League Expansion

Post by garbageman »

Hey All,

I want to open up a quick discussion about league expansion. While we have filled the openings for the Blazers and the Cavs, I know a few other folks have mentioned they have people lined up.

I'd love to get more GMs in here to drive participation, but doing so would require the league to expand. We have a blueprint for an expansion draft from when Chad took over the Bobcats that seemed to work pretty well, but if anyone (especially someone that was here during that process) has any alternate ideas or problems with the method we used (teams must expose a number of players based on how many contracts they have on their team/you can pay the expansion team points to NOT take your player/expansion draft occurs), let's hear them.

I also want to independently research what options we have for a league with an odd number of teams. Uneven conferences are the default (we've done it before with 29 teams), but I'm wondering if a 3 division league with 9 teams in each division would work, because that would interest me. If it does work, I'll let y'all know.

Finally, and most importantly...how would we decide who gets to take over an expansion team?
* I'd have great hesitation letting a brand new person take over an expansion team since it's something that I think requires experience and a proven track record of participation.
* If multiple people want the expansion team (and we have people to take over their teams), how do we decide who gets it? Highest points bidder? Only folks who find a replacement GM for their team?

Without time to think more comprehensively about the details, I totally agree we shouldn't give a new GM an expansion team. Why don't we just say if multiple people want one, it's up to the commissioner's discretion?
6 Rings. That's it. That's the tweet.

I'd still like to develop some criteria.

Maybe:

1. GM can't be tax delinquent.
2. GM needs good depth chart attendance for the last 5 seasons.
3. Any other criteria...

Then the incoming GM can pick between teams owned by old GMs who would want to take on an expansion team.

I'm bumping this. I'd like to get some more feedback since Ryan has a dude who might be interested, AB/K100 have a dude that might be interested, and having 28 teams in the league would be, I'd say, an improvement over having 26 teams.

Anyway, I've given some more thought to it, and here's some further idea.

Which GMs would be eligible to take on an expansion team?

My original criteria included that the GM has to:
1. Not be tax delinquent.
2. Have a long standing reputation of being reliable.
3. Be willing to cede their current team.

What if multiple current and eligible GMs want to take on an expansion team?

If multiple GMs want to run an expansion team, and there's one new GM, the current GMs will list their team as eligible for new GMs to take over. In addition, the current GM will be able to set a price. Since all incoming GMs start out with 25 points, the current GM can list their team with an amount.

Either the new GM would have to pay them up to 25 points to take over their team, or they could offer an amount of extra points for their new GM. So basically, if someone puts together a really good, championship-quality team, but wants an expansion team, they can list their team as available for 25 points. Conversely, if you screw up your build, you can put your team up there as available and offer additional points for a new GM.

The new GM would then decide which team they want to overtake, and that team's previous GM would be able to take on an expansion team.

Would there be an expansion draft?

For the sake of simplicity, and not having to think things through when there's not much feedback on this, I'd just run it like the Bobcats/Chad expansion draft were run, but I'd also be down for suggestions.

Any case...I would like more feedback, and would you list your team so you could take on an expansion team?

The other option is to let new GMs take on expansion teams, but I imagine we'd want those rules to be a bit different.

I dont think any points need to be involved in the decision-making process, personally, though I guess I can see why some would. I feel like, if everyone involved is choosing to be involved, just let the incoming GM choose from the list of available squads. At most I say let current GMs offer points. Would feel strange to me to ask new GMs to put point offers for teams when they still don't know point values/created their own value system. If a GM who has built a strong team decides to offer that team up, well, it was their choice to do so.

Besides that, I dont have a ton to add. Just along for the ride. I probably would put the Clips as available though just to possibly give myself a new jolt of energy.

I would like to see if the two new GMs stick and make sure we don't have any other current GM that isn't thinking of leaving. I always hope for the best and want to see the league be full for more than a season before we go expanding and potentially have more stewarded teams. Feels like a jolt when I just voted in the contraction poll and now discussing adding.

If I gave up the Magic, would I take my current points with me to the expansion team?

Co-sign on the similar expansion draft we did for the Bobcats.

If you like your points bank, you can keep it!
