Sim 3 Rankings
OK now that I have some time and we have at least 20 games under our belts, let's take a deeper dive into this rookie class. We are gonig to focus on the top 5 or 6 and then do a quick look at 5 guys who are putting up good stats in limited mins (aka please the point master and include his "rookie")
1. James "Juicy G" Gebhart - SG Utah Jazz
18.3 PPG / 6.3 RPG / 3.3 APG / PER: 14.6 / MPG: 39.6
Gebhart is playing the most minutes per game out of all rookies with 39.6 mpg, but is also putting up good stats albeit on a bad team. His best game of the year so far was in a victory over the Bulls were he scored 31 points, pulled down 8 boards and had 5 assists in 45 minutes. He is actually averaging 1 less shot per game than teammates Joseph Kight and Robert Neeley, but the Jazz look scary developing these 3 young guys all 22 or younger.
2. Tyler Ulis - PG Boston Celtics
21.0 PPG / 3.0 RPG / 2.7 APG / PER: 18.0 / MPG: 33.9
Ulis may very well stats-whore his way into the Rookie of the Year Award, the former Mr Basketball of Virginia isn't afraid to shoot. Ulis has scored at least double digits in every game this season except one. He is a volume scorer no doubt, but his ability at the FT line (94%) and around the rim (70% INS) makes him rather efficient. Ulis leads all rookies in 30 points games this year with 3 and will continue to try to score his way to ROTY.
3. Arthur Hardie - PF Sacramento Kings
14.8 PPG / 7.9 RPG / 2.7 BPG / PER: 16.9 / MPG: 32.9
Hardie started the season on the bench but has burst onto the scene in the last 2 sims. He is leading all rookies in rebounds per game and blocks per game. The next closest rebounder is a full board and a half behind. He uses his massive strength advantage down low to bully weaker opponents. He is grabbing almost 3 offensive rebounds per game and is making up for lost time attempting the second most shots on his team behind only Duren.
4. Dennis Smith Jr - PG Chicago Bulls
11.1 PPG / 7.4 APG / 2.0 SPG / PER: 14.2 / MPG: 33.3
It was really tough to choose between Joff or Smith Jr here. I gave the edge to the Bulls PG because he is leading all rookies in 2 categories, steals and asssists, plus he also has the higher PER. Dennis Smith Jr may have been the steal of the draft going 9th overall and being the 5th...FIFTH point guard taken in the draft. Rest easy Dennis...for now you're not 5th on this list.
5. Joffrey Baratheon - PG Toronto Raptors
14.5 PPG / 2.8 RPG / 4.9 APG / PER: 11.7 / MPG: 35.3
The first PG taken Joff is pretty raw and in his rookie season is still putting up good numbers. Baratheon has the potential to be an elite offensive Point Guard in this league. His scoring numbers have taken a slight hit each sim starting off hot with 17 ppg, 16 ppg, to now under 15 ppg. But still this PG has all-world potential and it will be interesting to see how early he can put it all together.
Quick Hits
There's the big dogs that are playing heavy minutes, but there's also a talented crop of rookies who are producing well in limited playing time. The top 5 rookies are averaging 35 minutes per game, so below I'll give these players actual stats and then show what they would be averaging if they would get the same amount of playing time as the real top 5 ROTY candidates.
1. Jayson Tatum is averaging 8.5 ppg and 2.5 rpg in just 14.6 minutes per game for the Trailblazers which would translate 20 and 6 if he got some more run.
2. Stewart Osterman is putting up 9 ppg and 4 rpg in 16.6 minutes per game for the Spurs. If he got full-time starters minutes he might be closer to 19.0 and 8.4 which would be tops for rebounding for rookies.
3. Markelle Fultz in just 15.8 minutes of action for the Sixers is putting up 8.1 ppg, 1.3 rpg, and 1.5 apg...his PER35 averages translate to 17.8 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 3.3 apg.
4. Roger Conlin for the Clippers is playing about 23 mpg and averages 9.9 ppg and 5.3 rpg...give the man another 12 mpg and he could be averaging 15 and 8...about what #3 Arthur Hardie is doing for the Kings
5. His teammate Abel Basile is also averaging 9.2 ppg, 3 rpg, 1.2 apg to go along with 1.3 steals per game. If he played 35 mins per game it could look like 16/5/2/2
Of course the question becomes with more playing time would these rookies automatically produce what they are doing in limited minutes...we'll never know. I haven't tracked the rookie class like this in the past, but it definitely stands out to me as one of the more talented and productive group of rookies in a while. This looked like a loaded draft class in the draft preview and leading up to the actual draft and so far the rooks are living up to the hype.
