Who Owns Whom?

Post by kucoach7 »

Nathan Sliver with sevenfortyseven here once again. In my second attempt to exploit my new game level data set, today I will answer the question who owns whom? As in, which match-ups have been the most lopsided over the years in the PBSL. The answer is maybe not all that surprising. On one side of the table you will the the league's perennial contenders. In the other column you will see the franchises that have largely been revolving doors for green GMs to come in, get blind-sided, run the team into the ground once again and leave.

The most interesting matchup on the list here is the first. The Mavs owning a team isn't that surprising but the Heat are about .500 since the league's beginning and have had large stretches of success in the Payton and LeBron years. It isn't clear why they've performed so poorly against the Mavs. Other than that the list is pretty much as expected, a bunch of highly successful Western Conference franchises beating up on the scum of the Eastern Conference pond. We only have one within division rivalry on the list, Dubs-Sonics, which surprises absolutely no one. The biggest surprise for me was that the Blazers didn't make the list... but wait, there's more!

Two teams pop up on this list that I expected to see in the first list, the Blazers in the right hand column and the Hawks in the left hand column. The most successful and consistent team apparently may not always beat any team but there are certain team's against whom they like to run up the score. The Suns, Bulls, and Cavs all make the list twice, which surprises no one given their histories. The most interesting team here is probably the Rockets, who just can't seem to keep things close when they play the Hawks.

Curious about how you've done against another team? Check out the full spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing. Are you interested in hearing how certain GMs have done against each other (e.g. Balls and Quail, Tray and Quail, the LogPMess and GMessi)? Post in the comments if you're interested and who you want to hear about and I'll do a second edition focused on rivalries.

This is rad as hell. I'd love to see this over different, non-all time periods, but probably not a big enough data set to make the window small enough to be strategically relevant for teams in the short term.
