Absolutely. And you can see by our free agent acquisitions. We won't be losing any defense from the 5 spot with Foyle joining the mix. In fact, he's probably slightly stronger at protecting the rim, but he doesn't bring the offense Vin gave our team. Losing Bowen is a blow on defense because we considered him the best defender in the league on the perimeter, but Andrei and Larry, we think, are improving in those areas. Overall though we will have to pick up the slack as a unit on defense.Xist2Inspire wrote:Random Reporter: With both Vin Baker & Bruce Bowen now playing elsewhere within the Pacific, is defense still the #1 priority for the LA Lakers?
Balls O'Hard: Thats a fair assumption and a good question. I'll get on my soapbox for a bit and explain myself. When your negotiating with other there's a few things needed, but mostly operating under the assumption of good faith is probably as important as anything. There was a few times this offseason where general managers would offer a deal and when you think about it and accept those terms then you're told they're not good with it, you have to lose trust with that GM. To get to your question, I don't know if this is a situation where the trade scene is devolving into a lawless wild west, but i think the only way to combat it is getting vocal when things like this happen. I don't think compensation is needed, in fact i really dislike what happened with the Bucks and the Knicks from the "agreed" trade all the way to the point compensation for it. I'm also not naive enough to think once a GM does this they'll be on a no trade list. I think the Sonics GM put it well earlier in his presser, that everyone's always going to be in it for themselves. But i'm a firm believer to let reputation police trade principles and not the fear of having to compensate the other owner.DarthVegito wrote:You were very vocal about your dealings with various GMs in the off-season. Sounded like there were failed trades, but the reasons they failed sounded like your trading partners had some character issues.
That being said, with the various "incidents" that happened during the off-season, do you think GMs in the league are becoming less and less trustworthy? Worried more about themselves and leaving their principals at the door?
Balls O'Hard: In all honesty, the West is always a bit of a gauntlet to get through. There's always some lower seeds knocking off the top guys. We've been that lower seed, and unfortunately last season we were the ones getting beat. I think looking at the team, we've got the guys to compete for another 5 years or so, and we'll have to take advantage when the time's right to kind of go "all in". As for now, we're in that mode where we're going to see what Kirilenko and Hughes can bring to the table, evaluate, then possibly make a move. I do think we'll give the Pacific a run and after that we'll do our best in the playoffs.C-Prej wrote:With your unexpected exit from round two, do you feel you made enough changes to bring you another title this season?
Balls O'Hard: We certainly hope he can fill his potential but we don't expect he will be making the All Star team. We have a very team oriented offense and we want to make sure we keep Larry as efficient as he can be. We do expect Larry to kind of take over some Baker's scoring load and we think his touches will naturally increase knowing that.coltsguy510 wrote:Is this the season that Larry Hughes goes from an average player with potential to an all-star who has fulfilled that potential?
Balls O'Hard: Ak and Bowen are two very different players, both with their own strengths and weaknesses. So we have to be open minded as a coaching staff to not compare him to Bruce and let Andrei do what he does best. Bruce was a defensive stopper that could hit the 3 every now and then. 3 and d guy. AK will be asked to do a lot of the same stuff on defense, but he will also contribute on the boards, be asked to be a playmaker and even create his own offense through rebounding. We're excited but also want to remember he's only 20.JNR wrote:GWR: How much pressure do you think should be put on AK47 to fill the hole left by Bowen?

How concerned are you with the overall 3-pt shooting and what effect will it have on teams crowding the paint?

Balls O'Hard: We didn't want to overpay to retain our guys when we felt we could get suitable replacements on our current team or for a min deal. We're always impressed with the Kings organization. They've always found creative ways to keep their team in the conversation.NOLa. wrote:Your team has had quite an overhaul, considering the role players that played a big part on your team for a few seasons ans contributed a lot of wins to your team.
