Brian Windhorst's "Off-Season In Review"

Post by Brian Windhorst »

Hey everyone! I'm Brian Windhorst and I'll be giving an off-season team by team analysis. I know that the off-season is far from over but 95% of the heavy hitters in Free Agency are accounted for and most of the teams are pretty set. If anything major happens I'll update my analysis as it happens. Before I get started though I want to shed light on a player I've been spending LOTS of time with. I basically sleep at his house. His name is LeBron James. He is amazing. Trust me I know. We're best buds. Write it down, he will be a great NBA talent. He did this interview the other night:

Image

I braided his hair right after that. Yup we are that tight. Ok anyways, on to the off-season review. I'll do one team from each division every post. I'll try to complete the entire league in the next few days. I hope you enjoy!!

Braid it while you can, bubba.
There's no "I" in team, but you can find "Eat me" if you push it too far.

There were rumblings for some time about the Boston Celtics' big reset that was coming. Everyone knew Zo was a free agent, yet no-one truly knew if Conroy, the GM of the Celtics, would truly pull the trigger and let his prized player slip away. We are talking about FIVE....YES FIVE Finals appearances and TWO Championships. Sure Sure Zo is 31, but most would agree that he still has 3-4 more dominant seasons left in his tank even with his yearly regressions. Problem about a Celtics rebuild starting this season was that he didn't hold his own draft pick. Well he fixed that and answered those questions when he traded 26 yr old Dickerson away to the Sonics in return for his 02 1st. Dickerson was an expiring RFA, and if you're starting a rebuild you don't really want to start it off by overpaying a B-C list player. Soon after this move, the rest of the dominoes started to fall. We saw Christie shipped to the Blazers for cap holder Erick Strickland, and 2 1st round draft picks that definitely have some potential. Then as most expected he re-signed Zo and had a sign-and-trade deal done. The Sonics landed Zo and in return they sent Conroy 2 more 1st rounders and a young y/g Center. I don't expect Brandon to be moved considering that 12 mil price tag. He's an expiring and won't really add wins to this Celtics roster anyway. The Celtics rebuild is off to a flying start. This team will build around star guard Steve Francis and hope to land another star in the draft like Yao or Amare'. I'd have to say that gm Conroy's plan to rebuild is going just as expected. Now all that's left is to pray to the SimBalls(lotto)!!

What is there really to say about the defending PBSL Champions?? They were dominant all season last year and most thought they were the overwhelming favorite to win it all. They had no real weaknesses. I didn't expect too many moves to be made in the off-season besides maybe attempting to get that cap under control a bit. GM Wignosy was able to sell McInnis and his 3.5 mil to the Cavs which saved a little. But when you are this much over the cap and start hitting the repeater tax penalties, every dollar shaved counts. They did lose Jon Barry in Free Agency to the Clippers. That will hit them a bit but expect someone else on that loaded roster to pick up the slack. The Hawks are primed and ready to take yet another dominant shot at the Championship. And after last season....It's theirs to lose.

This team is good. It's very good. But it'll NEVER be as good as it was with Penny. I don't want to beat a dead horse but I can't help it. The GM of the Mavericks were handed a back-to-back championship team. Sure there's a learning curve, but you just don't trade a once-in-a-simtime talent like Penny. And just like Penny, I'll move on. FearTheBrow struck out completely in Round 1 of Free Agency. This team has no true Center which always worries me with any team. There's a few guys that could slide into that spot but no long term solutions currently on the roster. They will have to hope to land one of the older, declining Centers who are still available. This team can win the Midwest again. But until the GM shows me that they have a handle on playoff gameplanning, I can't call them a contender. They've had 3 full seasons at the helm. Given a pre-made contender and haven't made it past the second round all while having great seedings. This team will have another great regular season. They need to prove something in the playoffs before ANY team will ever "fear" fearthebrow.

