Sim League Records That Will Never Be Broken

Post by Bowtothebill23 »

"Records are made to be broken." So the old saying goes. But, in our sim league of over 25 seasons now, we've seen some once in a lifetime players come through whose talents may never be matched. With that means that there are some records that are so far above everybody else that we probably never will see some of them broken again. Here are some of those records:

Individual Player Records in a Single Game:

Kevin Durant: Points: 77
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/2012/boxes/box50-4.htm
By 2012, Kevin Durant had fully arrived as one of the top players not just in the league, but in league history. As a purple/purple monster at only 24 years of age, Durant had a ridiculous scoring average of 37.6. He over doubled that in this game. Durant shot 29-34 from the field, 2-4 from 3, and 17-20 from the line. Poor Mike Miller was absolutely abused by Durant. Durant ended the game with a TS% of 90%. 90%!!! At 77 points, Durant has 6 more points than the second most points in a game. The difference between Durant's 77 and Love's and Davis' 71 is the same as the difference between 2nd most all time and 10th most all time. We may eventually see this record broken, but after 25 seasons, no one is within 5 points Durant.

John Stockton: Assists: 26
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1990/boxes/box165-5.htm
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1990/boxes/box171-3.htm
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1990/boxes/box217-1.htm
In 25 seasons, only 3 times has a player ever recorded 25 or more assists in a single game. All 3 were completed by John Stockton in our inaugural season. Because of the way we treat ratings, this record may never be broken. John Stockton's passing rating the first 2 seasons was well over 100, while we've learned now to cap all ratings at 100. Sure, some players have approached that record. But only 2 players not selected in the creation draft even appear on the top 15 assists in a game list (Deron with 24 and Rubio with 23 twice). Will we ever see someone break John's record? Maybe not.

Alonzo Mourning: Blocks: 16
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1999/boxes/box145-1.htm
Only 8 times in 25 seasons has a player blocked 12+ shots. Only once has a player blocked more than 14 shots: Mourning blocked a ridiculous 16 shots in a game. DeAndre Jordan and Steven Hunter have each blocked 14 once, but 16 stands alone at the top on a maybe insurmountable mountain. Think about this: this season the Hawks and Warriors are tied for first in block % (% of field goals that result in a block) at 8.1%. Alonzo Mourning blocked 18.6% of the Kings' field goal attempts that game.

Kevin Durant: Free Throws Made: 31
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/boxes/box150-1.htm
This happened just a few sims ago during this season. Shawn Kemp was always the king of drawing fouls, and he hit his free throws at an excellent rate for a big man. For that reason, I assumed he'd hold every record for free throws. Kemp once made 29 free throws in a game which is 3 more than the next closest: Shawn Kemp and Karl Malone. If Durant can beat that record and add an extra free throw just to cement himself as the record holder, this may never be broken. Durant went 31-34 from the line. Harrison Barnes had 5 fouls and the Kings had 34 fouls as a whole.

Individual Player Records in a Single Season:

Dennis Rodman: Offensive Rebounds: 5.09
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1990/players/player330.htm
In our inaugural season, Rodman came in with each rebounding rating well over 100. In particular, his offensive rebounding stood out as he averaged 5.09 offensive rebounds a game. Let's put that into perspective. The closest to that is Dennis Rodman 2 seasons later at 4.66. Rodman holds the top 4 seasons overall with regards to offensive rebounds. The closest non-Rodman player to the record was Alonzo Mourning who averaged 4.07 offensive rebounds per game. Rodman averaged 1.02 more offensive rebounds than the next closest player to him. Mourning averaged 0.59 more offensive rebounds than the 50th ranked season. This record will never come close to being broken.

Dennis Rodman: Rebounds: 13.38
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1990/players/player330.htm
In the same vein, no one can come particularly close to Rodman with regards to regular rebounds either. When you average over 1 offensive rebound per game more than the next closest player, you have the inside track to the most rebounds in general. Shaq is second at 12.84 offensive rebounds per game. Let's put it this way: Shaq was 7'1 and had 100 ratings in ORB, DRB, STR, and JMP. If Shaq can't even come within half a rebound of Rodman, I doubt anyone ever will. This is another record Rodman will likely hold forever.

John Stockton: Assists: 14.57
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1991/players/player364.htm
Here's another record that I feel extremely confident will stand forever. Stockton averaged 14.57 assists per game. The closest non-Stockton player to that was Muggsy with 13.4. The closest non-creation draft player is John Wall with 12.07. Think about that. The closest a player who plays under the same rules with regards to 100+ ratings that we hold today was 2.5 assists shy of Stockton. Stockton had an assist percentage that season of 41.9%. Rubio is leading the league in assists this year with 11.8 assists.

