Detroit Pistons 1983 Preseason Presser

Post by tbone963 »

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our presser for the season. I know you're all busy so we'll get to it.

Two seasons ago, we had trouble finding our identity and figuring out where the team was headed. That season ended with a disappointing 16 wins. However, light always finds its way through darkness and that light is named Terry Cummings. Originally projected #2 and #6, the lottery was not kind and gave us #4 and #8. Well maybe, it seems, the lottery gave us exactly what we needed. Selecting Terry at #4 was the greatest decision this franchise has made so far and that decision was vindicated with us doubling our wins to 33 and Terry winning ROTY. The rest of the draft gave us Clark Kellogg, Terry Teagle, and Edmund Sherod. Clark and Terry were great for us and while we hated to see them go, we knew their value would help us bring in the players we needed to take this team to the next level. Edmund continues to be a spark plug for us and he's gotten even better during training camp. Through some free agency acquisitions, along with trading out of the recent draft, we feel we acquired the pieces needed to make this a playoff-caliber squad.

This team looks a little different than last year and that's because it is. But the one consistent is our core in Terry Cummings. The addition of Micheal Ray Richardson and Dennis Johnson in our back court gives us the perimeter defense and ball handling we were missing. Wayne Cooper gives us the big we needed to defend the glass, while allowing Terry to play in his true PF position. Paul Pressey is a prospect we're loving more and more. His training camp showed he's determined to better himself and won't stop until he's at the top. Mike Woodson was someone we were ecstatic to sign in free agency and are excited to see his multi-level scoring in action. Finally we got some steals in Cedrick Hordges, Randy Smith, and Harvey Catchings to fan out our depth.

We can't wait to get to work and show you what this team is capable of. I'll now take any questions.

Since you mentioned sliding in the draft and still landing the ROTY, I'd like to know about how you're looking forward to the 84 draft. Looks like you have once again positioned yourself to land multiple picks in the lottery. Is your intention to hold those picks until the draft, or are you thinking about cashing in the picks for a superstar that would get your new core over the top?

As we all know, this draft class is looking good and landing anywhere in the lottery seems like a good way to get another star player. Our intention for now is to hold onto the picks and see how the season plays out. We'll reassess around the deadline if we need to use our capital to make that final push.

Thank you for that. Here at the Pistons, we represent a blue-collar community in Detroit of hard working people and I feel that sort of tenacity and resilience can apply anywhere especially the basketball court. We like guys that put in the work to not only better themselves, but better the guys around them. If i had to quantify it I'd say things like rebounds and steals are something we appreciate in a player because we know excelling in those categories takes physicality, hustle, and determination.
