And for you, more traditionalists -- Draft Night from the Mavs GM perspective.

And for you, more traditionalists -- Draft Night from the Mavs GM perspective.

Initially, we were pleased to be in the 3rd slot in the draft. I got the third spot and was ecstatic to move up three places, from 6 to 3, especially since I saw the top three players, Herman, Stewart, and Fudge, in that order, looked to be in an echelon above the rest of the draft. But the more I looked at it, the more I liked Herman and Stewart.

Herman filled my most significant need: a cheap, young, dominant point guard. Stewart and Fudge were very similar, but Stewart was ready to play now. The odds seemed to favor that the Bobcats would take Herman, but there was an off chance they would because they already had The Funk developing at the same position and on the same timeline. So there was a chance Herman dropped to the second pick. The slim chance of that happening did factor into what I would give up to get him. But, in the worst-case scenario, in the second slot, I would get Stewart.

Looking back, it might be a blessing in disguise that Herman got picked first. Getting a player that is ready to play now is going to be awesome. Stewart, the runner-up, is probably the better player, with a better chance of going purple and becoming a superstar. But I still need a point guard.

Communication during the draft could have been better. I started a few trade talks, but no one came looking for the 3rd pick, which I found odd. And the communication that was coming through only sometimes reached my desk. More than once, I returned to a message that had been deleted before I could see it. I still wish I knew what those messages said.

I think it was unrelated, but at 3:30 am on the morning of the draft, I woke up randomly. Since I was already up, I decided to check messages.

I had been in negotiations with a couple of people, some more responsive than others. After a couple of tries to move prospects and not get anywhere, I got an offer to move to Kaminga, which I had to consider for a while. I like him, but I don't love him. But next season may be his breakout year. The night before the draft, I had decided that moving up a spot was worth moving to Kaminga.

The deal to move Kaminga was nearly complete when we realized that Kaminga was still under RFA restrictions. Damn, bylaws.

On the point guard front, things looked bleak. My problem now is I want to avoid moving Kaminga for an old point guard, especially if that point guard's contract will be 95 million when he's 32.

I did have one deal for a point guard that almost got there, but, in the end, it didn't. So, Having spent the previous days reaching out across the league searching for a point guard, it is time to move on from searching for a point guard. I have finally come to the conclusion that I am just going to train one of the guys I already have to be my next Point God.