Allen Iverson: Turnovers: 4.71
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1996/players/player578.htm
What happens when you give a rookie on a crap team with 39 handles the point guard spot as one of the only offensive threats on a team? You get a season that obliterates the second closest season with regards to turnovers per game. Only 3 players have ever averaged over 4 turnovers a game: Iverson, Tracy McGrady with 4.05, and LeBron James this season with 4.3. Even those 3 couldn't touch Iverson. Iverson had a turnover percentage of 16.0% which is simply incredible. Let's see if any future rookie point guard is handed the keys to a terrible team, and maybe we'll see someone approach this record. Until then, we can chalk this one up as pretty much unbreakable.

John Stockton: Double-Doubles: 73
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1991/players/player364.htm
Let's get back to Stockton's ridiculous 1991 season, shall we? Stockton played all 82 games and put up double digit assists in 77 of them. He put up double digit points in 78 of them. He never scored fewer than 7 points and never had fewer than 8 assists in a game. I doubt we'll ever see someone come close to approaching 14.5 assists or rebounds per game which likely means we'll never see someone approach this record. Stockton owns the #2 spot with 68 in a season. Shaq is next closest at 67. After that, it's Love with 63. Let's just call this one forever.

Team Records in a Single Game

Offensive Rebounds: Washington Wizards: 36
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/2002/boxes/box73-1.htm
The Wizards had a great rebounding team in general: when Lamar Odom is your SF, Rashard Lewis is your SG, you know you'll be great on the glass. But on this game against the Nuggets, the Wizards rebound 66.7% of their misses. They had 36 offensive rebounds compared to 18 defensive rebounds by the Nuggets. Five Wizards reached double digit rebounds, 6 Wizards had 3 or more offensive rebounds, and Vitaly Potapenko had 10 offensive rebounds off the bench. The next closest to this record is 33 ORBs in a game. The difference between 1 and 2 is the same as the difference between 2 and 7.

Free Throw Attempts: Minnesota Timberwolves: 78
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/2005/boxes/box68-8.htm4
The Timberwolves attempted 78 free throws against the Warriors in 2005. The next closest? 71 free throw attempts in a game. The difference between 1 and 2 is the same as the difference between 2 and 20. The Wolves stand alone at the top of this list, and will likely never be matched. The Wolves drew 43 fouls as 12 Warriors played, and 11 had 3 fouls or more at the end of the game. 4 Wolves drew 10 or more free throws. Coincidentally, the Wolves hold the record for the most free throws made in a game in this game with 59. That record has come extremely close to being broken however as the Wolves could've put this record on ice with an elite free throw shooting day, but shot instead a solid 75.6% from the line. Had the Wolves had a great day and shot 80%, the Wolves could've made 62-63 free throws and that record would be unbreakable as well.

Team Records in a Single Season

Longest Win Streak: Boston Celtics: 33
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1995/rosters/roster6.htm
Ho-ly-Crap. The Celtics won 33 games in a row in 1996, more than 9 teams won all season in that year. For over 2 months, the Celtics didn't lose a game: from 1/10-3/14. They went from an already great 24-8 record to an absurd 57-8 record. Why will this record never be broken? Well first off, this was towards the beginning of the league, and there was almost no parity in the league. There were 3-4 teams that had a shot at a title, and no one else stood a chance. The Celtics were also the first real super-team. The Celtics were really the first team to "rebuild" as they went all in for the 1993 draft. Then, when teams decided to rebuild, the Celtics had so many more picks and assets than anyone else that they turned the rebuild into a super team that made 5 Finals. They also hit on a pick protection to select Alonzo Mourning. Lastly, there hasn't been any other team to even hit 30 wins in a row. 29 is the closest, and 24 is the closest after that. This Celtics team will live on forever as the longest winning streak ever.

Most Wins: Atlanta Hawks: 72
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/2001/rosters/roster5.htm
This record is unbreakable in my eyes simply because of the circumstances surrounding the team and the league at this time. First of all, to put this team together took some incredible lottery luck, TC luck, strategic trading, some good-old-fashioned trapes, and one of the greatest players in Sim League History. In addition to this, because the league saw how unbeatable this Hawks team was AND the fact that LeBron James was entering the league in 2 seasons, most teams viewed this as good a time as any to rebuild and make much of the league absolute garbage. Regardless, this Hawks team was historically great. The closest team to this one was the Hawks team the year prior which won 71. The closest to that was the Warriors in 1996 which featured the GOAT in his prime, Cedric Ceballos and Glen Rice each in their primes. No team will likely ever match those Hawks teams in talent, and the league features more parity now than ever before. We simply may never see a 73 win team. And to top it off, the 2001 Hawks went 16-2 in the playoffs, sweeping the Mavs in the Finals.

