2001 Charlotte Hornets Media Day

Post by NickMalone77 »

Media Day
What's old is new again.

-- Charlotte Observer beat writer, Nick Melon, quietly sitting down with his fingers quietly tapping down on his Apple laptop. The Hornets had their best season ever last year end in Toronto. A franchise best 58 wins. A 7 game series with the Toronto Raptors in the first round of last years playoffs and it ate away at the veterans of this crew just let it simmer. They knew they would have to play better in the following season ahead as it would be all hands on deck. GM Nick Malone shook all the hands of the press that showed up to this team function. David Robinson, Steve Smith, and David Wesley knew what it took to get through the grind of an 82 game regular season. Coming in with a full training camp, Steve Smith was calm and cracking jokes while bonding with the newest Hornet, Popeye Jones. Coming over from the Sacramento Kings, Popeye was relied on as an anchor defensively in the front court playing alongside the likes of Marcus Camby and Tracey McGrady. Popeye looked forward to the new challenge and making his presence known.

-- The Hornets have also allowed Ron Artest to fully mature. Entering his third full season, Artest name was the talk of the league as one of the top defenders for his position already and drawing rave reviews from many team officials not just within Charlotte but league wide. His talent is limitless and can guard almost any position on the court. Artest will be looked on as one of the team leaders this coming season ahead and look to take advantage of the many opportunities in the upcoming season ahead. During this past draft, the Hornets traded up to select the pride of Bosnia, Vladimir Radmanovic. With the ever evolving facets of the game changing in 2001, the shooting touch of this 20 year old marksman given his size will be a crucial element for the success of the Hornets coming off the bench. They also selected late in the first round point guard, Carlos Arroyo out of Puerto Rico. With an international flare, Arroyo is known for his secure ball handling skills and will look to expand his game in his first full season with the club.

-- Charlotte filled out the remainder of the roster buy signing veterans to smaller one year deals that will give opportunities to veterans that may have been passed over by several other clubs that chose not to renew deals. Brent Barry, Tyrone Hill, and Tharon Mayes being some of those crafty veterans that will look to play some crucial minutes when the starters need a rest. While some tough decisions had to be made in terms of sending Rasheed Wallace off to Cleveland, GM Nick Malone feels this team has as much depth and talent that could even be as successful if not more than last years club. Although the opportunity to improve the club will always look for potential deals that can mold the clubs identity and help to give the team a better chance to succeed in the short and long term.

Obviously your team took quite a hit in FA, especially the veterans. Are you still in the short-term mode, or do you feel you may have to start looking long-term.

Obviously the seeding rule had a drastic impact on your team in the playoffs. Did you vote to change the seeding rule and how do you feel about the changes being voted down?

Nick Malone: While Father Time was not exactly ideal to my club this past offseason, I still feel like compared to the rest of the division and conference, I think this team is capable of making the playoffs. We will have a lot of deals coming off the books the next few years and we look at Ron Artest as being the focal point of this club for the foreseeable future. Robinson, Jones, Steve and Wesley all know how to survive the rigors of the regular season even if we have to play at a step slower the season ahead. If you're asking me if I think we will beat the Hawks or Raptors, probably not. But is it possible to be the third or 4th best team in the conference? Absolutely.

Also, when the Atlantic division has a very real chance of finishing with a sub .500 record and being able to lay claim to the 2nd seed, it is very insulting. So you know I voted to change the playoff setting but my vote alone was not enough to change the settings it seems.

Nick Malone: Thanks for attending Bill. If you need a job, I will always take your opinion into consideration making moves if you wanna voice it. I know ESPN can be a cruel slave master that wants to control voices. Anyways, I think both can be highly productive but it'll obviously take time for them to learn the speed of the NBA game compared to where they last played.

GWR: Who would you say is the vocal leader of this squad? Is Artest starting to assert himself more in the locker room?

Will Maukie, BucksNation.com: There are rumors that deals have been in place or close to coming to fruition with multiple teams this off-season, but in the end, you stuck by your guy and deals fell through. If the seasons starts off extremely slow, do attempt to reinitiate talks to shake things up?

Also, with the supposed talks of relocation to New Orleans still making the news, how do you feel fans will respond to you when they show you on Dance Cam during your home opener?

Random Reporter: Are Steve Smith and David Wesley still the primary scoring options, or are you going to expect more from Artest on the offensive side this season?

Nick Malone: While Artest is still growing, I'd say the vocal leader of this club is David Wesley. With his pedigree and career, Wesley has been successful practically wherever he went. David sets the tone and runs the sets we've designed for this team and he is t afraid of calling players out that may respond slower getting back off the court than others. Artest is getting better and better and working as hard as I've ever seen him to take the reigns from Wesley and Artest is finding his own voice, even if he has to sing it to get his point across. He truly is a presence of World Peace for this club in a very Metta way.

Nick Malone: I would be very surprised if this team wasn't capable enough with the talent on the roster and maybe a possible move down the road if we weren't able to play in the playoffs.

Nick Malone: We had quite the busy offseason as I'm sure most other teams do and most of that talk centered around Ron Artest. I won't name the teams but the deals were definitely enticing and thought provoking. I will say that multi time all stars and All League First teamers were being discussed that could have been heading to Charlotte. But in thinking long and hard about that topic, we just felt that while it may have helped our club in the short term, the long term viability of this club wouldn't have been prosperous if we had dealt away the future of our franchise given the room and the length of his talents and the fan base, they deserve a guy like Ron to be their guy like Gugs was for the fans of this team 5-6 years ago.

On the basis of relocation. We love the fans and the city of Charlotte. We have been here for more than a decade now. We have asked multiple times for an updated venue of the Charlotte Coliseum and to give the fans a building they can be proud of that can represent the city and meet up with the supposed league mandates. Those requests were unfortunately denied. I will say that whatever the case, we are committed to providing our fans with the best possible basketball they can see and take pride in watching. I'm excited about what the future holds. I'm excited about the team we have and so should the rest of the NBA.

Nick Malone: There will be plenty of chances and opportunity to score. The ball will be openly passed around and shared and David is a great point guard that I'd argue is Top 10 material. Ron is still very much a raw talent offensively and has taken great strides to get better. Steve Smith is one of the best offensive options this team has ever had and everyone will get a healthy balanced amount of sharing the ball.
