A look at the top 10 RFAs

Post by ballsohard »

In no particular order I’ll review these RFAs, whether their rights should be accepted, what i think the current teams should do with them and if you’re an external team, what you should be looking to do.

Nikola Jokic
Team: New York Knicks
Accept rights? Yes

Summary: Jokic is a really talented player but im not sure, if at this point he will live up to his #1 overall selection due to TCs. Nonetheless, hes a vital piece to the Knicks goin forward.

Retaining Team Strategy:Offer a near max team friendly deal and hope he signs for a discount, but if an external team maxes, you match. I dont think Jokic is the guy you super max though.

External Team Strategy:If you’ve got money the worst thing that can happen is you make another team pay for their player. Maybe you make a solid offer and a bunch of picks gets him if you’re missing that one guy.

S&T Chance:5%

Andrew Wiggins
Team: Minnesota Timberwolves
Accept rights? Yes

Summary: Wiggins was the losers prize of this draft during the draft and has turned into the only guy with the talent to be a bonafide star in this league. The Wolves GM has been down on Wiggins since missing out on Jokic, but i think he’s finally seen the light.

Retaining Team Strategy: 5 Year max this guy and give him a chance to become the franchises all time greatest player. Match anything.

External Team Strategy: I mean you’re not getting Wiggins.

S&T Chance:1% - If Ad is involved

Joel Embiid
Team:L.A. Lakers
Accept rights? Yes

Summary:This is where things get interesting. Embiid hit twice by TC now and not insured has gone from a solid big to pair with Giannis to a irl Greg Oden sized disappointment.

Retaining Team Strategy: Is 5 m per year too much? Maybe it’s about right here. The Lakers wont have any bigs going into the offseason so maybe they try and strike a deal here. You definitely dont match anything here though.

External Team Strategy: I’m going to guess anything north of 9 m per year gets him. And if you do get him, im not sure i’d be sending anything back of value. Embiid is an ancillary piece, not core.

S&T Chance: 90%

Jabari Parker
Team: OKC Thunder
Accept rights? Yes

Summary: 20/6 isnt a bad line, but to call Parker elite would be a massive stretch. Guys like Parker are exactly why it’s so hard to navigate the RFA waters. He’s really good, not great and will probably be getting a max.

Retaining Team Strategy: I think you offer a deal youre very comfortable with, but ultimately i think you see what the winning bid is and accept it begrudgingly.

External Team Strategy: Throw a max out there. You’re not getting a young UFA like this for cheaper. To add to this, i think he’s somewhat gettable if you’re willing to ante up.

S&T Chance: 30%

Gary Harris
Team: New York Knicks
Accept rights? Yes

Summary:Harris was moved for Chet Dooley to add some scoring punch to the Knicks squad, and that he did. the Knicks have been a top tier team since adding him.

Retaining Team Strategy:I think this is a guy who very much fits in that Tobias strategy where you hope for the best but match the worst begrudgingly.

External Team Strategy:Again, I’d go the Tobias route but i think hes less obtainable. The Knicks have 2 strategies they can take:
1. Retain all of their talent and make another run

2. Reset around Jokic and Harris

Neither one spells Harris leaving unless youre sending a much better player.

S&T Chance: 5%

Dario Saric
Team Orlando Magic
Accept rights? Yes

Summary: Saric has become quite the complimentary player in his time in Orlando. He’s a solid 3rd or 4th best player on a team. He can shoot, rebound, and pass, but is probably miscast as a 3 in Orlando.

Retaining Team Strategy:Saric has to be a part of the future no matter the deal here, but he doesnt have to be a shot in the foot. I’d probably offer a 4 year 15-18 m deal and see if that nets him back to me. If there’s a max, i have to take it because the Magic went all in and sold all their young assets.

External Team Strategy: MAX city. It’s hard to find guys who do 3 things well in this league and get them for a discount in terms of assets.

S&T Chance:25%

Getting to this a little later!

TJ Warren
Team: Atlanta Hawks
Accept rights? Yes

Summary:Warren is a luxury, not a core piece to the Hawks, but i wouldnt be surprised if the typically tight fisted Hawks hold on to him unless for a haul.

Retaining Team Strategy:This is another, throw out a great team friendly deal, and see what comes your way.

External Team Strategy:If you’re looking for a 1 way player that has solid athleticism and can play 2 positions (maybe 3) then Warren’s your guy. I think 15 million leans towards the Hawks retaining him and 20 is where you can hardball wig and laugh if he accepts. Is the 5 million difference a difference maker to your teams cap? If not bid away.

Zach Lavine
Team: Chicago Bulls
Accept rights? Yes

Summary: Lavine is a big 1 or a good sized 2 that we’ve yet to see his best. The Bulls shopped him pretty openly during their rebuild so I’m not sure what’s going to happen to him.

Retaining Team Strategy:The Bulls are a rebuilding team with not much on the books. I think they are in a position of power here and need to retain him unless someone blows them away. Lavine, Dipo, NoSTAo (Milburn), their pick and Desantis is a hell of a core to start with.

External Team Strategy:If i had a young guy i wasn’t in love with with that Blue potential, I’d maybe max and offer him up to see if i can get Lavine. Lavine’s not going to be the guy who wins you a ring, but he can be your third guy.

Sean Kilpatrick
Team: Milwaukee Bucks
Accept rights? Yes

Summary:Kilpatrick is probably one of the more obtainable guys out there for a few reasons. 1. quail is wheeler and dealer 2. Kil was on the block pretty heavily at the deadline 3. He’s not really worth a big deal. Make no mistake, he’s a great 6th man, probably below average starter.

Retaining Team Strategy:If Quail can get him at 8-12 a year, i think he keeps him in Milwaukee.

External Team Strategy:Anything above that 12m mark, send over 5-10 points as a cost of doing business and congrats on your soon to be nomination for 6th man of the year.

Extra
Marcus Smart
Team: Orlando Magic
Accept rights? Yes

Summary: Marcus Smart has the potential to be an elite 2 guard defender. Marcus Smart also has the potential to be a complete liability as an offensive guard. The thing about him is, if you have an elite 1 that scores and passes, Smart can start by him and it’s a great play. If you’re a team with no passers and scorers at the 2-5 it’s a bad play.

Retaining Team Strategy:Marcus is a guy who’s great for a team contending, which we think the Magic are doing. So chances are they value him more than the external team does, which decreases your leverage. I think they retain him at anywhere under 15 m.

External Team Strategy:If an elite guard defender is what you need to get a ring throw out 17m and don’t offer anything in return because this is a bad asset for tradability , but could help you win it all.

One of the most disorienting smoke screens will be for the Grizz.

Turns out it was a steam screen and no one saw it as it evaporated into the air.
