Sacramento Kings Media Day 2001

Wow, we are already into the 12th season of this league. A lot has changed, and a lot has stayed the same.

The Kings organization suffered a very early 1st round exit to end the 2000-2001 to the <expletive deleted> Grizzlies. The cornerstone of our build, centered around defense, completely failed us and could only muster up a single win in five games, three of those at home. This came after our very close call of making the Finals the season before, causing me to reconsider the team I had going forward for other various reasons. Another big factor going into the offseason was Tracy McGrady and Antonio Daniels entering RFA with an already max contract on the books and no first round pick heading into one of the deepest drafts we've had.

I made a big move early in the draft by trading Camby for Gilbert "Agent Zero" Arenas. I felt the Kings needed a new direction, and with Camby making nearly 25% of the salary cap and 27 years old, it was either keep the team as is and hope something clicks or swing for the fences. Arenas definitely caught my eye in scouting the top of the draft. After the Sonics were publicly displeased of missing out on Pau, we made a play for Arenas using one of my main building blocks of Camby to bring him to Sacramento. Camby will be missed, as he was a very underrated center is this league. With Arenas, we feel McGrady and Arenas will become one of the most lethal backcourts in the league after a few seasons of development.

Going into RFA, we had an easy choice of super-maxing Tracy McGrady. Antonio Daniels, for some reason, was rumored as a possible "let go" if he had gotten a max bid. This couldn't be further from the truth, as we have been very happy with Daniels progression as a combo guard. There aren't a lot of balanced combo guards in the league that can shoot 48% from the field. Daniels will help balance the backcourt while Arenas grows. Between the three, I feel we have our starting 1-2-3 that can score 15+ PPG each, making our usual vanilla offense a little harder to defend.

Going into free agency, we did recognize not only a need to fill our frontcourt, which was nonexistent. We made a cheap trade with the Grizzlies to grab Gheorge Muresan. We then targeted several high-value targets we felt would make a big difference on our team. I couldn't believe I was able to sign both Vin Baker and Bo Outlaw. Baker is a well balanced scoring threat that is strong down low, and Bo Outlaw was a 1st Team All Defense selection this season. The contracts are very friendly and helped us fill the rest of our team without going crazy over the cap.

We feel good going into the 2001-2002 season, and while this team isn't as strong as previous teams in our history, the potential is there several years down the road to become something special. This season is just a building block and we hope to remain competitive in one of the strong and deepest Pacific divisions in recent memory. We look forward to another strong performance this season.

Random Reporter: With the rest of the West going big, how confident are that your guard-heavy offense can seriously compete? Also, with Muresan, Baker, and Outlaw either at or nearing the 30-year mark, is this a finished product, or just a temporary roster to hold off on a full rebuild?

We, the Kings, have always had a "big" since the start of this league. For the seasons we've competed, we have had Karl Malone, Elden Campbell, and Marcus Camby. This new direction will hopefully lead to success as well, to do something different than everyone else is doing.

Bo Outlaw and Vin Baker are two year options for the team going forward, nothing more. We have always made moves each season to better our team, so if a frontcourt piece is on the market we would definitely look to possibly adding more youth and talent to the frontcourt for a long-term solution.

Nathan Sliver, sevenfortyseven.com: With a 22 year old T-Mac and a 19 year old Arenas, you're set to have a championship caliber core for years. How many years from now do you see yourself as a legit championship contender?

Do you worry that Daniels will follow the same career arc as former Kings standouts Eric Strickland and Shandon Anderson and descend into mediocrity now that he has gotten his first taste of a big fat contract and he is set for life?

Tracy McGrady is entering the prime of his career after another positive training camp, but Arenas still has plenty of room to grow on offense. He is very raw and could use another two training camps, and also a couple of individual trainings, for him to become the scoring threat I know he will be.

Arenas' offense is similar to Daniels, so we have hopes he can immediately come in and make an impact. In terms of championships, we are probably a few seasons away from putting together that kind of team.

