1981 New York Knicks Presser - The Buck Stops Here

New York Knicks 1981 Season Opening Press Conference

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for being here today. It’s a new season, a new opportunity, and there’s a refreshing buzz in the air about Knicks basketball. After a mediocre season, an exciting offseason is exactly what we needed.

We came out last year with untapped confidence and was consistently humbled on the way to finishing ten games under .500. Our road record? Laughable. Every time we left the garden our game was worse than the subway smell in July. But today isn’t about last season. Today is about the future, and the future is in New York.

First, let’s talk about the draft. This changed everything.. We shocked the world and won the lottery—nobody, including us, saw that coming. But we did. We shocked the world again by selecting Buck Williams over Isiah Thomas. We were dreaming of Buck falling to us before the lottery, so it was always Big Buck for the Big Apple. Buck is a guy we believe can be a cornerstone for this franchise. He fills a huge need for us at power forward immediately. His toughness, rebounding, and all-around game are going to be a problem for all, but hopefully Dawkins and the Nets more than any. Buck is over flowing with potential and can grow into one of the best at his position.

But we weren’t done there. We knew we needed a real floor general, someone to set the table for our scorers. So we shipped in Rickey Green from Detroit. He’s got the speed, the vision, and the leadership we were missing. Thrilled to have him running the show at the Garden. We also worked in a little future prep by moving on from Billy Knight for a couple picks. The fans here expect active, non complacent off season moves and thats what we gave them.

Now, let’s talk about the man who is the show—the legend himself, Julius Erving. There was plenty of talk about his future here, and yes, we explored options, because he deserves the best. But now, with Buck in the fold and our roster shaping up the way it has, I can say with confidence that the best place for Dr. J is right here in New York. He’s not just a superstar—he’s an icon of the game, and now we’re in a position to give him a team that can truly compete. He belongs here, leading this team, bringing excitement to this city, and making a run at what we all want—a championship.

So, to sum it up—yes, last season we learned, this off season, we got lucky, and now this year, we’re built differently. We’re hungry and I think it’s time for some hardware to make its way back to Madison Square Garden.

Alright, that’s enough from me. Let’s open it up. Who’s got questions? Preferably good ones.
Welcome to the Garden!

Steve Duin, Blazer beat writer with the Oregonian...

Last season, Freeman Williams was buried on your bench. He has considerable potential and he's just 25. How does he fit into your rotation now that Rickey Green is in the fold?

Great question. Freeman still slots in as our 6th man and we are really looking forward to seeing how he preforms in training camp this year. His minutes will uptick this year, giving him a chance at the 6th MOY award, but with the arrival of Rickey Green, Darrell Griffith will be our starting SG, his natural position in our opinion. Freeman knows his scoring ability makes him a major piece to our success.

We feel the same way. Excited to see this team hit the hardwood. Darrell is our SG and we plan to build this team around him and Buck. I think we asked him to be too much of quarterback last year. Thats why we brought in Rickey, to really open up more of Darrell's scoring potential.

Stephen A Smith: Now that you've selected Buck Williams, could you take us back to the discussions leading up to this pick? When you were evaluating top prospects like Buck Williams and Isaiah Thomas, was there a feeling within the front office that Buck was unequivocally the number one choice? Or were there voices, perhaps advocating for Isaiah Thomas, given his very different skillset and position, even though you ultimately decided on Buck?

Who said that? Was that you kid? You said your name is Stephen A Smith? Who the hell let a 14 year old in here? No no, he can stay, thats a great question son. Such a big voice on such a little person, I dont know what it is about you, but something tells me you are going to make a real name for yourself in the business. You're always welcome at my press conferences, just be nice to the other reporters.

I wouldn't say Buck was unequivocally the #1 choice, we all knew Isiah had the potential to be a superstar, but we never really thought he would be a available for us. So the internal conversations were all about "What if Buck drops to us?" He was the Day 1 ready PF that could be immediately plugged in and complete a starting 5 we thought could make a legit playoff push.

Frankly, if Buck wasn't there, we were blowing it up. "What could we get for Dr. J, Billy Knight, Corzine?" Those were the talks pre draft. Then we were faced with Isiah AND Buck. There were a few early voices wanting to continue the blow up and build plan, but nothing is guaranteed. What we did know for sure was we had a living legend in the building and Buck was ours if we wanted him. The opportunity to win now with the Dr. in NYC quickly turned into the exciting and clear direction this organization wanted to take. Buck was destine to be a Knick, you can't get in the way of fate and we couldn't be happier.

Thanks for coming Stephen, grab a juice box on your way out. Next question..

Your team look primed to win it all this season. Is it championship or bust and who do you see as the team that will be you biggest competition.

I am glad some one else sees what everyone in this building sees. Especially after training camp. This team was absolute gym rats this offseason, spent time together, pushed each other, accepted the new faces and is as confident as I have ever seen a team. So yes, we belive we are a playoff team and will be a tough matchup for anyone we face once we are there.

That being said, there is a ton of talent in our division and the rest of the league and we wont make the mistake of taking anyone lightly. We are well aware that the defending champs and Dawkins are just across the river from us. That will be the battles we have to win this season. Boston also won a lot of games last season. I wouldnt miss any Bucks Knicks games this year either. Those will be great games.

Thanks for comin. Next..

How are you going to make sure that pick swap with the bucks doesn't come back and bite you? Are you moving some of your rookies?

No need to make a decision on that yet. How we use the picks we got in the deal with the Bucks will be determined by the results of this season. We see being able to build a playoff caliber team while gaining future assets as a luxury if anything. It gives us the flexibility decide when and how we want to reload. If those picks are mismanaged then I'll prob be out of a job and you can ask the next GM.

Picks Emmington of the SLOE Gazette,

While you have talked about pushing for the championship, your team is still relatively young. Do you think making the push so soon may end up hurting them in the long run? I know Julius only has so many years left but if you don't make a deep playoff run this season, do you think you'll have to start a rebuild again?

Picks...my guy....I didnt even see you back there. Almost walked out. Great question - I think it really is a luxury to be able to compete for championship with a young core. Playing with veteran legends in a winning culture is great experience. While we have a solid core now, we have not lost sight of the future. We feel prepared with future assets to slowly retool over the next couple years. If we do that correctly then hopefully we can avoid a full rebuild in the future.

Griffith had an amazing camp and looks like the future star of this league, and you picked up Buck with an amazing jump in the draft all the way to #1, is this how you saw your offseason going after that tough finish that saw you miss the playoffs as the 8th team? How did these 2 big events change your mindset coming into this season?

Uh yeah, I've never seen a kid have a camp like that. Skys the limit for him and this team. Can honestly say I put very little thought into the idea that we would be in the top spot and be able to take Buck last offseason, but here we are. The minute we got Buck we went looking for a true PG and hit the gas. All systems go, lets see where the card fall. Have a good day.
