ReviewBanana - Trade of the SLOE

Post by AngryBanana »

Hello everyone, this is Peeling On Empty and welcome to the next iteration of my attempt to do articles that involves not just my own interest, but everyones! Today, and hopefully moving forward this year I am going to review every trade that is done this season, I am going to start with D60, and go back if I can. So without further haste, lets get into the review.

Bryant deserves respect, just because he is cheap doesn't mean he can't be classy. The Pistons buy a player who is out of Wig's depth chart for cheap and hope that he can provide some more added cover in the paint. Blazers gets five points out of a guy that was never going to see the court except in an absolute blowout or injury situation.

Good move by both and I approve the deal.

This move is interesting trade. Threatt has not been a real threat at all since being drafted 9th a few seasons ago. I believe that Wig either hopes he bounces back in TCs moving forward, or bought some quality depth at PG that could be retained later at a decent price. It is interesting none the less given that Wig is trying to get points/assets back for players, but this is a longer term play compared to the selling off that he is doing. The Kings meanwhile continue their rebuild where a guy they got as part of the Ainge trade gets Darth even more assets for a guy that played very little for him.

Great move by the Kings, a little bit of an overpay by the Blazers in a vacuum.

Another trade between the two sides. It is one that had to be separate given the points going out, where Wig would have been over the allowable amount. Blazers get another guy that is under their control for a longer time on a team friendly deal. He is once again taking a bet that this player will get better long term and is looking towards the future. Frank also has that Wig trait of a good steal stat, that is somewhat unique for the player. Frank also has some good athletics that will allow him to play SF and PF. Kings also get more points from the Danny trade, now getting a net total of 34 in the process.

Once again I like both sides of this deal.

Oh hey a non Blazers trade. This is pretty straight forward. Bucks get their pick and the Cavs get some points for possessing a pick that probably wouldn't have amounted to much given the Bucks position. Thankfully this pick wasn't involved with the 76ers again getting hosed as well.

I both hate this deal personally, but like it for both sides. One team gets a player long term on a team friendly deal and the other gets some points from the only team that would pay to take the pick.

So this one is probably the first move of the D60 trades that are actually moving players of note. It boils down to Lakers getting a big (Mark Eaton), the SuperSonics getting another PG (Norm Nixon), and the Jazz getting paid to facilitate. For the Lakers they are covering a clear need for them. They have only one serviceable big on their roster this year and it was known in some circles that they were looking to move Norm for an upgrade to the roster where it is needed. Eaton is having a pretty solid season, and is about on par with his play while on the Supersonics. However, this consistent play is not something the Sonics can afford any longer and will risk losing him in the offseason, where the Lakers may have the ability to bring Mark back and can use that consistent force in the paint now as a contender.

For the Sonics, I like this trade in some ways. They get the best player in this deal, Norm Nixon, who will start immediately at PG on this team and will allow them to maybe get reorganized. While losing Eaton may not have been in the books for BigD, he can afford it with having Schayes. He also, like previously mentioned, doesn't have to worry about UFA with Eaton as well. He gets a quality PG on a year longer deal. He may have to worry about TC next year, but I think even if he gets hurt he will still be more than serviceable to this lineup. Now for the first grades of this deal. The only part I don't know about is the fact that the Supersonics look lost right now. If they continue to bottom out they may have Nixon but still not producing wins like BigD wants. It is a gamble for sure, but I think the cost is relatively low unless Nixon absolutely becomes trash at some point between now and next season.

For the Jazz they get five points to send out two guys that don't matter and and take on a PG who will start for his team. I would be ecstatic for that.

That was some good trade talks... good luck.

Oh man. This trade I feel like has very large implications across the league. My sources have informed me that the Bullets have told me that both Dantley and Pressey were dangled out to several teams prior to this trade being completed. Equally, several teams were interested in Rasmussen, just for him to say he liked the player too much to move him. Truly some interesting developments in this late hour....

From a trade perspective lets get at this. Lets start with the Bullets, Dantley is a real one, and trading him is no small move indeed. However, it appears he is appearing to move the better player for an aggregate better team, turning that into a great starting PG, albeit on a longer deal that would be preferred in Henderson, Cooper who can be a starting guard now for most teams, and a great prospect in Rasmussen. While I may give them a lower grade in this trade, it is from a short term perspective. They are a team that could fight for the win now, and while the aggregate could improve their overall performance they gave up a lot of sending out such a good player. I could see their move working out more in their favor in the long run, but its for sure risky in a potentially bad way.

The Lakers trade for Dantley, who I said previously is a guy. He is probably a top 25 player that I don't know that I would have traded away easily, but is on an Albert Pujols type deal of pay me total for what I will do now deal. Then there is Pressey, who could be a risky RFA player but also a great reserve guard for the Lakers. It seems like they always have several PGs on their team and they will continue that for the near future. This move is also risky, but at the same time it's one that is a win now move that LTS should be doing with Magic on his roster. He can always figure out the Dantley contract later if needed.

