1984 San Antonio Spurs Preseason Presser

Post by Eazy P »

Good afternoon, Spurs fans and members of the media. We are thrilled to officially kick off the 1984-85 season with one of the most exciting and talented rosters we've ever had. We've made some bold moves this offseason to shape a team that we believe can hopefully compete for a championship.

Let me introduce the roster:

Isiah Thomas, our floor general. A proven leader with the heart of a champion.

Michael Jordan, the #1 overall pick — yes, you heard that right. We won the NBA lottery and got the most electrifying rookie in basketball.

Mark Aguirre, coming off an down season — is still a physical, versatile scorer at forward.

Kiki Vandeweghe, one of the league’s most efficient scorers, acquired via UFA to add firepower to the wings.

Byron Scott, a fast-developing two-way guard with explosive athleticism.

Mike Gminski 2-Time DPOY, acquired via trade is a rugged and skilled center who brings balance to the paint.

This is a new era of Spurs basketball.

I’ve had some good teams, but I’ve never had this kind of talent, and athleticism all at once. It’s going to be a challenge — a good challenge — to get these guys to gel, but you better believe we’ll be running, pressing, and scoring like no other team in the league.

Isiah and Jordan in the backcourt? That’s 94 feet of hell for any opponent.

Kiki and Aguirre at the wings? That’s buckets all day.

Gminski in the middle? Smart, tough, and underrated fake blue as Chad would say.

We’ve got shooting. We’ve got defense. We’ve got youth. And with the leadership of guys like Isiah and Mark, we’ve got the character too.

Now, I’ll be honest with you: talent doesn’t guarantee anything. We know that. Championships aren’t won on paper. They’re earned in the gym, in the trenches, day by day. And that’s what we’re focused on. Putting in the work. Earning the right to compete.

We don’t take this opportunity lightly. We don’t take this city’s support lightly either. We’re going to play hard, play together, and represent San Antonio with pride — win or lose.

With that said, if there are any questions as always, I will answer to the best of my ability.

We all know how the 1st couple of sims of the season can be a mirage. Looking at your schedule, do you think you'll come out swinging? Or will your team need a little time to marinate and gel?

I think my team will need a little more time. I've been going same for so long, IDK know how to put in a real DC. I haven't check out the schedule yet but I know it will be a challenge for me to figure things out. If all fails we'll add Malone to the roster via draft LOL...

Just kidding.

What was the mood like when the most highly sought after rookie ever in this league was finally picked #1 overall?

Steve Duin, the Oregonian...

Will anything less than a title be a disappointment with this collection of talent?

John James, Jackal Journal: You've made mention, maybe joking or not, that while you have immense talent you may consider going for more to fill out your depth and sure up some defense. Can you not?

The city and franchise felt great. Never thought we would ever even be in a position to draft MJ. Even with the worst record, we though a team may jump us and end up with another one of the greats in this draft. Before that during the 83 draft we though we would be getting Sampson and not even be one of the worst teams in the league defensively. But here we are in a position to make history in San Antonio. I just need not to mess this up lol.

We have to make the playoffs 1st. I have a history, at least in the past timeline of messing up a good thing. i am hoping not to repeat it this time around. Our 1st goal is to win the division then go from there. Hopefully it ends up with a parade in the city of San Antonio.

Defense win championship. The Bucks had the number 1 defense last season. one of the reasons we traded for Gminski was because he was the 2 time DPOY and we hope he brings his defense here to help hopefully take the team to another level defensively and on the boards. Something that was missing for this team since season 1.
