2001 Wizards Chat Room

Post by Xist2Inspire »

"This is pathetic."

Wizards GM J2 sighed and leaned back in his chair as he waited for his internet to load up. Always thinking of new ways to drum up fresh public interest in his sad-sack franchise, he'd asked his players for ideas to spice up Media Day a bit. 20-year-old Darius Miles suggested an online chat room, saying that the Wizards should "embrace the digital future" or something. It sounded like a good idea, and some of the younger players, reporters, and fans seemed excited when it was formally announced. But, there were three important letters that nobody took into account......AOL.

"State-of-the-art facility my ass," J2 grumbled as the computer continued to slowly access the World Wide Web.

"Hah! Finally!" J2 yelled as the 'net let him in, far later than the original planned start time. Logging into the chat room, he saw that some of the players were already logged in and joking around with the reporters and fans. Lamar Odom noticed and posted "Well, look who's finally here," and Darius Miles posted a simple "LOL." J2 shook his head, opened up a window and hit "paste" - fortunately he'd typed up his opener last night.
Gandalfthegreyhaired: Welcome all, to the 2001 Washington Wizards chat room. Before we take questions, I would like to give a quick rundown: Last season was a wreck, the less said about that the better. I kept my promise to make aggresive moves if we found ourselves in the playoff picture early on, but things didn't turn out as we had hoped. Coming into the offseason, our goal was to continue to add talent that fit our new offensive style. Rafer Alston was the first to come aboard, as he was a player we've had our eyes on for a while, and we jumped at the opportunity to acquire him. Alvin Williams, who we acquired last season, wasn't very thrilled with the new direction, and so he returned to Miami in RFA. The Pacers' Anthony Johnson and the Kings' Antonio Daniels did decide to sign our offer sheets, however, we were only able to reach a deal with one, Mr. Johnson. We're very glad to have him, as we feel that he can be the steady hand at point that we as a franchise have lacked since David Wesley was here. Moving on to free agency, Terry Mills, a player we've watched from afar for years, was our top target, and we were proud to announce his signing. We hope that Terry will provide the veteran leadership that our team really needs, and also serve as a mentor to our younger players. We're quite pleased with what we've seen from our guys in training camp, however, we're still determining our rotation. We have ideas, we're just trying to narrow things down at the moment. And now the chat room is officially open, Lamar, Jerry, Anthony, Darius, Rashard, and myself are all available for questions.

NickMelon77: this is an interesting concept. Last season you were drunkenly coherent in a bar and now you've taken to the Internet to spread your message. I like your line of thinking...Anyways, Now that the Celtics have seemingly given up their Tongan death grip of the Atlantic, this gives way to all new possibilities. Your young guns have grown up with Lamar and Rashard taking the next step. The 76ers retooled in a major way as have the Knicks. The Nets and Magic for babies starting for them along with Stacey Augmon. Is this the year the Wizards recapture the Atlantic? How realistic is it to see the Wizards with a .500 and over record this year?

Jean Baptiste Étienne, of La Révolution de Vancouver (Memphis Branch) newspaper, we of course are interested in former Grizzlies, and word out of your camp has been that Olowokandi has seemed more focused and really surprised team officials. Can you tell us about the where your team had him focus, what are your goals for him in season, and what do you see for his future in a contract year?

Dr. Rocker from the Cleveland Rocker: Congratulations on the moves so far. You have some cap room, but you are thin at point and small forward. What are you going to do to address this depth issue? Or will you go another route by riding your starters hard or game planning around your depth issues? Also, your perimeter players seem geared to 3pt shooting, but will you be able to get backups to enable taking consistent advantage of this skill for 48 minutes with your game plan?
There's no "I" in team, but you can find "Eat me" if you push it too far.

Gandalfthegreyhaired: Yes, it's been a long time since we've had a realistic shot at the division title, and even longer since the Celtics could be considered a non-factor. Coach Xist and I feel we're about a year away from being ready to seize control of the Atlantic outright, but we definitely expect to be in the mix this season. Despite last seasons' outcome, we expect to hover around the .500 mark this year.

