fact that they did not send any points is further impressive on the bulls side.

Alright Mike chill. Here is another deal where he is churning players out. Cooper is sent to the Warriors to further build out a rotation to fight in the West while giving up another pick that wasn't his, a backup PG, and 15 points really. Bullets are looking to ship out Leavell again for more points now, so let's see if that happens. I don't think Cooper has made the degree of impact that Natt has but it not a failure by any means on his team (plus the concussion didn't help anything with that.) I really like what the Warriors are doing going all in, but also not burning their own reserves like I did in my deals lately.

Will this be the last Bullets trade? Find out next time on ReviewBanana! Further into the selling off goes Mike and he sends out Griffith, who has been passed around quite a bit lately, to the Nuggets. He manages to barely make this deal work, getting up to 15 players in this deal, and gets mostly HotRod Williams out of the deal and a few other guys that will not stay on the roster, or he will hope don't die in TC. It seems a little light for a return on Griffith, but I think Bullets assessed it was the best they would get. For the Nuggets, they are trying to win now and get a guy to go with Clyde. It just has not quite materialized and with it being Griffith's last year on his deal IDK what the Nuggets will plan to do if they continue to not win. That being said, Griffith is probably playing like the second best player on this roster.

I do not regret this trade. I do regret how much I paid as it was a hasty talks that I sent in a moment of weakness and BigD was happy to accept. I get my big to go with Hakeem, and move Nique to SF while also having a good contract for the next few seasons on the books. I thought about Ralph instead, but I did not want to deal with a max contract on the books after this season with him. BigD gets my future that hopefully doesn't involve me crashing out.

I think I actually like this for both sides. I know that I recently bashed Digi for going all in, but with this move it helps him further be good now and in the near future (if he does what he is supposed to). Meanwhile the Kings will bank on them not doing that and having a pick that will be guaranteed a top 5 pick. Any deal that involves the 76ers and it involving a future pick gets an A until they prove that they are more reliable.

I see deals like this one and the 76ers deal and I really just hate what I gave up more. The Bucks get even better, getting Purvis AND points for a G/B player I sent them in the offseason. Sad face... I like it for both sides though. Bucks get a guy though that may not be a core guy to build around, and is several years from maybe reaching his potential. He got a good prospect, but I thought he could have gotten more for Purvis. I thought all along this is what Doug was going to do with Wilkins TBH too. Hopefully for LogPMess it works out.

The Knicks saw the Pistons deal and said, you know what let me do that but pay more for a guy. However, it does make sense because they got a guy in his prime and at a position of need (wing). I think the Knicks are going to hope for some defensive presence from Lamp, but I think they still paid too much for the guy. Giving up both a pick and your lone trade chip (stipanovich) and points seems a little excessive. Thankfully, I am not the only person that felt in a giving mood this time of year.

Sonics gonna Sonics this year. After the resim for sim 2, where they realized they were going nowhere quick they decided to sell it all off! So they send Collins out for points, a pick, and some scrubs. The Sonics are cleaning house and in full tank mode. Knicks also get a good bench contributor to help deepen their roster some, which was needed. Ten points seems a little steep, but really I can not fault them at this point. Look, I understand people hate this trade or think it is stupid. I don't. I think it shows that while there was mudslinging being thrown about throwing people out and not being active, that they in fact could resolve their issues and even make trades. So, now the next time the Bucks or Kings complain about not being able to get JLM to make a deal or how he never does a deal we can all point back to this trade and say "See! We're all friends here and you made a trade." Honestly it was just us making light of the whole thing and having a laugh about it. It was all meant to be done in good fun and I hope everyone got a chuckle out of it.

OBJECTIVE: Over 2000 words, 6 points
SUBJECTIVE: This is a great idea for a series of posts, and as I did last season, I will award 3 points now as it is doing a good job of touching the entire league. Since the trade deadline hasn't happened yet, I am witholding the last point pending write-ups of all trades that happen through the deadline; and will award that point once all trades are covered.

+100 FRIENDSHIP POINTS FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THIS DEAL
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read this. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
