We gave up everything for him. We went from Delmar to Alex Caruso / Gerry Folse then flipped Folse for Saddiq Bey then Saddiq Bey and Richie Cuevas for Danny Campbell and finally Caruso for Darius Garland.

And IamQuailman could not be more proud of us.

To. This. Day.

I remember thinking that, gee whiz, we had a talented group with Heard DC and Caruso...but only grandpa Blakemore at the offensive wheel? It seemed like the other guys were useless with grandpa Blake running offense, barely averaging 6 assists a game. So…

We staked everything on having an elite PG. Too much. And while he will be one of the best in the league, with the training camps that Garland has had, he’ll never be a Lu Dort. Or even a He Hor. Surely better than a y/y drafted Daniel Gamez, okay, but Darius doesn’t know how to steal a ball and never will.

We gave this fool 100+ pts and he’ll still never be as good as Caruso! But this is the reality in which we find ourselves, and we’re probably not done pumping points into him just yet - our fate be damned.

Choices were made and here we are with a core of RFAs who had middling to absolute dog poop training camps. ...but holy cow we also scored Myke Henry in UFA.

Sorry Myke, but you’re carrying this squad as the only offensive option besides Garland. DJ Khaled has something to say now, Myke:


I played myself, too, though, Myke, but I can’t be the only SLOE GM with massive regrets. And I’m sure I’m only one slimy offer away from making a horrible trade again, but who cares? Some day we will be champs and we will pee on competition like they were Donald Trump in a sexy situation.

Fabian “The Grub” Hub had a fantastic TC and we’re very excited for his future in PBSL. Jordan Poole is continuing to grow and some day the rest of the league will know that, like the real Jordan Poole, they slept on a star. (Real ones already know about SLOE JP though.)

And I still have no clue what I’m going to do this season. I’ve already cried like a hungry baby with a dirty diaper, hypothetically. I’ve definitely chortled in disbelief. But at the end of the day, Darius Garland had yet another 40+ but not quite 50pt TC and may be the steady little engine that could.

Even prior to that draft I felt he was a solid PG prospect with good upside if given some TLC, but you already have Garland in place and spent draft capital on another rookie PG this off-season. Do you feel Poole's future is in a Laker uniform? Or will his best days be in another color scheme?

We've seen referrers give their referrals a nice, steady dose of slime in recent seasons with the Nuggets fleecing the Blazers and the Thunder doing the unconscionable against poor, pathetic jlmarines and the Cleveland Failures. Yet, you have taken the high road with your mentees. What gives dude?

As you approach your 20th season in sim league, what do you think has been your biggest success and most disappointing failure so far in your GM career?

The Wiggins Division is one of perennially good teams, and the Suns look to really come up this season too. I have no difficulty believing there will be 4 teams better than us this regular season in Wiggins. We were third last year, 4th in the conference, and only 6 games separated us from third and 2nd to last place. Murderers row up in here man.

I could go in depth here, but I really only need one word: Beneath. Maybe below. Take your pick.

All 3 of those dudes have had at least one league leading TC helping to propel them to their current heights. Until Garland shows up like that in the offseason, not even another steroidal boost of pts will get him to their level.

Truthfully, time will tell. Until his value is recognizable at a glance, he will stay in LA. We think one more comparably decent TC will put him higher on other GMs' radars, in which case it might make sense to ship him out.

As is, we see him starting to peak as Garland plateaus, and those two creating offense from the backcourt could create Splash-brother-like problems for other teams in the league, and we think that is pretty cool.

We're not ready to rush to any conclusions on Poole's future, and that is to our benefit for now.

Well, Mike Lowry is my one and only referral thus far. I like him and he's having a rough enough start in South Beach as is. I don't need to add to that drama. I don't need to sell him a wooden nickel to snatch Kevon Looney from his grasp, and hopefully no other slimy GMs do this either, because Looney is his first true future star until other talent falls into his lap. In the meantime I hope he stops giving the grandpas of PBSL 4 yr deals.

20 seasons went by fast. My greatest success was raising Delmar Lopez from a young y/p Canaday into one of the league's greatest players of all time. Sure, anyone could have been the one to sign him, but LA did sign him and stuck by him until we were sure we couldn't hand him a ring. We did the most sensible thing for him and us: getting him over to Chicago to grab some gold before drifting into his elder years as the highest paid player in league history while still showing some of the leagues younger talents who's the boss. And our biggest failure is in that success: we could not get one of the league's all time greatest players a ring.

Bruh, great questions.

I have some nice young talent not necessarily on Garland's timeline, yes, but I think their trade value needs to appreciate some more. Also, aside from Garland and a plateauing Henry, I don't have a 2nd core piece to push for a third yet.

I've talked plenty of smack on Garland but he is going to be great. He already proved me wrong this offseason by averaging a steal a game, so bs aside, we're happy with Garland's progress.

My experience with Delmar... came to an end because I didn't have enough talent surrounding him and lacked moveable assets to get one more talented piece to support him. Out of assets and out of points, Delmar had to leave LA ahead of schedule. So, from Delmar's time in LA I learned that, what I have now with Garland and Henry this year? It's not enough to go all in. It makes more sense to find a new home for Henry for an additional piece to Garland, honestly.

I did not have the patience to raise Caruso all the way, and that was a big mistake in retrospect. I thought I had seen the writing on the wall a la Delmar when I had Caruso and DC and Olney together collectively underperforming my expectations so I opted to move the most moveable piece for a rebuild. While I wish I got a better return on Caruso in hindsight, what's done is done, and I've chosen to exercise a little patience, stay under the cap another year, and see where some things can or can't be moved.

I need to call tradebacks on Caruso first so that, not just me, but anybody has a shot at beating your Pistons. Let's get that right.

Seriously though, shortly after I joined, gman wrote an odds article on what new GMs chances are in winning a 'ship in their first 10 seasons. I did not get good odds and saw that as a challenge, especially since he gave mexmamba better odds. SO I gave myself 10 seasons. I was in contention a couple of times, the first arguably by accident due to better teams' players getting injured, but then built a better team for a run and never made it to the finals in my next 10 seasons.

So here we are. I'm a long way from contending. I have 1 star player and a couple strong bench caliber players supporting him. I'm not in great shape to get a title with Garland, but who knows? Maybe I'll get lucky again and shock the league with a run at the title on Garland's timeline, surrounding him with a star big man and maybe a younger version of Myke Henry.
