Chicago Bulls 1983 Preseason Press Conference

Post by logpmess »

Welcome everyone to our Preseason press conference. We are excited for our immediate future, but lets start in the past.

We were stuck in the middle. That's how we felt last season. We didn't have a route to the Finals. We didn't have a route to improving through the draft. We had to make a move. We decided to sell our players for the most capital possible. We were able to accumulate a large number of picks, which ultimately cost us our season. We ended up fourth in the lottery by the time everything had settled.

Come draft time, we loved Ralph Sampson. He seemed like a complete player to anchor a team. However, we were presented with an opportunity. Given the option to take an entire playoff team, we hopped on it. We are excited for Eaton, LaSalle, and Cheeks for the future. Gervin is going to give us a veteran presence and leadership.

Without a draft pick this season, we shifted to acquiring talent. We have traditionally been horrible at getting free agents, so we know we have to work the trade market. We acquired Marques Johnson. He is going to step in and be the final piece of the starting 5. We feel like we have a great team now that can get us into a contender. With backups Steve Johnson and Craig Hodges, we are able to have some depth as well.

We really like the acquisition of Ray Williams to give even more backup at the guard position. Then we were able to swing another star. Alex English was made available. We jumped on that opportunity and now we have too many scorers. It's a great spot to be in. We still have 5 first round picks over the next three years.

We are considering some additional player movement, especially for another post presence, but we think we are able to contend now with the team that we have.

Please, feel free to ask any questions.

So I know this is a preseason presser and all, but it posted on sim day and I can't help but comment on the sim 1 results. The Chicago Bulls showed up and showed out! Well done, logp. Did these results meet or exceed expectations? You mentioned preseason that players could be on the move. Is that still true?
Somehow I manage.

Would you have been as interested if I didn’t offer the draft pick in our initial deal? Did I oversell it?

We're happy with the outcome of Sim 1. We knew it would take some games to get the roster configuration correct and start building some unity in the locker room. This is about what we expected. We do have some concerns that our two losses were by a large margin. Even worse is that it was to two division rivals. Hopefully, we can figure that out.

We do have an influx of really talented guards. We would be narrow-minded not to be open to moving some of our players. Hopefully, we can get a deal that would boost our team without taking away key pieces.

We were ready to walk away and build around Sampson and our future firsts. It would have been difficult to have tanked with the rest of the league. We don't do well by scheming to lose games. So, we are happy to have only had one year of losing. Thanks for your assistance in that.