Points Allowed: Los Angeles Lakers: 84.2
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/2001/rosters/roster17.htm
A lot of the same stuff that went for the Hawks in 2001 goes for the Lakers. There were a lot of total garbage teams and very few elite teams in Sim League in 2001. Also, the game's changed. The Lakers averaged 92.6 possessions per game in 2001. The slowest team in the NBA today averaged 94.5 possessions per game. And the best defense in the league allowed 99.3 points per 100 possessions this season. The Lakers allowed 90.8. We are seeing a shift to faster basketball today, faster than we've ever seen in sim league. The slow it down pace doesn't exist nowadays. Neither does elite stifling defense. There're still great defenses, but none the level of that Lakers team which featured prime Garnett, Kirilenko, and Jason Kidd along with up and coming Larry Hughes.

Offensive Rebounds: New Jersey Nets: 15.63
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1990/rosters/roster7.htm
Raise your hand if you saw this one coming. It still doesn't totally make sense just looking at their team page and ratings. The Nets played at a fast pace, but still only ranked 11th in the league. How'd they do it? Well first of all, they missed a ton of shots. They finished 25th in FG% and 28th in FT%. Next, the team had a crash the boards mentality. 8 players averaged at least one offensive rebound a game. 4 players who weren't bigs were included in that group. As insane as it sounds, the Nets just got it done. No one is within .75 offensive rebounds per game all time with them. Today, the Suns lead the way with 14.5 ORBs per game. Somehow, the Nets have this unbreakable record.

Steals: Golden State Warriors: 10.79
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1997/rosters/roster13.htm
The Warriors won 69 games in 1997, and did so on the heels of their elite defense, particularly on the perimeter. Each Warrior starter in the backcourt boasted a steal rating of 100. Of the 9 players who got consistent minutes for the Warriors, 8 had at least 1 steal per game. The other had 0.8. Even Shawn Kemp averaged 1.3 steals per game. 10.7% of their opponents' possessions ended in a steal for the Warriors. It would be very hard to replicate the personnel the Warriors had defensively, and it would be hard to match the system the Warriors ran. This shows in history as no team is within .5 steals per game of that Warriors team, and only 4 teams have ever even averaged 10 steals a game. As we see fewer great point guards coming out and bigger, more offensive focused players playing the point (where most steals are created), this record may never be broken. Only one team is even averaging 9 steals a game right now.

Blocks: Milwaukee Bucks: 9.26
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/2000/rosters/roster20.htm
That Bucks team led by Shaq and Bo Outlaw had 2 players averaging over 3 blocks a game. I believe they're the only team to ever do that. The Bucks blocked 10.5% of their opponents' field goals. The most blocks in the league right now are the Hawks with 7.1. Only 6 teams have ever averaged 8 blocks a game, and no team has ever averaged 8.5 blocks per game besides the Bucks. The Bucks have .78 more blocks per game than the next closest team. That record seems pretty unbreakable right now.

Free Throws Made: Golden State Warriors: 32.27
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1995/rosters/roster13.htm
The 1995 team that won the title featured 2 of the players that shot the most free throws ever: Shawn Kemp and Cedric Ceballos. The Warriors drew 30.6 fouls per game (by far the most ever), and had the 5th highest FT% in the league. Kemp went 8.7 for 11.9 from the line, Ceballos went 5.3 for 6.9 from the line, Rice 4.9 for 5.9, Cassell 4.7 for 5.6, and Smits went 3.1 for 4.4. No one has ever or will ever com close to matching that team for free throws as they averaged 32.27 free throws made per game. #2 was the Milwaukee Fryes with 27.85. That's a 4.42 difference between 1 and 2. The difference between 2 and 50 is 3.81. For reference, the most free throws made per game is 20.4.

Free Throw Attempts: Golden State Warriors: 42.21
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1995/rosters/roster13.htm
This is the same situation as the one above. The Warriors attempted 42.21 free throws per game, 5.05 more free throws attempted than the #2 team. The difference between 2 and 50 is 5.27. I don't think we'll ever see a team approach either free throw record. For reference, the most free throw attempts this season is 28.9.

Those are the unbreakable records in my opinion. Do you disagree with any?

I disagree with all of them other than those set in the first two three years of the league. If the new rookie classes are all going to be like the first one we are going to see some unprecedented combinations of skill and athleticism that could lead to some wacky box scores.
