Setting Guidelines for Renaming Players

Post by digiskunk »

With all the talk about revoking the right to rename drafted players, let's consider the idea of establishing some guidelines for doing so instead. This will allow the system to continue, just as long as people follow a few simple rules:

1. No profanity or references to profanity (i.e. "Dirk Hardpeck"),
2. No television, movie, or books characters; no celebrities outside of the sports realm (though some instances, such as "Roy Hobbs" from the book "The Natural", could be considered acceptable barring a league vote)
3. No blatant gibberish that doesn't pertain to an actual language (i.e. "Xoohx Bexztphuvt"),
4. Nothing too long (i.e. "Cornelius Sharpshooting-Tibetanmonk XII"),
5. No renaming after well-known historical figures (i.e. "Julius Caesar", "George Washington")
6. Nothing outside of an actual, legitimate name (i.e. "Johnny Smokesweed", "Da WeedSmokah", "Dick Thruster")
7. No re-using names of past players (i.e. "Michael Jordan", "Scottie Pippen", "Wilt Chamberlain")

Is this a good start? We can always add onto it. This way, everybody will be happy.

Gonna have to name my dude Cornelius Sharpshooting-Tibetanmonk XII before either of these suggestions can pass.

I don't mind the historical figures/characters from books. I wouldn't mind seeing Samuel Clemons suit up or a Cedrick Diggory be active in the league. All the other stuff I agree with.

I think some of the historical names would/could be acceptable, just as long as they're common names — like Samuel Clemons, or maybe even George Washington, sure. But if somebody else proposes to rename their player "Lee Harvey Oswald", that's where I draw the line, lol. Actually, that name would be pretty badass to use on a sharpshooting SG...

I actually had no idea Julio De La Rosa was an actual person, I just named Galarza after one of my 2K create-a-players.

I had no clue neither! It's not like you made a blatant attempt at naming him "Lee Harvey Oswald" or anything.

Haha, no, but I'm still wondering if I should've named "him" A'ja Wilson or Elena Delle Donne. :D

What if we limited it to basketball re-names? No repeats, but we could bring the likes of kristaps porzingis and marvin bagley III into the fold.

I was hoping people who would name their players would do this, and I’m all for it.

May I submit here that if we come up with a list of what is verboten, some enterprising rules lawyer will try to come up with something that adheres to the letter of the law but not the spirit of the law. I think it might be more fruitful to give a list of options that will be explicitly allowed for sure (e.g., players whose college careers ended after 2015) and make the rest of the items guidelines... with the commissioner having discretion and veto power over anything not on the "explicitly allowed" list(s).
