S47 Clip City Presser

Post by MexicanMamba »

We came, we saw, we got beat in the 1st Round.

I think that about sums up what the Clippers did last season.  In season 1 of post-championship competition, we just sort of existed.  Honestly, that was pretty much what my goal was.  I made sure to slash my payroll so that I could reset my tax and win enough games so that I could get a few points in my bank.  Mission accomplished.  I got roughed up in the playoffs by the Jazz and their fantastic backcourt and that I can live with.

So, what are expectations for this season? I am having difficulty deciphering exactly what my goals are.  A big part of me would be excited about the challenges that a youthful rebuild would bring (everyone is on the block, just in case this comes to fruition) and then there’s another part of me that sees the league pretty open and that perhaps I should ride out Sabo’s contract season and see if I couldn’t sneak another title out of it after a bit more in-season tweaking.

I really like Terry Sterner and I am planning to drop some time, points, effort in to seeing what I can make out of him so keeping him in RFA was good times, especially for a contract that I found very reasonable.  Bringing Jaren Jackson Jr. back to help Sabo was a positive, as was winning Clifton Cage in UFA to round out my starting 5.  Other new faces are Phil Brooks, Ash Ketchum, Charlie Porter, DeAndre Ayton and 1st rounder (barely) Jeffry Woosley.  I find this team to be quite solid and relatively deep.  I know we can win games this season.  How many and how far that can take me?  I don’t know but maybe I will have a better grasp on that after a couple of sims.

We’ll see.  But until then, let me take some questions.

Terry Sterner faced a wide range of PGs in his first full season as the Clippers' floor general this preseason, ranging on a scale of WTF (Arturs Zagars), to average (Norrin Radd, Richard Hunt, Cassius Winston, and Lugentz Dort), to future All-League (Artur Lujuan/Jerald Alexander from NY)

How would rate Sterner's progress so far? Do you think he is the face of the franchise for the Clippers once Sabo's reign of terror ends?

Sterner is still very much a work in progress. Right now he's a SG that I am working to become a PG. He made a few good jumps in some key areas, but they're definitely SG areas like INS and PRD which aren't far off from elite levels as a 24 year old. I am going to work with him closely in the coming seasons however to sharpen up his ball handling, passing abilities. As of now, I think he could become a Stoll-like scoring dynamo at the PG position.

I still don't know if he's THE face. I will always look to add players that are better than who already exists. However, I truly believe he can be a star on a championship team.

Random Reporter: Are there any offseason acquisitions who you are particularly excited to have and hope that they'll play a key role?

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: You traded Chris Pallies for Phil Brooks in the offseason, but we didn't see much of Brooks in preseason games. What type of role do you expect him to play in the regular season?

Honestly, not in particular. I know what Jaren Jackson can do since he's been here before. Brooks is a longtime vet so we kind of know where he stands. Clifton Cage could be the answer. I am intrigued by how he helps to elevate my defense now that all 5 of my starters are high level defenders.

As things stand right now, Brooks is going to be a primary back-up at 3 different positions (PG, SG, SF). Hes old and slow but he does a lot of things well and high basketball IQ is always a positive.

Is this the year that Glen Sabo finally moves on? If so, hit me up; I got a great player for you

Zeke Nnaji has a lot of good potential. Do you see him as the focal point for the future, or do you think he will be better as a complementary player?

As of this moment I dont think I can count on him being the focal point of the team until he can stay on the court for longer than 3 minutes at a time due to his stamina. However, he certainly can develop into a player that plays a certain role and does it very well.

What kind of outcome do you anticipate from Sim 1? Who is your toughest opponent and how do you plan to beat them?
Somehow I manage.

1. Pain.
2. The basketball gods.
3. Scoring more points.
