To kind of add some activity during the playoffs I plan to go back through and look at historical trades see how they played out what the instant reaction was, and determine who really won the trade. This will be an ongoing series I plan on attempting to do a trade each day or so. There are a ton of threads to go through (thanks Quail and Nick) because of so many trades, I'll just try to do some as I see them or if anyone has any suggestions you can post them in the comments.
First we are going to look at a blockbuster from a few seasons ago that appeared to be universally hated judging by the images and memes posted. The Lakers sent Kevin Garnett and Marcus Banks to the Nuggets for 3 first round draft picks (Pistons 05, Nuggets 05, Nuggets 07). The Lakers GM at the time couldn't handle the constant mocking that he'd won with a different GMs team and I believe this was the final nail in the coffin to try to shed that image and make the team his own.
But lets look at what the net return was:
Pistons 05 (#6 overall) - Andrew Bogut
Nuggets 05 (#16 overall) - Linas Kleiza
Nuggets 07 (#28 overall) - Traded to Spurs for 4 points
Not the worst haul considering Andrew Bogut is a 23 year old b/b Center with A potential in 4 important categories (ORB, DRB, PSD, BLK), but lets first dive into what KG has provided for the Nuggets. And also remember the Lakers were coming off a Championship season at the time he was traded.
In KG's first two season in Denver he was an All-Star and made 2nd team All-NBA leading the Nuggets to the playoffs after they had failed to reach the postseason in 4 consecutive years. Then this past year, he took on less of a scoring role, but had a career year in FG% while providing excellent leadership and defense in a season that ended with a world championship. Marcus Banks wasn't a bad player either was eventually involved in a trade that brought over Donyell Marshall, Randy Livingston, & Jason Williams. KG has helped lead the Nuggets this season to another #1 seed in a loaded western conference.
On the other hand Andrew Bogut started all 82 games this season and averaged a double double while Linas Kleiza played sparingly. The Lakers have made the playoffs for the second consecutive year and their future looks bright, with Bogut, Tony Allen, Mike Conley, and JR Smith to go along with vets Kobe Bryant and Jermaine O'Neal.
Winner? Nuggets
In the 4 seasons KG has been a Nugget he has won a championship, been on 3 All-Star teams, 2 All-NBA second teams, an All-Defense second team, and an All-Defense first team. The Nuggets have had high win totals with KG in the fold, winning 44 games in season 1, 50 in season 2, 65 in season 3, and 63 this year. But Bogut is not a bad consolation prize for TraywithanA and the Lakers especially given that this trade happened before he had the reigns of the team.
Stay tuned or offer any suggestions for other trades you'd like to see revisited.
Great idea, Bill. I have a few trades you could cover:
Rockets/Wolves - Chris Webber (S&T) for Jason Richardson/Tayshaun Prince/Rockets 04 1st
Sonics/Warriors - Shawn Kemp/Robert Pack/Adam Keefe/10 points for Jalen Rose/Jim Jackson/Chris Andersen/Michael Jordan

Yeah, but how did the new GM do after such a landslide trade?
Back in the day, I won the division a few times...
Some good suggestions here that I'll tackle later. But tomorrow/Friday I plan to take a deep dive into the trades that created the most recent Hawks super team.

A brief intermission while I'm still researching the Hawks dynasty of from the early 2000s. We will look at the Bucks/Hornets trade...aka the Artrapest.
Bucks Send:
Zack Randoplh
Chris Mihm
Sonics 04 1st
Cavs 03 1st

"shitty picks". Not my fault nick traded them away for overinflated Jermaine O'Neal.
tbf, I think this was fair value at the time.
I think the Bucks win the trade, but Zbo, Beidrins, Iguodala are a good return for a B/B Ron Artest who just averaged 11.8/4.6/2.4 on 44% shooting.
Thank you Ryan. Its okay for them to judge what I got in the trade (an artest that grew via TC), but when I discuss what those picks turned into, they throw rhat out the window because it happened well after the trade.
Ok I really hate to bail doug out on this but....when picks are involved you never know who wins until the picks are made and you see what happens.
Let's say for make believe that Nick isn't a (insert word to describe Nick) and trade away those picks.
Artest
For
Iggy
Biedrins
Randolph
Man I take that Fryeing trade right now in an instant. That is a sick ass front court and a mediocre player in iggy. I may do it for just the front court. This trade can't be called a trape sorry. Only one who got traped was Nick and Nick traped his damn self.
