S46 Thunder Pre-Season Presser

Post by AngryBanana »

**Angrybanana approaches the stand, dressed very out of sorts. He is wearing a white rush t-shirt, that appears to be tattered in the back and have burn marks all over it, blue jean shorts that are clearly too tight for him (he probably got them from his wife’s dresser) and one teva sandal. It appears that his current fashion statement is representative of how he is currently guiding the Thunder as an organization... confused and tattered.**

Last year was a new one to me. I was finally past my first build, trading away my core pieces and the guy that started everything in Pistol Pete. So I was somewhat invigorated at what laid ahead in a rebuild. So I decided this year was going to be a year where I can just sign some people, trade them away and then go on cruise control with no hope of making the playoffs. As I said I traded most of my team for younger assets or picks and even traded Clay Waters for a guy who I thought could get me more value in Smallwood. I went further into rebuild with drafting Zargas. Well, everything seemed to fall in place on my side to be a bad team, but then my conference and division had other plans. I was contending for most of the year. So much so, I decided to flip the switch and trade for Ernest Long in an attempt to solidify my playoff chances.... that didn’t happen.

Going into the offseason this year I had loads of cash and not much prospects on the books and a pistons pick that turned into a non lottery pick. I had no idea of how to proceed. With RFA, I decided to throw some money at the big players and try to make some competitive offers, thinking everyone would match. I was able to land Scot Bulter, which was unexpected. This lead me to UFA, where I decided to give Long a less than max deal, based on having Bulter and not wanting to have too much of my cap on a similar player but older, especially when I’m not try to compete. I struck out pretty much across the board except for acquiring John Blakemore, who I think will actually pan out to be a pretty good player. Round two I decided to try to fill my cabinet with a bunch of older players, who I can try to move for assets after 60 days (Y’ALL HIT ME UP!)

Tc went about as even as I expected, where the older guys dropped. I was more interested in my young talents (Smallwood,Zargas,Blakemore, and Bulter) they all developed and I think did well, so that’s a plus. I think this season will be a season where we see the older players at first and the me offering the younger guys chances as the season goes on.

No idea what my starting 5 is yet. Maybe:
Bulter
AC Williams
Clemente Torres
Edmunds
Blakemore

As you start to develop an identity for the Thunder post-Pistol Pete do you plan to try and shake things up and proceed with a different type of team build? Signing Bulter to a near max deal in RFA may indicate starting from the inside-out. Do you agree?

GWR: Bulter's only real weakness seems to be rim protection. Do you have any plans to mitigate that weakness via scheme or roster moves?

Yeah, so the last build was very much outside in. I think this one is just let’s see what happens more than a linear approach.

I’m actually hoping that he develops to where that will not even be a weakness for him. But it would more than likely start with scheme, since I do not have a long term answer in the way of a player to compliment him.

Is there anyone on your roster right now who you think is worth building a team around?

As far as a core to build around, I am really impressed with how Blakemore and Bulter did in the pre-season. Other than those two I like Zargas a lot as he is young and has a lot of potential. However, I think when it comes to having a #1, I do not know if anyone is truly that on my team. But hey, time will tell.

To followup on this, does Zagars' "unhappy" status have an impact on how you judge his potential as a building block?

In making some RFA offers where you expected GM's to match, what was the strategy here? Driving costs to just where GMs would pay more to keep their guy?
Somehow I manage.

I have seen his unhappiness since last season. I know that I have a few years left on his deal, to where once he develops I can move him into a larger role and make him more happy. I am actually hoping that by the end of the year, he gets some serious minutes to see how he plays.

 All the offers I sent were sent with the idea that these players would make my team better. I assumed that most teams would match because of their status as really good players. Bulter was included in that list. I am happy to have him as a part of the Thunder organization.

You don't seem to ever embrace the tank like other GMs, what is the reason for this?

I’m trying to embrace the tank life. My philosophy is to field a team of players playing well who can be shipped in the first half, while having an ok to bad record, then selling them all off to then field a team that is truly bad. That was last years intent until I was in the 8th seed and realized I had a chance at some more points. I’m set up this year though to make a choice again next year, given that about 80% of my cap is on one year deals.