9Shardsofglass: Jean! No questions for me, homie? What you don't remember me? I know I wasn't there long, but still...

*Michael Olowokandi enters room*

Iwantkandi: Greetings all. This offseason has been one of deep meditation and discovery for me. Two seasons ago, when I first came to Washington, I had an opportunity to speak with Hakeem Olajuwon before he left for Vancouver, and I talked further with Yinka Dare before he too was traded. Both expressed their desire to see another African-born center succeed in the NBA, and both saw such potential in me. I spend much time with them this offseason, and Hakeem in particular, working on my defensive skills and learning how to use my size both forcefully and effectively. I hope that this season I can honor both Hakeem in his twilight NBA years, Yinka, and all of Africa with my play this season.

Gandalfthegreyhaired: With so many of our players coming up for new deals soon, this is a pivotal season for many. Michael's already shown a strong desire to succeed and become a bigger part of this team during training camp, and we're all hoping to see him continue to grow in a Wizards jersey this season and beyond.

DMbarelylegal: I think I got some of this next question. Our current official listings may make us look thin at certain positions, but one thing we stress around here is versatility. Most of us have played multiple positions since high school, we're all capable of switching gears at a moment's notice, ya dig? I'm basically a swingman, Odom can play just about anywhere, and Stack's played SF most of his career. I'd say we're pretty good there.

Gandalfthegreyhaired: To build on your question Mr. Rocker, yes, we will focus on the 3-point shot, and we've already taken steps to add depth. They haven't arrived in camp yet, but we've recently just signed Wang Zhizhi, Chris Robinson, Walter McCarty, and Shammond Williams. All are able to give our key guys rest while also maintaining our 3-point pace. With their signings, we will be at least 3 deep at every position.

With the Celtics trading Alonzo Mourning away to the Supersonics and the Heat openly shopping Gary Payton, most think you can make a move for the Atlantic division crown... but who do you think the favorites for the Atlantic should be this year?

Also, can you give us some insight as to how much you expect Wang to impact the team this year?

Gandalfthegreyhaired: In my mind there's only one team who should be consided the favorite to take the division title this season: Miami. Gary Payton has carried this team to contention year after year, and you'd have to imagine that with the Celtics apparently out of it, the team that's been nipping at their heels for years would be the team to beat. Every other team in the division, including ourselves, has a question mark, and are trying to find an identity or establish a new one. Meanwhile, Miami's had theirs for a long time. Until proven otherwise or Payton is indeed traded, Miami should be considered the favorites.

Stacked42: Haha, looks like we have a troll in the house!

Gandalfthegreyhaired: Wonderful. Anyway, while looking for more bigs to back up Michael, we came across Wang and decided to sign him. As you know, the NBA is expanding worldwide, and with the African and European pipelines already tapped - with mixed results, might I add - we wanted to get a head start on the Asian scene. We're not expecting him to play a huge role, but we are interested in seeing how he progresses in practice during the offseason. We're already fairly impressed by his basic, yet versatile offensive skillset.

Will Maukie, BucksNation.com: It is well documented that Lamar Odom has been a top-name in trade talks this off-season. Is there any truth to the rumors? Has this impacted Odom in any way? Many sources have reported how sensitive he can be when tied to trade talks.

Sweettooth8: Yeah, I'll admit it, trade rumors make me nervous, I hate them. Thankfully, J2's helped a lot, he's totally transparent. He told me on the phone the night I was drafted; "Look, you're gonna hear a lot of things for years to come, but that's because a lot of people believe in your talent. We believe in your talent more than anyone else, and that's why we drafted you. You'll be a Wizard for as long as you want to be." He's pretty much stuck by that ever since, whenever rumors pop up, he's called me to either say "don't worry about it, they're lying," or "don't worry about it, you're not going anywhere."