As long as Shawn Kemp is himself and is on the Warriors..this team will be a contender. At 31, he will definitely start regressing every season. Although, players like Kemp and Zo are so talented that even at 35 they will still be better than most of the players at their position. The team fielded last year was obviously not as talented as years past but GM BowToTheBill still managed to make noise in the playoffs. He came in as the #7 seed and upset the Mavs, Griz, and T-Wolves to get to the Finals. Only of course to run into heavy favorite Atlanta Hawks and lose in 5. This GM is seasoned and always a threat no matter the regular season record. The entire Warriors squad was on expiring contracts besides Kemp and Snow. They came into Round 1 of Free Agency and made waves as they snatched up defensive stalwarts, Bruce Bowen and Bryon Russell. I'm not sure where the scoring will come from but this team will be scary on the defensive side. Look for them to try and find some offense with their remaining 4 mil. I think they will end up somewhere around 3rd again in this fierce Pacific division, but as always, look out come playoff time.

I'm not sure if the Nets have ever truly rebuilt or truly contended, but they do compete. Now most of the time no-one knows what direction GM RPF is headed. Sometimes it feels like he throws shit(his players) on the wall to see what sticks. After they traded star player Isaiah Rider last season it seemed he was leaning towards a rebuild. He had a pretty solid draft day by grabbing what I thought was some good value picks in Wallace and Tinsley at #10 and #11. But just when you think he's on his way to a rebuild he goes and signs Dale Davis in Free Agency. Sad thing is that this team as currently constructed could actually win this division. This may be the worst Atlantic division ever. A .500 team may win this thing. So with that being said, I don't absolutely hate him trying to compete. If day 60 comes around and it's a disaster, he can always go all in on the rebuild with many young pieces to build around. He is still missing that starpower that Rider gave him. He'll need to find that in the next few years if he ever wants to contend.

Not sure what to say about the Bulls. They did not have their draft pick last season and they managed to squeeze into the playoffs. They were one of the 7 teams in the Central who made the playoffs. Pippen retired and Tim Thomas was a RFA. They ended up matching a max deal submitted by the Lakers. They then made a good move to shed Hardaway and Dampier's lengthy contracts in return for Glen Rice and Lafrentz's expirings. Not to mention that in a starter's role, Rice can still nearly put up 20 ppg. And GM PrepP will need all the help it can get as he doesn't have his own pick again this year. Considering how weak the East and the Atlantic are again I see this Bulls team in the playoffs once again. Though, in order to make some noise it'll have to get through the Hawks or the Raptors probably in round one. So.....Good luck with that!!!

The moves that's been made in Denver this off-season....where do I start? This team missed the playoffs by 5 games last post-season. With Bradley and Rider becoming UFAs the Nuggets had many directions it could go and lots of cap to play with. To help that even further, GM thesyndicate traded Augmon to the Magic. They don't have this year's draft pick so they went for it in Round 1 of Free Agency. They definitely hit some home runs. They signed Dee Brown, Cedric Ceballos, and re-signed Isaiah Rider. The deals they got C-Balls and Rider on are steals. But here's the big problem I see. As good as those player are and as talented as that back court will be, the front court is non-existent. Where will the rebounding come from? Cedric is the most experienced rebounder on the team. They are 8 mil in the hole so it's not like they will be able to find a min level player to come in and shore up their front court. They have assets and they definitely have a GM that can make some moves, so expect them to solve this problem in a trape or two. This team will make the playoffs, but until I see a front court, I can't see a contender.

Sometimes teams can do too much by not doing enough. You have to go back pretty far to find the last big trade the Clippers have made. Which isn't horrible, but when a team slowly starts to run out of assets and get worse and worse, it's time to make a hard decision. That decision should have come this season. Rebuild and start from scratch. I have word that GM aburns received some pretty good offers for Van Exel over the last few weeks. All were declined. This is not a playoff team. They still have 8 mil left in salary but there isn't any difference making players left. They will have to settle for old declining bigs to fill the front court and as I stated about the Nuggets, without a front court in the West, you're dead meat. The Clips have all their draft picks. Make the right call and sell the assets after teams strike out in FA. It's the only move to make.

