Should I Stay or Should I Go? FA Preview

Post by kucoach7 »

As with every offseason, some of the top players in the league will make the critical choice between staying put and taking their talents to other teams. On the other end of the table, teams will make tough decisions about when to let an aging star walk, the value of a restricted free agent, and how far over the cap they are willing to go. Let's take a look at some of the most important free agent decisions this offseason.

Anthony Davis
Welcome to the league, Wombat! First up, you have the easiest decision in the world, resigning Anthony Davis. Anthony Davis, you better pray this GM is better than your last two GMs. If not, at least you get to leave Detroit for your offseason home earlier than if you were to go to the playoffs.
Verdict: Stay

Kevin Durant
There has been a lot of chatter about KD but let's be real. Durant has been a Clip his whole career, which has included a championship, four scoring titles, an MVP, and only one year in the lottery. He's not going anywhere.
Verdict: Stay

DeAndre Jordan
The two time defensive player of the year will get max offers from all over and will probably accept the one that comes from the Warriors given the success he's had there (see 2014). However, with Gobert in the wings and a bunch of young talent on the roster, I think it is likely DeAndre is traded to a contender.
Verdict: Go

Draymond Green
"My home isn't on the market but if a trape comes up blah, blah, blah..." Whatever. The Hawks just got a tax reset and still have tons of talent on the roster, Draymond isn't going anywhere.
Verdict: Stay

Bradley Beal
The Mavs had a disappointing season, suggesting their roster may not be built to compete but with Aldridge and DeRozan still on the books and a modest tax bill this last year, I expect FTB will give it another shot and hope that Beal's progress is enough to push the team into the playoffs.
Verdict: Stay

Damian Lillard
Blowing up champions has happened as recently as last year but the Pelicans just showed that a championship team can be built around Lillard and it was their first year over the cap. GM Negotiation Nick will make moves and shuffle things up this year but getting rid of Lillard won't be part of that process.
Verdict: Stay

Kent Bazemore
The Knicks slow rebuild finally came to fruition last year but Bazemore's status seems questionable. The Knicks have a wealth of guard/wing/whatever-Bazemore-is talent under contract and while Kent still has room to grow, he's also 27 coming off his fourth season. That should cool the market for him but the question is whether it cools to a sixth man contract level for a team that will be heading into their second year over the cap. I'm going to predict a sign and trade here as the Knicks opt for a consolation package with a lower ceiling prospect to cheaply grow alongside Jokic and Dooley.
Verdict: Go

Kris Middleton
In this case, Wig's house metaphor holds. If Wig gets an offer with a y/b in it or even a y/g he really likes at the right position, Middleton could move. As it is, I don't think those things will happen and Middleton stays.
Verdict: Stay

Brandon Jennings
The Lakers have a bright future, is Jennings part of it. With Tray probably sick and tired of losing and guys like Giannis and Cousins ready to win now, I'm going to say yes.
Verdict: Stay

Andre Drummond
The Nuggets cap situation is not great and Drummond will probably get a max. GM The Syndicate is a shrewd dealer though. He'll find a way to keep a defensive stud like Drummond around and fix the cap.
Verdict: Stay

Spencer Hawes
Without Bird rights and with Harrison Barnes an RFA, the Kings will be hard pressed to retain Hawes. With young studs like Noel and Vucevic on the squad it seems likely they'll stay young and fill the gap at wing by paying Barnes the big bucks and letting Hawes walk to team with more space.
Verdict: Go

Harrison Barnes
Barnes fits perfectly on the Kings roster. Even if he gets a max and GM Nola doesn't feel he deserves one, he'll probably still match
Verdict: Stay

Danilo Galinari
The two time all-star has been a Bull all his life and has been in the playoffs each of the last three years. It is unlikely he'd walk away from a max from the Bulls and with the most cap space in the league with two young studs on roster it seems like the Bulls are poised to give him just that.
Verdict: Stay

Ryan Anderson
The two time champ has become one of the great stretch fours in the league and is looking to cash in. The Jazz have the space to bring him back but they also have a lot of needs and 3 years on the tax repeater. My money is on Ryno sticking in SLC.
Verdict: Stay

Goran Dragic
Goran is 30 so he may start to decline but he still has the skills to demand big bucks, big bucks the Heat really can't afford to give him. This guy smells of a signing a min with the Hawks if you ask me.
Verdict: Go

Derrick Rose
I know y'all have been reading this to try to get some insight into what was going to happen with D-Rose so I figured I should save him for last. D-Rose has seen some success in his 8 years in Portland but has yet to bring home a League or even Conference title. Even more concerning is that the Blazers have nothing surrounding him. Nothing. Also concerning is the abysmal fan support the Blazers have had, even when they were one of the top teams in the league. Will D-Rose pass up the big contract and move to greener fields? Will the Blazers hit the full-reset button and sign and trade?
Verdict: Go