Gandalfthegreyhaired: I will say that I've had to do much more of the latter than the former.

With Rashard Lewis jumping up 5 points per game last year from the year before, what sort of increases to his game do you expect from your young small forward?

9Shardsofglass: I know I can score, that's no problem for me. What I want to be able to do this season is do things a little bit more efficiently, ya know? As far as I'm concerned, every open shot I take should go in.

Do you think this team as currently constructed can dethrone the Hawks? You have talent at all positions and the versatility to rival nearly any team in the league, I believe.

DMbarelylegal: ........

Iwantkandi: :O

9Shardsofglass: Wat

AJPG: I'm not trying to guard Penny. You can do it Lamar.

Stacked42: You can take Spree too while you're at it dawg

Sweettooth8: Wow, way to throw me under the bus guys. Thanks. : -(

Gandalfthegreyhaired: ...while we definitely appreciate the compliment, these are the Hawks we're talking about, last season's champions and this season's favorites. We're going to need some time in the cooker before we can safely consider ourselves to be on that level. For what it's worth, we do believe that we can compete against anyone, we believe in our talent. But we also know that aside from Jerry, we're a team filled to the brim with unproven players. That's why we made Terry Mills our top priority in FA, not only does he boost our overall versatility, but he also has the championship experience that our team can use, and the winning attitude that we need to develop in order to reach Atlanta's level. But until we develop that...

Sweettooth8: ...seriously guys, why do I have to guard Penny?

Stacked42: Coltsguy, homie, don't you know me? You know I'm still a franchise player.

Sweettooth8: If the trade rumors J2's told me about are correct, I guess it's me.

9Shardsofglass: Hey what am I, chopped liver? I'm like, the second-best scorer on this team!

AJPG: That's nice, but who's giving you the ball? That'd be me.

Iwantkandi: Ah, but who will be cleaning up all the bricks you 4 will toss up?

DMbarelylegal: C'mon guys, we all know it's me.

Sweettooth8: .........

Iwantkandi: ..........

AJPG: ...I'm sorry, I'm new. Who are you again?

9Shardsofglass: Ha!

Gandalfthegreyhaired: .........Well as you can see, there are many differing opinions. I'll set the record straight, though: We're a team. If we're to make the playoffs this season, it's gonna take every last person in the rotation to do their job. We're nowhere near as overwhelmingly talented or experienced to survive without teamwork. Now if you're talking about trade value, that's a different story, one that - honestly - depends on what the rest of the league thinks their value is. But as for importance to the team? We're ggonnaneed every last one of them to step up big-time.

Not too long ago, a near riot almost happened after one of your offseasons. What have you learned since and how good does it feel looking at the roster you have compared to those difficult times?

Sports Guy Bill Simmons here, Odom and Lewis are 2 of the more versatile players in the league. What's it like trying to put a gameplan together with both of them on the court? Do you like getting creative with that or sometimes wish for more of a traditional lineup?

Gandalfthegreyhaired: It's really nice to look forward to competing for the playoffs rather than the #1 for a change. I'm not sure I've learned all that much, other than TC is a muthafu-

DMbarelylegal: SHUT YO MOUTH!

Gandalfthegreyhaired: Har har. Anyway, I can definitely say that I've learned how to assess talent better now. Wait...you're not talking about the guy who was a the GM before me, are you? The one who couldn't win with a team of Pippen, Nick Anderson, Rodman, and Wayman Tisdale? 'Cuz all I learned from him is not to do anything he did.

Sportsguy, it's really tough at times, but I love the challenge. There's nothing better than having multiple guys on your roster capable of filling different roles. In a way - despite the challenge - it actually makes things easier, because you have so many options that quickly adjusting becomes a breeze. I know picking up these two over your own Steve Francis was rather controversial, but I honestly love what they bring and wouldn't change a thing. Heck, give me an entire team of versatile guys like them.