I know I’m supposed to love the Heat no matter what. But I unfortunately have some harsh words for GM LogPMess. This team is two years past it’s rebuild prime. When Jim left the building, “The Glove” should have been right behind him. That was once again the only move to make. But it wasn’t made and now the Heat are stuck with an aging Payton and THREE more years of a HUGE salary. I know he was being shopped a bit, but he remains a Heat and I have a feeling he’ll be living it up in South Beach for 3 more years. If you’re in town check Gary out, ALL drinks, girls, and drugs will be on him. A few moves were made to bring in some younger guys, but until this team sells the farm and goes full rebuild mode, it will float around being the 8th-12th best team in the East.

IF THIS DESCRIBES YOU THEN IT’S FOR YOU:
I want to take this moment to quickly point something out. So far I’ve noticed a trend in teams refusing to “rebuild” or “tank”. The word tank has been vilified so much in this league, some GMs refuse to take actions they deem as “tanking”. You are only hurting yourself. Selling valuable assets to gain youth and future draft picks is a completely logical way to rebuild a team. And sometimes the only way. There is a handful of teams who have drifted along the mediocre line for a decade now. It’s kinda sad to be honest. Put your pride aside and do what’s right for your sim fans. If you could be fired, you’d have been without a job. And this isn’t even towards the Heat in particular. They had 2 great players for a long time, but when it’s time to move on, a GM had to recognize that.

I won’t go into previous years with the Cavs. There was a new GM who took over in the offseason and he went straight to town on a team reset. For the most part, 42 PhD has done well for being a fresh GM. But as he will learn, GMs will be quick to take advantage of the new guy. In this case it was Knicks GM SnugLife. He fleeced the Cavs for Eddie Jones in a trade that landed the most 2nd round picks ever in a single trade. Unfortunately for 42, 2nd round picks are more worthless than the Hawks salary cap manager. I also didn’t like how easily the Cavs gave away some of his young rookies like Dalembert. Besides the much bigger haul he should have gotten for Jones, none of these moves are crippling and his rebuild will carry on. For future reference though, I would suggest that as a new GM you ask for veteran GMs input for at least the first few seasons. Trading in sim league takes some time before you truly understand player values. Even though at this point player values are going to complete shit.

The Rockets are awful. The Rockets have been awful. Rockets GM 78 used to be a respected GM going back to the PR sim league. He hit the jackpot and landed the Big Diesel and had a handful of playoff appearances that all ended in the 1st or 2nd round. Shaq was finally shipped off for some assets and peanuts. He is currently on Year 17 of his rebuild with no end in sight. He said his expectations were to win around 35 games this season. With expectations like that , WHO NEEDS EXPECTATIONS! He once again has a very talented center in Big Z, but I’m afraid that by the time the Rockets are ready to compete Big Z may have retired. Good luck in IJBL 78!

Nothing real flashy out of the Lakers camp this off-season. But nothing flashy was needed. When you win any division in the Western conference, your team is pretty decent. Although he was upset by the Timberwolves and his post-season was halted abruptly, he is poised for another title run. Look for Hughes to take that leap and KG to get even better. Yes even BETTER. Not a good thing for the rest of the league. The West is loaded once more and the Pacific is especially scary. Lakers WILL make the playoffs which is all that matters. They play for the post-season and after last year’s early exit they’ll be looking to destroy any team in their way.

Fair take on the Cavs. The best deal actually offered for Jones was accepted. Waiting to trade may have netted more immediate value, and that is perhaps the biggest potential error, but overall, the Cavs are ahead of schedule in their rebuild, but, and make no mistake about it, this team is not competing this season or next. This team is doing something new, it seems. Right now, we are still debuilding. The entire roster is continually for sale this season and next. Book it.

I like how you've come in and decided to make this team yours. Whatever the value, there's something to be said for instilling your identity onto a team you take over.
