New Orleans Hornets Media Presser 2014

Media Day
"Man, last season was difficult. Maybe the toughest of my career. I never lost the light though. Even with a broken arm, that just drove me to wanna get back faster.

I never let the money define me. I just wanted to get back on that court and play. Take my anger out and score. I poured my heart and soul onto these bars that I collaborated with Nawlins' own, Lil Wayne."

"New Orleans is this place man that we could build and rise together. I love it here and I wanna see all the fans celebrate with passion. I know we've got some of the best fans in the world. This is bigger than us."

Wiped the slate clean with Dame and Mozzy. The draft lotto put us in position to draft the talented young wing, Jabari Parker. Parker demonstrates an excellent ability to penetrate the defense and score in a multitude of ways. We're blessed in a way to have a player the caliber of Jabari as a cornerstone of this franchise for many years to come playing with Dame. We were also fortunate enough to strike up a draft day deal to move up with the Miami Heat for point consideration to select Marcus Smart. We are hopeful that he can be everything we hope Jabari can be on the defensive side and just get inside a dudes face and force the situation. Marcus is going to be another important cog to our machine we are developing.

With the draft in the clear, we entered FA with 40 million plus in cap space that left us in a favorable position. To court a multitude of talented players. We had a hole at the 4 and the 2 entering FA knowing Marcus Smart was a few years away from being a regular contributor in the rotation. We traded for Tobias Harris, a guy that was just looking for an opportunity. We acquired him from Minnesota for a future first from the Golden State Warriors we got in the Ryan Anderson deal and Harris is a guy that thrives off competition. More on him later. We signed Gary Neal initially to a contract and he was so valuable to the Heat, they just didn't want to let him go so they matched his fair and favorable contract. All well and good and hope he succeeds in his future endeavors.

Moving onto UFA, we were fortunate enough to convince Greg Monroe and Randy Foye who played for the Kings last year to come to the Big Easy. Greg will be a pillar of our front court for many years to come. Another guy that wanted a clear and defined role and opportunity and he worked hard to succeed. Next up was bringing in a legend and maybe the best player this franchise has ever had in signing Zach Randolph aka ZBo. ZBo's skill around the basket still is a valued weapon. Even if he took a step back physically, he's still gonna be a menace in the paint next to Mozgov or Monroe which should open up space for Lillard or Jabari or Harris to exploit the defense. We are very excited to see how this team shakes out. This will probably be the most talented team we've had trotted out in the last few years and we can't see all the pieces come together and give the loyal fans of New Orleans something to be excited about again.

What's a realistic goal for this team this season? Is winning the division realistic? Or something smaller like top 4 seed in the East come playoffs.

GWR: In preseason you started Randolph over Monroe and the veteran played well. Is this your plan going forward or do you plan on starting Monroe?

From the outside the ZBo signing seems weird. Why did the team decide to grab Zbo in the twilight of his career? Do you think the team could have benefited from one more year developing young talent? The average age of your team without Foye and Zbo is 23 years old.

After missing the playoffs the last few seasons, I think the goal for the most part is to make it. The Hawks are still the team to beat not just in the division, but the entire league. Bulls, Bucks, Pacers, Cavs as well improved so it's. Ever an easy night in the Central. That's for sure.

While I appreciate what the assistant was able to do during the preseason, I think the best possible way to utilize Monroe will be at the 5 and play with Randolph who'll be at the 4. Now that's not to completely excuse Timofeys contributions either but will mostly likely have Monroe starting. That way, we can best enhance Monroe and ZBos best attributes together in the paint.

ZBo holds a special place in all of our hearts here with the Hornets organization managing To make it to our first and only NBA finals appearance back a few years ago. While we recognize ZBo may be a step slower, he still hasn't lost that touch around the basket. He will most likely be a place holder while we allow our younger talent to mature a bit and get used to playing together. Also with the way our cap is, he could also be around next year as well. But we love ZBo and he loves us and we are fortunate to have him around this year ahead.

Hell, if I had league pass, with the combo of Dame, ZBo, Monroe, Jabari, Mozzy, Toby, and Foye, this would be the team I'd wanna watch every single night.

In the 4 matchups over the upcoming season, how many times do you lose against the Bucks this season: more than 3, less than 5 (numbers 0-3 are ineligible), or 4?

With all due respect, we may lose a few times to Milwaukee in the regular season but in the post season, we will send your asses home whether it's in Milwaukee, or here in New Orleans.

It's good to have goals and keep an open perspective.

Barring a freak bus accident, it's hard to believe that the Hornets are not a playoff team this season. On one hand, your division is stacked, but on the other, you can never pass up an opportunity to put a competitive team together when it's available. With a lot of new faces on the roster, though, your team had a bumpy pre-season. How do you change your gameplan from what you've learned through pre-season to get everyone on the same page as quickly as possible?

The assistants do a great and thankless job during the preseason but when it comes to the regular season, there will be a few changes. As such, Greg Monroe going into the starting lineup. Most likely utilizing Tobias Harris as the super 6th man off the bench. And throwing up a lineup that best caters to the speed of Dame and the parts around him. Jabari will get a lot of run as will Randy Foye. I'm excited to juggle the pieces around to create a fun and exciting lineup.

We've seen Lillard come into training camp 3 consecutive seasons and struggle all three seasons. Have you ever questioned him being your cornerstone and shift that more toward Jabari or another player? Or is Lillard hill, a hill worth dying on for you?

Do you feel like you can play Mozgov and Monroe on the floor together or do you think you might have to move Mozgov to find a more natural power forward?

Lillard is still a cornerstone. Has he taken hits and been a slow grower? Absolutely. But he's grown from season one to season two. We are hoping for more success and growth in his junior year. We are still committed to seeing Lillard grow here in New Orleans and nothing has wavered us from trading him elsewhere. We are hopeful that he will be more dedicated to his basketball craft and put together an even better year following.

Monroe and Mozgov are excellent defenders and rebounders in the paint but we can't play them together on the floor at the same time unless we need a defensive stop at the end of the game due to their speed. It's going to be an adjustment but we are hopeful Mozgov can be our main defensive stopper off the bench.
