The Wiz Are Running Out of Funny Stuff to Say

Post by Xist2Inspire »

Hey, it takes quite a bit of time and energy to come up with goofy press conferences season after season. I've used up all my best ideas by now anyway. :D

The Past:
Last season sucked. Others were surprised by our record early on, but we were performing about as well as I'd expected. And then Wenninger broke his leg. That pretty much put an end to our season, as he and Webb were the twin engines that made our team go. Without one, we simply weren't good enough. It's really a shame though, as we knew coming in that last season would also be Webb and Wenninger's last as Wizards. It's been a bit of a rocky road these past few years, but whenever we hit a high, those two were a huge part of it. We thank them, and wish them both good luck. Also making his exit was Angelo Chancellor, but more on that later.

The Present:
When planning for this season, I wanted this to be a laid-back kind of season. We really need a season where we can sit back, try new things, and figure out how to best move forward. To that end, we decided to keep Ivica Zubac and - after a quick but crazy series of events - Robert Oxford. Neither have really been given much of an opportunity to show what they can do yet, but they definitely will this year. I'll be honest, even though our roster looks pretty solid, I wouldn't expect many wins, as we might be mixing it up more often than usual. We still have our pick for n - er, I mean for a change, so yay for that.

The Future:
While it looks uncertain now, I think we have a bright future ahead of us. 6 of our 14 guys are 25 or older. The oldest of them is 28 and an expiring. The best of them is 25. We have a decent amount of young talent alongside Starr, Marsh, Oxford, and McBurney after trading Chancellor to Cleveland for Fults, Fanelli, and Lewis, as well as signing Terry Perez. And after a very solid training camp, we're even more excited to see what a few of these guys can do. This season may be meh, but keep your eyes on us anyway. Anything good that you see now will be great in the years to come.

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: JR Johnson looks like he has a renewed sense of purpose, but I noticed he wasn't mentioned at all in this press conference. Does this make him more valuable as a trading chip on a team that's trying to find itself, or is he part of the Wizards future?

Chad Marsh is due to hit RFA after this season. Do you believe he'll contribute this season and earn a max contract?

Well, when we said the best of our 6 older guys is 25, we weren't talking about Zubac and Fanelli (sorry guys). JR's definitely a part of our future, as PGs with his ability to direct an offense aren't easy to find. We're thrilled to see him get some of his mojo back after losing confidence back in Utah.

Any chance we see a "Chad Marsh, starting PG" line-up this season?

Marsh is an interesting case for us, as his slow development up until now has kept him off the court. Had we not spent last year battling with injuries, he probably wouldn't have played last season either. I honestly can't see him playing enough this season to earn a max, but when has that ever stopped anyone in RFA?

Victor's our starting 2 once again. He gave us exactly what we'd hoped for last season, and we're really excited to see what he does this year as one of our primary scorers. As for the role of team captain, that'll probably go to either Kingston (longest tenure) or Johnson (young enough to relate but experienced enough to lead).

Is this team ready to compete for a playoff spot and be a serious contender for the title in a very tough Eastern conference?

Probably not. Between Johnson, Fults, Desrochers, Newman, and McBurney, we're pretty well stocked on guys who can play PG. You probably won't see any of the super-extreme lineups we want to try just yet, as we don't think certain guys are ready quite yet.

Even though I seem to have gained a reputation for squeezing superstar results out of teams comprised of guys most consider role players, I'm not confident that I can get a title contender out of this squad, this season. I just don't think we stack up when looking at the top contenders.

Chad Marsh could be legit... someday. Are you ever going to train that defensive rebounding, tho?

Not when he has so many other wonderful things to spend points on...if I had any.

Nick Melon: The Advocate: While you can publicly deny it, the Wizards are consistently a team that overproduces and makes the playoffs at a steady clip. What yields the cohesion rating to be so great despite the talent level being so remarkably decent?

Hello, it’s the Daily Prophet here. Which team is more magical, your team or the Magic? The wizard in world must know the answer to this question.
