K100, 76ers.

Not a lot of splash this season, but the patient (and sometimes head-scratching to us watching) approach taken has really started to pay off big time for these 76ers. Even after Toppin got nicked in TC, he just put more into him in training and got him back up. A deadline deal for Udoka could end up being key for him as well to cover the last major weakness the team might have had. He also fought the urge to trade guys away in the off-season, which also was obviously a smart move.

Like last season's GMOY winner, I'm down to reward consistency.

I'm nominating the reigning champion: xist2inspire

Having a player like Quintin Kidd (at his peak) on your team affords you to do a lot of things. The most important of this is balancing success in the present with care for the future.

Through 11 sims, the Wiz are on top of the Johnson Division, but they were able to get under the apron. They were able to get out of Shareef O'Neal's large contract and net Paul Cassel, a win-now player who's still finishing off his rookie contract. They were able to upgrade Cuomo to a younger Norrin Radd on a reasonable contract for a couple of Wiz picks...which historically don't tend to stay with the Wizards anyway.

They were also able to retain Winston Kelly on a great cost-controlled contract, gain Renato Mosher for 10mm a year, and train guys like Kendall Liberty and Ali Assad to have usable young depth.

Finally, outside of his team, xist has contributed thoughtful, entertaining media entries to make the league more interesting for everyone.

AngryBanana - Oklahoma City Thunder

I'll nominate a dark horse this season. AB has been rebuilding for a seasons now and so far has acquired some nice building blocks to complement his two rookie studs Zaire Wade and Daniel Oturu. The beginning of this season looked like a disaster when OKC stumbled out of the gate, but AB stayed aggressive and scoured the trade blocks to get more talent once he realized he was still in the Omega playoff picture. For a mere 15 points, he transformed his backcourt bringing in familiar faces in Pete Maravich and Clifton Cage while also taking a chance on the talented journeyman, Ronald Haile from Utah. He has played .500 sim league ball since the All-Star Break and remains only 2 games back of the #7 seed with one sim to go. If Bulter and Haile exercise their player options next season, this is one of those teams that will make the jump from rebuilding to competing very soon.

Admittedly, I almost always disagree with moves this GM makes, but I think a GM who sits 1.5 games out of the best record of the league with only the 6th largest payroll deserves some recognition. NickMalone - here's your GMOY nomination. Sure, the knock on Nick might be 'well he lucked into two former Suns purples'. Firstly, navigating your own cap to ensure you have max money at FA time is certainly a factor in signing another team's max player. Secondly, the Suns HAD both of these guys. You don't have to look to far to see them, or last year's Pacers, as cautionary tales of obtaining 2 purples, putting your feet up, and assuming you're going to wreck the league. In a 26-team league, you can't do that, and Nick didn't do that. He surrounded these guys with really good complimentary pieces, doesn't have ANY bad contracts on his books, has all his future picks after this year, and has a really fun playoff roster in terms of being able to matchup against different kinds of teams. All 5 positions can score, rebound, and play defense. Just a really solid build along with flexibility in the upcoming offseason as well.

So, well done, Nick. You're well deserving of this award this year.

NOLa. Kings.

I was talked out of having pity for the Kings by the commish and rightfully so. Count it: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 players 25 or under with blue if not purple potential. And he doesn't need to think about maxing any of their contracts for at least another season or two, ready and able to take on someone else's not so great contract and avoid the tax man.

Look, the record only tells so much. It was a quick pivot out of the gate for not meeting expectations, and while we like to reward successful GMs the year they're contending, think about the long game Xist has played (another strong GMOY contender). NOLa has created many options for himself and will be a hard out for anyone in the seasons to come, and a lot of the hard work for that happened in S48.
Somehow I manage.

So last year I was nominated due to consistency, and it's for that reason that I'm nominating Quail for GMOY. Well, there is one more reason...restraint. Look, we all know Quail loves to wheel and deal, "Thou shalt expect a Quail trade" is practically a SLOE law at this point. However, and despite ample opportunity, Quail's stayed put. He even swallowed the Pastor pill in RFA. For once, Quail buckled down and showed what he can do when he focuses solely on what he has...and what he's done is give his team a shot at the best record in the league with a sim left to go. I think that's GMOY-worthy.

Don’t mind if I do... Since Ryan nominated me, he gets my nomination for GMOY. Given the amount of talent Ryan has at his disposal, he could’ve easily traded Sabo and RJ Barrett away for younger assets or draft picks but stuck to his guns and held firm. Made a major trade with Roberto dealing away John Stoll to get back Sam Adams and Zeke Nanji who looks like a promising prospect. The signings of Bynum and Lopez to great one year contracts in the offseason helped to tie up his wings with RJ Barrett. Even after TC decimated him, he could’ve packed it in but instead, he’s 30 games over .500 and within striking distance of the Wizards and a solid chance to come out of the Alpha Conference for the next when everyone thought the defending champs were going to run away with the conference.

I’ll nominate JNR. I’m going to be short and sweet. He has a very solid team, that has been built over time with good scouting. He was a game away from winning his division. If you need more reason, go tune into Horns and Fangs where they talk about it some.
