Boston Celtics 2022 Media Day

Post by Conroy »

GM Roy: Another season in the books, another rebuilding year complete. We had lofty expectations when the season started and were making good progress. We weren't thrilled with how the roster turned out, maybe it was De La Rosa's long improvement, maybe we expected too much out of Dario, maybe we just weren't ready. But we did something a little unconventional and played the long game in attempts to bring in more talent during the offseason. This was also sort of our downfall, we stopped tinkering with lineup and gameplan, and became content just to finish out the year, make the playoffs and get some post season reps in.

I take the blame I was perfectly OK to let the season play out this way and should have kept my foot on the gas, and the players just followed my lead. But we shouldn't let the disappointing end to the season overshadow what we accomplished. We improved our win total by 7 wins, Tyler Ulis was All-League 2nd team and KAT started to make the leap just missing out on averaging a double double, and we made it to the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row.

The offseason was somewhat eventful, we brought back Tyler Ulis and Julio De La Rosa on max level RFA contracts, we traded for Phil Milburn, and we have about as strong a 7 man rotation as there is in the league we feel like. Training Camp went well Julio is starting to live up to the hype that's been following him for 4 years, and we are ready to finally make some real noise in the Eastern Conference and league as a whole.

I'll Open it up to questions.

With a hefty tax bill looming, and Phil Milburn and Jaylen Brown due to be UFAs and RFAs, respectively, after this season, is there any pressure to win it all this year?

How long are you giving De La Rosa to grow into his potentials before considering the word "bust"?

So you traded for Milburn and signed some hefty contracts in the off-season which I know was all part of the plan. I want to focus on Julio though. 4 years into the league he hasn't averaged more than 10 ppg. He started in the pre-season yet is shooting a nasty 37% from the field. Yet you handed him a max deal. While I agree that you had to give that contract to him, do you think the rawness of the players is a problem? Do you think that this could ultimately be harmful to the league?

This seems like the longest rebuild in the history of rebuilds. So I think it would be shortsighted to put 4-5 years worth of rebuilding into a single season. So I won’t see there’s pressure to win it all. But it’s definitely time to stop settling for 8 seeds and first round exits. If we don’t perform with this roster it’s on us.

I complained about the rawness of these college players from year 1. If it wasn’t for Julio I do believe I would be getting these same questions about KAT. He has all the tools but too short and slow. Everyone has these same players but I might have had the misfortune of poor timing with the rookie training being eliminated and the baseline for height being manipulated some (albeit i won’t begin to pretend I even know what was changed or if it had made an impact). With all that being said rawness be damned I believe in these players Ulis was All NBA 2nd team as a pg/sg with no handles or passing ability. These guys are ready and even if it takes 2 more years for Julio I should get 5-6 amazing seasons out of him before he starts to decline
