PLEASE READ: Color Rating Fluctuations

Post by IamQuailman »

Something caught my eye earlier when I was updating players for their Mini-Rookie Training... For some players, their colors ratings changed despite the actual number (current and potential) staying the same. I noticed this on 3 players at first: Keyon Dooling (y/y to o/y), Trajan Langdon (y/g to o/y), and Raja Bell (y/g to y/b). Then another GM mentioned that Jason Terry had dropped from g/b to y/b, despite no change in ratings at all. (see below)

Before (end of 00-01 season, via archive):

After (current index):

Just doing a quick scroll through, I noticed Ruben Patterson also had the same thing happen (g/g to y/g without change to any current ratings).

This is completely new to me and everyone else (Wig included) who have been around running the game. I'm going to reach out to the developers about this as well with screenshots (of which I will take shortly). Again, their current and potential # rankings did NOT change, but the colors did. After looking into it, we have a theory that maybe the large influx of talent from this draft may have had some impact on how the ratings are color categorized... I.E. we had 12 new blue potential players and another 10 green potential guys coming in, with very little retiring. This would lead us to believe that the thresholds for the color ratings are FLUID in that it depends on how much talent currently exists in the league.

Again, please do not lose your cool or flip out, because I'm at a loss just like the rest of you may be. So hopefully we get some positive information from the developers regarding this issue and can at least get some clarification.

Sorry for the inconvenience and confusion, guys. :(

Personally (and i know others do/may feel the same), I don't mind doing away with colors. It would be possible. Youd actually have to look at stats and ratings. Colors kinda make it easy to say "OH LOOK Y/G! YUCK" when that player may be 1 quickness rating point away from G/G. It's kinda silly.

I'm looking at teams' pages, and wow. The auto-shuffling of player color rankings makes sense in theory, but boy, it's a bit frightening to see it in action.

It may be weeding out those guys who are undersized/too slow/lack certain skills at their position, and also culling players as more guys with skills similar or superior to theirs come in. The only way a good player would be rated better is if an influx of lesser talent came in, and that's not what's happening.

I think there needs to be a serious conversation about this. These player's values are being destroyed by this. It's costing some teams(the teams that are being hit the hardest) loads of value. No one obviously understand it or knows why it's happening. Which is fine, but now what? Since the actual numbers aren't being affected and it's happening every damn index update now, I think we should seriously consider eliminating the colors all together. This would make this problem irrelevant. And no one loses value. But this needs discussion. It's happening too often at this point.

This is affecting trade vlue even though the player ratings don't change. Time for colors to go away.
