S4 !983 Warriors Presser: The Favorite Runners Up

Post by greepleairport »

Did we speak this offseason? Then you already know. We had a disastrous UFA. So disastrous, in fact, that we considered blowing it all up. Having a player as good as Moses Malone, though, seemingly ruined the trade value of an All Star like Robert Parrish.

As prohibitive favorites going into the playoffs, we felt pretty good about our chances. Running up against the Blunt Force Trauma Blazers was our primary fear, but once they got swept by the Kings, we admittedly started to sweat. When Parrish left Game 6 of the Conference Finals with a minor injury that would inevitably hobble him for Game 7, we knew our chances had dropped significantly. To that point, Parrish was playing better than Moses in the playoffs, much to our surprise.

…So when someone just offered me 15 points for him? Yeah, that was… like…

But I digress.

If you’re going to lose to anyone, in my opinion, you want to lose to the team that won it all. And it was still damn close, WITH a hobbled Parrish. But, hats off to Chad and the KC Kings. They saw a challenge and built themselves an incredible team that took down my twin towers. Well done, sir. If I wasn’t so butt hurt I would have given you your kudos much sooner.

The break from sim league was mostly depressing, but I came back with hopes of signing a nice FA, but i <expletive deleted> that up big time, so I was depressed once again.

Hence the trade block bump. Hence a few respectable but not ideal offers for Moses, and a few unconscionable offers for Parrish.

The only silver lining was Kelvin Ransey, who’s not an answer to anyone or anything, but he’s a good fit for the kind of basketball we’re getting ready to play in Golden State.

So, goodbye to Eddie L. Johnson. Good luck in Portland (we were outbid on you anyway). And so long Mike Mitchell. We really Fryeing miss you, and had you in our plans big time to come back… but we would have been outbid on you, too, anyway. We wish you the best of luck in San Diego, where we’re certain The JNR will take good care of you and quite possibly kick our ass this year.

In the meantime, it seems like the rest of you all forgot. We still have the twin towers, Robert Parrish and Moses Malone. Will we win it all? I don’t know, perhaps not, but we’re always in the mix with those 2. So we’ll ride on with them, package them up with our next high caliber offseason acquisition of David Thompson (welcome to the Bay, sir), and run it back.

Who’s got the first question?

Chet Youbetcha, Dimmadome News: Congrats on making two conference finals back to back, I know you are not happy about it but its a great accomplishment. However, is there any concern that your time with Moses may turn into a Delmar Lopez type situation for you??

It’s absolutely my concern. We find ourselves backed into a bit of a corner right now with our two best players’ timelines. We expected not to come up empty handed in UFA rd 1, but because we did, we’re a little more thin on depth than last season. We also don’t have much trade capital besides Moses. This is exactly the position we found ourselves in with Delmar back in the future, when we decided to trade Delmar in his prime.

We’re going to hang tight for now, though. We think we still have what it takes to win a championship and we’re not giving up on our big guys yet.

Your team has appeared in 2 consecutive conference finals. Is this year finals or bust and what do you think you need to do to final get over the hump to get there?

GWR: You had the highest scoring margin in the preseason this year. Do you think that sort of differential is sustainable, particularly on defense?

Steve Duin, Portland Trailblazers beat writer for the Oregonian...

You mentioned receiving underwhelming - some would say "insulting" - offers for Robert Parish. Any chance we're going to see a public Golden State Warriors No-Trade list?

You're on a short list of GM's that I have seen turn great talent with limited depth into a champion over night.
If you are short a piece or two, describe the player prototypes that would absolutely lock in a ship for you.

Fair question. Our first conference finals appearance was a surprise to us. We figured we would not allow another conference finals exit by adding another baller big man like Robert Parrish to the team. ...but we lost then, too! We figured our biggest weakness was at PG, losing Phil Ford in the prior offseason, so we set our sights on a guy like Johnny Moore or Norm Nixon in UFA as our most viable targets... and we sent our UFA bids to a personal account, not The Negotiator. So we were ass out in UFA Rd 1.

Had we landed a Johnny Moore or Norm Nixon, I think we'd be poised as favorites again this year. Instead, I know we're a really tough team to beat, but weaker than last year. So, unless a decent opportunity rolls along, we're going to run it back and hope for the best, and not feel the world collapse upon us if we come up short.

Howdy do, conference neighbor! Losing Mike Mitchell, and seeing James Bailey's PSD, DRB and BLK tank in TC, we're likely to be less solid defensively this year. I'm bummed about that.

Not that preseason dictates anything, but every team we faced in preseason had a .500 or better record, and we lost 1 game by 1 point. So we're happy with those results, and the differential. Perimeter D has always been a problem in Golden State, but we're not a disaster there this year, and our twin towers are holding it down in the post. I think we'll be a top 10 defensive team for sure, if not top 5.

Making a claim like that is going to give me a .500 record to start the season though haha

I don't know why it doesn't occur to me to do this. It's my kind of petty. But, since someone else thought of it first, I think I have to abstain.

Well, that type of player was available in UFA, and available in some deals I looked into for Parish, but trading for talent at a different position didn't make enough sense to me. We're flat out of assets besides Parish and Malone, so to add a piece would require replacing a piece, and I don't think I'll find a comparable replacement for Parish that fits our mold.

Johnny Moore would've looked hella nice in the Golden State... damn...

Also I freaking miss Mike Mitchell, even if he was apparently horribly underutilized here. Kudos to the Clips for recognizing top tier talent regardless of his stat line.
Somehow I manage.
