New York Knicks - Presser

Post by Inner_GI »

Off-season Events:

1. Drafted Markus Nunez
2. Resigned Nikola Jokic to a long term 5 year deal
3. Traded John Wall to the Clippers for Chet Dooley and Evan Turner
4. Signed Phil Hogg, Dewayne Dedmon, Julius Randle, Nicolas Batum, William Garrard, Shane Larkin

Thought Process:

This offseason we were limited by our cap space on what we could realistically do in free agency, so our focus was spent trying to trade draft picks and John wall for a balanced use of our cap. We were unable to find a deal for any of draft picks, but right before training camp, we acquired Chet Dooley and Evan Turner for John Wall; two players that we've had in the organization before.

We're excited for the continued development of Gary Harris and Nikola Jokic. The division is going to be tough, but the goal is always to make the playoffs and see how far we can go.

Do you think you could have gotten more value from the John Wall trade? Were there any other offers on the table for him?

Maybe in a perfect world I could have gotten more of a rebuild package, but I'm happy with getting a cheaper PG locked up for 2 years. This will make it easier to resign Gary Harris and make some moves in RFA and UFA next year.

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: The Atlantic Division looks like a little bit tighter of a race than it did last year. How do you see the division rankings playing out?

Celtics
76ers
Knicks
Raptors
Nets

I don't have the firepower to keep up with the young teams with an infinite amount of talent, but I still think we can win 50 games and be competitive.

Honestly, he enjoyed his time back home in LA, but I think the fit here with Harris and Jokic is a great move for his career. We are doing everything we can to make his return to New York as successful and enjoyable as possible. It was tough trading Dooley to Philly after his rookie season, but now that we have both Dooley and Harris together it feels a little poetic.

Random Reporter: It would seem that gaining depth was a key focus of your offseason. Was this in response to last season's rash of injuries? Do you feel as if this version of the Knicks are better prepared in case of emergency?

Actually it wasn't in response to the number of injuries we had last year. We just looked at our division and conference and believed that to actually compete, we'd need to use our cap space more efficiently this year and next. That's why getting Dooley for about 70% of the cost of John Wall was our main goal. Now, we don't have to worry about having 110M in salary on the books for next year.

The goal is the playoffs, but do you think that will be a big challenge, or do you need a stretch goal? Is that a higher seed or a deeper run?
Back in the day, I won the division a few times...

I could win 50 games and finish third in the Atlantic. There are going to be some really good teams in the East that' don't make the playoffs. I'd love to win the division and guarantee some home court advantage in the playoffs for sure.
