Position Ranking UFAs

Post by logpmess »

With UFA round 1 later today, I’m looking at the top players at each position. I am only considering the blue level players or higher. I am looking at offense, defense, and athleticism for the position. I am only considering players for the positions they have listed on the draft file. I rated each player based on expected contributions for just the upcoming season.

C: Jaren Jackson, Jr.
Runner Up: Miguel Thomas
3rd Place: Derick Hunter

At 31, Jaren Jackson, Jr is past his prime. He is on the beginning parts of a decline is his ability. Don’t let that fool you. He still has a lot in the tank. His 100 in Inside scoring could make him the focal point offensively on a team. Now, factor in his defense. He has the prototypical attributes a team wants from a center: post defense (83) and blocks (79). It doesn’t stop there though. JJJ has better than average for a center perimeter defense and steals. The last thing that you look for in a big is rebounding ability. JJJ is a top rebounder as evidenced in his double digit production last year. His quickness could be higher, but that attribute is less important for a center.

Ups: Rebounding, All around defense, Inside scoring
Downs: Quickness, age, passing ability

PF: Frederic Hughes
Runner Up: Glen Sabo
3rd Place: Modestine Degrimonpon

Frederic Hughes has a lot of versatility. He has the quickness to slide over to the small forward position on the court, and he has the strength to body up to some centers in our league. With better than average defensive ability both down low and on the perimeter, Hughes is a matchup nightmare at the power forward position on the court. He, also, has the ability to pull in some boards on both sides of the court. His offensive game leaves something to be desired. Although he is a scorer on the inside, his inability to stretch a defense with jump shooting makes him a one trick pony offensively. Frederic is not a good free throw shooter, which could be a liability at the end of games.

Ups: Versatility, Quickness
Downs: Shooting, Free throws

SF: RJ Barrett
Runner Up: Ben Franklin
3rd Place: Colby Lopez

Although aging, RJ Barrett is still a great player. His combination of strength and speed alone makes him a force to be reckoned with. His offensive skills are really good with a 100 in 3PS. However, he isn’t a one side of the court player. He has top level post defense and block ratings. With rebounding and perimeter defense in the B range, he is the total package. The biggest downfall about RJ is his age. The training camp gods like to hit people about this age. RJ has enough upside that even a significant hit would still keep him as a great player. The ball does seem to stop in his hands when he touches it since he does not have great passing skills.

Ups: Defensive versatility, Quickness, three point shooting
Downs: Passing, Jump abilities, age

SG: Chris Ridley
Runner Up: Leonard Washington
3rd Place: Clifford Paugh

When looking for a shooting guard, Chris Ridley has what you are looking for now. The most intriguing part of Ridley is that he still has room to grow. Just entering his prime at 27, Chris has attributes in the 90s for both jump shooting and three point shooting. If he matches up on someone smaller, he still has skills on the inside. His defense can shut down another guard. A smaller guard won’t be able to get by his length and his quick hands will cause a lot of steals. His athleticism is top notch in all categories and he has good passing and defensive rebounding. His weakness is clearly his post defense. His inability to defend or block down low is a problem. At the end of the day, his age and upside far outweigh his shortcomings.

Ups: Offense, Perimeter D, Athleticism
Downs: Handles, Post D, Blocks

PG: Odell Rasberry
Runner Up: Bryce Dejean-Jones
3rd Place: N/A

Odell Rasberry is one of two point guards that fall within the criteria for this article. He is a player entering his prime. He has outstanding athleticism and decent size. He can guard the opposing team’s perimeter players as well as dribble and distribute the ball. All of these things are great for a point guard to build around. He is really good at three point shooting and free throws, but that is about it. He isn’t a top scoring option on a team; however, at age 27, he is the top prospect for this position.

Ups: Athleticism, Distributing the ball, perimeter defense
Downs: Scoring, Post defense

All of these assessments are pre-training camp. Some were very difficult to choose between the three listed. At the end of the day, all of these players are going to be big contributors to a team this season.
