Lakers 2032-2033 Preseason Press Conference

Post by greepleairport »

Greeple steps up to the podium wearing a tshirt with an airplane on it and Lakers workout pants.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen! I hate things sometimes! I look forward to speaking with you all!

When garbageman seemed open to releasing Wanderlei Silva, my new best friend, body guard, and destroyer of worlds, I just said "thank you."

Thank you, garbageman. To Gary Loredo, do better. garbageman seems ready to take care of you, so you better treat him better than you treated me or you better believe that rookie option gets declined. Releasing Micheal Williams hurt a bit more, having been crucial to our success last year, but Wanderlei is the guy I've eyed for some time. The guy I want to take to dinner. Maybe a movie. Definitely ice cream!

For the next big move we unloaded almost everything else that made us great in JR Johnson, Wyatt Battle finishing his rookie contract, Ronald Jackson (come on, his contract is not HIS fault) and a pick. JR was the fire that brought excitement back to LA three years ago, but in his more veteran years he's earned some time to suntan with Mickey in his off days (Disney Land was just too far from Staples Center!). But we gained Ernie Acuna. Again, everything we wanted and needed for a strong backcourt. A brilliant shooter, scorer and passer, he can hussle back on defense and be effective there too. He'll pair well with Leiker, who also looks to have his best year yet.

Greeple hiccups and burps directly into the microphone. It reverberated from deep within his gut.

You know, am I not just repeating myself? Did anyone hear me lambast Mamba a few days ago? That was practically a preseason presser with extra sass. What didn't I talk about? What needs discussing?

Delmar. Lopez.

I'm so excited to see what you can do - but you're not doing it yet. Not that I'm disappointed, we're not contenders just yet, I mean

YES WE ARE

*coughs* I mean we still have some holes-

WE ARE A MASS OF AXES CHOPPING UP THE PBSL

ah...ah...AHH-CHOOO!!!!

God, what is happening? Anyway, he - Delmar - may or may not put up some numbers this year, but we're pleased with his progress overall. He can still barely do two laps in the pool before he pukes from exhaustion but we're working on it.

We picked up two championship players, still in their prime, ready to teach our young men like Lopez and Leiker what it's like at the top, and Sherrill may get a little taste of glory before Scot Bulter takes over, too. Lakers Lakers Lakers.

Now I think I made myself clear that happiness is my number one

Greeple leaves the podium, rips off his Lakers pants and straddles them, pulling them back and forth, screaming at the top of his lungs. He then windmills his pants above his head saying helicopters land at airports sometimes too, into the microphone, then runs in circles around the podium, picks up a chair and throws it across the room and returns to the podium.

NOLa. puts his pants back on.

The Lakers were big move makers this offseason by taking on Silva and Acuna then subsequently maxing Leiker. Was the emergence of Joe Sherrill and the continuing development of rising star Lopez the biggest reason you went all in, or was it something else such as the contraction division realignment?

GWR: The mix of veterans and youth is interesting. Which do you think is more likely this season -- trading youth for a win now push or trading veterans to capitalize off of their value if things don't go well this season?

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: Despite going in on two top level players like Wanderlei Silva and Ernie Acuna, from the retooling Bulls and Magic, respectively, a few other teams--the Thunder, the Clippers, the Timberwolves, the Wizards--really started building themselves up as well. Do you think there is anywhere else you'd like the Lakers to improve to give them an edge on those other teams?

I think the biggest move was for Silva, which put me in cap danger for the first time, something that scared me to death my first few years. I wanted to believe that staying under the cap and making a run need not be exclusive from the other, but I thought in my growth as a GM I should at least introduce myself to the tax man. It may have been too early but I’m alright with that.

Looking at the contraction draft I didn’t see anything I liked after the first couple of picks honestly so I looked elsewhere. I saw the impact a guy like sherrill could have with the right pieces next to him, evaluated his weakness and supplanted him with wanderlei.

I want a good team! Though this is not the team that wins a ship. Not yet

BS they’re DEMIGODS

*clears throat* Not yet.

I want to learn some finer points of seeing how things work with a good team. While I had a lot of depth last year, I saw the value in having a few really great players as a key to victory more than being decent in starting lineup and decent off the bench. Probably won’t make many more moves until I see where I need to fill a hole.

They’re great teams this year. I lose to everyone of these teams except the Clippers in a playoff series as things stand right now. The main hole right now is Delmar, but he just needs more time.. this experience will pay dividends in his career down the road. I think he’s surrounded by enough talent to have a great regular season and go past the first round of playoffs, and then I’ll see where change must be made.

Any regrets in moving on from Loredo so soon? 20 year old guard who is 6'6" with some top tier athleticism and elite sharp shooting potential... those types are hard to come by!

Not much regret, no. He certainly had all the potential in the world to be great - and perhaps I did grow impatient after experiencing a modicum of success - but from my vantage point, to start contending, he did not fit in that picture with last years numbers:

Another TC and 72 points of player training later, he looks pretty good!

I wasn't ready and willing and rich enough to spend the points to get him there. I am young in the league, yes, but after watching Lopez grow for a few seasons without spending any points, and spending ~half of that on Leiker to make him badass NOW imo, I'm happy with my choice. Perhaps I was too new to appreciate two 1st round #1 picks in a row!
