Dear Miami,
You are my family. You drafted me in 2003 as a young, immature high school prospect. I had my whole life ahead of me, and you brought me through that life.
Our beginnings were turbulent. We struggled as a franchise for what felt like an infinite amount of time. Finally, we broke through the playoff barrier. We got to a few Eastern Conference Finals. We made it to the NBA Finals, but lost on a last second shot. I don’t know if anyone regrets that more than I do. I was supposed to be the leader of that team. I wasn’t though.
After that finals trip, we never missed the playoffs. We were able to maintain a talented team year after year. I got to play with some amazing players.
Jalen Rose was the first real leader that I played with during my time in Miami. In his prime, Jalen showed the grit and determination to be the best on the court every given night. I wouldn’t have my drive if it were not for his mentorship. Al Jefferson was the leader during our NBA finals appearance. He showed me not only how to be the best player I can be on the court, but also how to make other people better along the way. Jonas Valancunias is the new standard in Miami. Although not seen as a primary scorer, he is taking this team over as the incumbent star to lead this city to the promised land. So many people along the way helped me from Andre Iguodala to Goran Dragic. I thank each and every one of you.
My beautiful wife Savannah came with me to Miami as my girlfriend when I was first drafted. She has been my rock. In all of the ups and downs, she has been steady throughout the whole thing. In my darkest times after the NBA finals lost, she brought me back and kept me going. We bought our beautiful house together in Coral Gables. Other than her, I have three loves. All three are because of her. She birthed our three beautiful children Lebron James Jr., Bryan Maximus, and Zhuri James. I sacrifice everyday to make this world a better place for those three.
Thank you to owner James Rios for seeing me as the best prospect in a very talented draft. His choice brought me to Miami. Thank you to general manager Logpmess for standing by me through this long and arduous 13 year career. I, by no way, am done playing basketball. This sport is my first true love. I hope I have given as much to it as it has given to me. Thank you to Greg Cote of the Miami Herald for printing this and Dan LeBatard of 870am the ticket for the constant criticism both good and bad. No other city in the world lives up to the greatness of Miami.
Miami will always be my home. Until next time. Good luck and much love.
Lebron James