Daniels is a much different player than Shandon and Strickland I believe. The former two Kings were alphas on an already alpha-filled team, whereas Daniels is the consummate team player we have big plans for. Daniels should be able to finally thrive at his natural position at PG and is an efficient scorer that can get to the free throw line, which I love. His defense is average, but at 6'4 he should give most PGs fits any given day. While it is sad that Strickland and Shandon never lived up to their hype they had given themselves, there is a big reason neither of them lasted longer than their rookie deals with the team. Daniels had earned it, and we don't forsee any decline as he gets better.

GWR: How much do you see Arenas contributing early on? Are you going to start him or use his scoring off the bench?

Gilbert is right now slotted as the starting SG and will play secondary PG. I would have preferred dor him to come off the bench and have McGrady as the starting SG, but we missed out om several SF targets in UFA and have to improvise. The main goal was to have Arenas earn 30 mpg to get the +3 bonus, so either way he was going to be relied on heavily.

Early on I do expect Arenas to go through growing pains. His defense is still not developed and his inside scoring has barely scratched the surface of his potential, but I don't think it is out of the question he can still score at an efficient 44% rate and get to the free throw line. If he can make waves on offense as we expect, he will be a contributor.

Your formula has become a phenomenon in this league. With so many teams trying to copy and re-write the formuala, how do you try to stay ahead?

Also, do you feel you have a part of the Bucks heart inside of you with Gilbert Arenas and Bo Outlaw on your team?

Tim Cowlishaw - The Seattle Times

What's this phenomenal formula I've heard about? Do they sell this said formula in Sacramento? And finally, will this formula win me a championship?

Sports Guy Bill Simmons here, a lot of the contracts on your team seem to be a very team friendly with team options, and only young good players tied up longterm. How much effort ane emphasis does the front office put into research for this? Is this something that can be maintained?

We stay ahead by observing trends in the league and go against the grain. A lot of teams have finally switched to a more defensive approach to building, so without abandoning defense we simply focuses more on getting scoring threats. A big part of fielding a competitive team is to perform a SWOT analysis oddly enough.

I feel with Arenas and Outlaw, we make the Bucks jelly in the butt.

Honestly I'm still trying to get my hands on this formula. When I want to be competitive, and when the opportunity is present, I will be a competitive team. I make smart, calculated moves to minimize as much risk as possible in this game. I think some GMs see my moves in offseason, trades, and adjustments in my gameplans that I have a formula that tells me what to do. All I do is plan, not crunch numbers.

If the formula was real, it's a failure since I have no rings to show for it. Maybe its just a regular season formula.

It has become a top priority for my team. It has taken a lot of patience and sometimes I messed up, but luckily I have stabilized my cap being spent on a solid starting 5 and good backups.

A lot of planning goes into not just finding the right players in UFA, but also in considering a fair market value vs expected value in terms of other teams bids. Every bid I give out, I make sure if I happen to win the bid I dont kick myself if I do. If you win the bid, you should be comfortable and excited, but unfortunately we saw the exact opposite happen to a few teams. Vin Baker was my very acquisition, as I felt he was underappreciated for what he brought to the Lakers' two very winning seasons. Outlaw is on thw friendliest contract and he was a first team all defender, and didn't regress a bit.

How awesome is that?

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: You've preached the virtue of assets and cap space the entire offseason. Do you think the entire team has bought into that mentality of being an asset? Do you consider TMac a King for life? Also can you speak on how valuable Popeye Jones was as a member to the Kings?

Every player knows his role on the team. We have carefuly picked each player for a reason, and feel that although our starting lineup doesn't scream star power outside of McGrady, this team is still solid and Arenas growing we may have a two headed monster of McGrady+Arenas.

McGrady will be a King for life. He is only 22 and is starting to rise in the ranks as one of the elite SG/SF in the league. He had finally earned 2nd Team All NBA and 2nd Team Defense last season, and hopes to improve.

Popeye did well. During his prime, he was the rock of the team during Camby and McGrady's growth. He was an excellent rebounder, defender, and a passer. Its a shame he has fallen so far, but his age is catching up with him.
