Season 51 OKC Press Conference

Post by AngryBanana »

Good morning all! As I am sure some of you have already skimmed past this point, I will say boo on you. If you have not, I appreciate you taking my opinions seriously (even though I even think they are questionable.) So to start off, Season 50 was a great one all around. I initially had serious aspirations for a deep playoff run, but quickly took note of how my team was constructed against the rest of the league and decided to pivot a little bit. I moved newly signed JRod to Denver for Brendon Silva and RJB. While I initially thought this move would tank my team, RJB actually brought some stability that JRod was not providing. He brought a defensive presence and was another rebounder that I could have on the court, which was huge since Oturu took a hit in TC and became a liability to a degree as a starter. Thankfully I also had Maker on my team, who had an outstanding season. He truly grew into a top center last season, where I think he will stay in the top 3 centers through this contract and next potentially. I was feeling good about stealing a first round from someone in the playoffs until Wade got hurt at the end of the season. After that it was just playing with house money. We lost to a really good Pacers team in the playoffs. Wade going down did show me how well Brooks can play though, which was a benefit as well.

Going into this season, I had Wade on a RFA max already and would enter the tax conversation, so I wanted to try to really start competing. I made a trade with Nick to get Ben Franklin and to have Waters return home from the Pelicans for Kerry Powell and Silva. This gave me another good wing, a good guard, and most importantly the access to MLE that I did not have prior. Draft was quite on my front due to not having a pick. Then in RFA we had three guys on the docket. Wade was a no brainer max. I considered Lathrop a good get at his price, but he then got hit in TC. I also brought back Chatham on a decent deal as well. UFA was just me trying to solidify my depth, mainly trying to get another wing to go with RJB and Franklin since I know I have to compete with what was just Delmar originally, but add Pearman to the group. So out of the MLEs we threw out there, Rickly signed with us.

I have some high hope for my team. I think if the cards are dealt right, I could be a potential championship team, but I do hope to at least be competing for the Omega conference title. We have good depth across the board and some players that can do a little bit of everything. Wade had another outstanding TC this year so I look to him, Maker, and Franklin to be my leaders this season. TC was also very kind to Oturu after punching him in the face last season, which after trading Powell away and betting on him to bounce back, was a very pleasant surprise. Anyways my starting five this season will probably be:

1. Waters
2. Wade
3. Franklin
4. Oturu
5. Maker
First bench player: Brooks

On a separate note, I am happy to see the Cavs start to make some moves to develop their team more, and to have SuperDog come into the fold with us. I am excited to see how they and K100 do. The best part is that SuperDog, who of the four of us is the newest, probably has the best chance at a championship. If that happens I will forever feel shamed considering how long I have been around. :)

If you have any questions please ask!

Defensively, your roster appears to be capable of being a terror for opposing teams. Your offense is a bit more interesting given it seems to be a group of more balanced skill sets as opposed to dominant at any one thing. How do you think you will try to attack teams to get the most from your possessions?

Im thinking it will be an inside approach, but my team will be taking more 3s than last season. We were terrible at the 3 ball last year and it hurt us. Adding Franklin, Waters, and Rickly will for sure stabilize that some where one of the three will always be on the court. We also will have two great facilitators starting in Waters and Wade, which should allow players like Maker and Franklin more scoring opportunities.

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: You have a lot of depth on this team competing for minutes off the bench. What 2nd unit positions are still up for grabs and who's competing for them?

I think the biggest choice for me will be how to use Rickly off the bench. I am thinking PF, but f RJB struggles at SF, I might have to swap them out. My second team second guard spot (who will not get a lot of mins) will be a spot worth monitoring too. It might be Daniels but he is a little on the slow side and I plan to use him as more of a backup defensive presence on the 3 as needed I think.

You have been very patient with your builds over the years and then strike a big trade to lure in star quality player when you are ready to compete. Last time was Josh Jackson and this round was Ben Franklin. What have you learned from those previous teams that you are applying to this build?

While neither guy are going to be what JJ was to that other build, I did think JRod was the guy last year. So to me, it is knowing when to strike and when to give up on that build. I knew that last year was a wash and no reason to have a tax bill, so I reset trying put off my reset year back one year.

In all I went from JRod, my 1 this past year and in 2042, Kerry Powell, and Brendon Silva for RJB, Franklin, and Waters. So staying flexible is important.

Whereas the Clippers lamented their standing in the front court as a top tier team, your front court is pretty bangin' with Makur Maker and Daniel Oturu. Your backcourt ain't nothin' to sneeze at either. Ay yo, Pearman or not, you comin for me bro?! Cuz plz don't, I don't need another K100 on my hands.

Seriously though, do you have Maker or Oturu as the true front court leader?
Somehow I manage.

Maker is #2 guy on my roster. Oturu redeemed himself with his good camp, but I will rely on him to be the other guy down low as a great complimentary player.

Justin Bieber, Teremana.com: Congrats for making the playoffs. But, let's face it, fans are not happy with the GM. You promised Championships, parades, and stimulus Checks back in 2023 when you were hired. Your winning % is only .496 and you have no rings. OKC fans are posting on Twitter and Facebook, your "1 year player strategy is a disaster." With the exception of Wade and Oturu, OKC keeps players an average 1.3 years before you trade him or release him. Have you thought maybe giving your players more time to develop a team chemistry before you decide to dump them after 1 year?

Second I am glad they are not using Myspace.

Third You missed Brooks Jackson who is going on his third year with the team. Where Clay and Joseph both started their careers in OKC.

I am hoping to actually bring some stability to the team this year and see if that cohesion will help this roster.

Random Reporter: Staying on the Franklin trade topic, I thought Silva was an awesome pickup for you, another young guy with the potential to grow into the star 2nd wing you've been looking for. He'd also make a very balanced trio with Maker and Wade. So...what made you decide to move him for an aging Franklin?

I felt that this could be a good year to make a win now move based on what some of the other teams were doing. It felt to me that I was maybe one to two players away from being a serious champion contender, which I hope Franklin will be that one missing part. While I liked Silva, he would have probably taken another two years to be that player I was looking for.

I also did not want to mess with him in RFA next season. I did not know what he would require to get back. If he required another contract on scale with Oturu, I would have Wade and Oturu on large deals as well on my books, and Maker following suit shortly after.

You seem to have a good strategy for your team. What are your plans for the bench?

For now, I am expecting the brunt of the work to fall on RJ Barrett, Brooks, and Rickley. With Chatham and Badham getting some use as well.

Aside from the Lakers who do you think will be your biggest competition this season?

Whoever it is, I know it won’t be the Jazz.

Will this be the year the Thunder contend for a championship or will it be another early playoff exit?

I’d love to get past the second round for once. I think I’m a top 4 team, who does have the chance at a championship given the right circumstances.