All in all I think I like both sides of this deal. Lakers are tying to win now with Magic, and I think Dantley is a great running mate, while the Bullets are trying to build depth. I am surprised to see a guy like Dantley get moved, and give the both sides some credit for such a big move, however I wonder if this hurts either side in the long run.

Ill be completely honest, I did not like this trade. I did not think Edgar Jones was worth 15 points. He is a g/g big, who is a backup at best I think. He maybe could be a spot starter, but nothing more with the fouling he does when he is on the court for more than 15 mins a game. That being said, the Pistons have gone 18 and 5 since that trade though. So, while he is not the starter, his production off the bench has provided the team with a presence that was maybe missing some before hand. However, it is still 15 points for a guy who fouls a lot and is on a one year deal. Also, Drew is not on the Kings roster anymore.

This trade was a spur of the moment, "yeah, why not" trade. I had been looking to move Rob since getting Porter and finally decided what I got was enough for a guy about to be an RFA that I did not want to pay max money to. The Pistons got a guy to further provide depth to the squad to go along with the previous deal we discussed with Edgar. What is interesting though is the lack of playing time that Rob has received since giving up so much to get him. He averages 11.5 mins a game and is slated to play one min according to the last depth chart. At this rate, will they even retain Williams in the offseason (who was averaging about 9 assists per game before being traded)? This deal seems even worse upon review, where it is another over pay for someone that may be good depth, but isn't being utilized at all currently.

Another trade that was somewhat spur of the moment. I will not go into detail about my side because I don't want to talk about myself, but I did get a great piece to compliment Hakeem. The Sonics got a haul though. They get Ralph, an interesting development piece in Sherod (who may turn into an expensive one in RFA though) points and two picks. Ralph should come in and immediately be a presence in the paint for the Sonics. While he was hit in TC, he is still showing what he can be, having a 20-20 game against Atlanta in his new outfit. If he rebounds in TC next season, the Sonics may have gotten a great compliment player for this roster. All in all, may be a solid haul for a reset of a build on what BigD felt was not the way. Also, Ralph doesn't go to the Bucks - so there is that too. I only give them a slightly lower grade because I am surprised at how there was no better offer.

And so the dumping begins. That's all this is. The Sonics have a lost season so they are selling of players to get a lower cap hit. Pacers did well to get 7 points for a guy who will be a rotation guy for two years as long as he doesn't get hit in TC next year.

This deal looks to me that the Bullets are upgrading Sichting for Sparrow, and swapping Oldham for Reynolds. Smart move by the Bullets to go get a quality bench pg from a team clearly trying to reset after the Dominique deal. Sparrow will be a great bench PG, he also cost way less than Rob Williams did, and will be retained for longer what will be a cheaper cost once RFA happens for Rob. The Sonics get 10 points for their good UFA deal and look towards the future.

Continuing my theme of spur of the moment trades. I had been wanting to offload Woodson and decided to take a swing at Macy when updating this article. Kings said yes, and here we are. Macy will slide right into the 2 guard spot, allowing the other Wilkins to be a bench player. Kings get 15 points for a guy that was starting to look more and more like he was going to stay a King after the trade deadline. They can now be even worse than they were before. I probably overpaid given I was probably bidding against myself, but I will take it if it means potential playoffs and the Kings and I have always had good talks.

OBJECTIVE: 2059 words (2000+ words = 6 points baseline)
SUBJECTIVE: This is doing a good job covering the whole league, I like the serialized format, and has done a quality job breaking down what each team gets, and grades are always fun. I'm giving it 3 points for now, knowing that the word count is capped on that contribution and reserving the last point to award at the trade deadline - if there are trades this article doesn't cover (Celtics' own trades excluded) in a reasonable amount of time, I'll withhold that point; if all trades made by the deadline get covered, I'll award the final subjective point to bring it to the maximum of 10 after the trade deadline.

UPDATE: They were covered. One extra point awarded.

TOTAL: 10 points

The big get of this trade is Cook going to the Bullets. It allows them another playmaker, at a decent cost, to man the second team. He would probably start on half the teams this season too which is great, then only sending 3 points and a second makes it even better. The Sonics get back a boat load of points and the Warriors dump some cap, albeit at a hefty price, but at the contract Carr is better than keeping him on.

This trade is probably a reaction to the previous trade. If you want to maintain the books while competing, you gotta send out while taking in if possible. The Bullets send out Lucas who was on a high end deal and older than Cook. The Pacers take him on for a late playoff push while taking on seven points.

Ok, so I guess the previous trade didn't go through for money reasons? They did add another team, so that must be it. It doesn't clearly say in the original post, but here is the redux of that deal. Bullets still get Cook, but have to send out what is probably a more reasonable pay so that drops their grade slightly. The Sonics now get more points it looks like while also getting Edgar Jones, who will not do much difference for this team probably. The Pistons pick up Wayne Cooper to help their playoff push and replace Jones off the bench. Greeps movement really doesn't change either.
