What can usage teach us for this current season in the NBA? Coming out of the trade deadline and the first half of the NBA season, a whole heck of a lot...

Usage: Is defined as an estimate of the percentage of team plays used by a player while he was on the floor. In layman's terms, it is the number of plays used by a specific player.

So if we applied that measurement in efficiency to every team in the league as of 2/15/16, here's the complete list for every team in SLOE.

Knicks = Wesley Matthews; 26.2
Raptors = Chris Bosh; 29.4
76ers = Gordon Hayward; 25.2
Nets = Aaron Brooks; 23.8 (Buddy Pedraza @ 23.6; Aaron Afflalo; 23.5)
Celtics = John Wall; 29.0

Pacers = Deron Williams; 31.1
Bucks = Rudy Gay; 26.9
Bulls = Danilo Gallinari; 24.8 & Victor Oladipo; 24.7
Cavs = Al Jefferson; 27.6
Pistons = Anthony Davis; 37.9

Hawks = Nate Robinson; 29.3
Heat = LeBron James; 31.7
Wizards = Carmelo Anthony; 27.3
Magic = Jordan Clarkson; 24.5
Bobcats = CJ Miles; 23.5

Nuggets = Klay Thompson; 31.1
Timberwolves = Mitch McGary; 26.9 (Steph Curry = 26.4)
Jazz = Paul George; 31.2
Thunder = Isaiah Thomas; 25.3
Trailblazers = Derrick Rose; 33.9

Suns = Kevin Love; 38.0
Clippers = Kevin Durant; 34.1
Kings = Reggie Jackson; 26.5
Lakers = Brandon Jennings; 25.9
Warriors = Brian Stark; 31.7

Spurs = Russell Westbrook; 27.7
Pelicans = Damian Lillard; 29.1
Rockets = Al Horford; 25.9
Mavs = LaMarcus Aldridge; 27.7
Grizzlies = Brandon Roy; 39.9

Obviously from the list compiled, there's some obvious candidates (Anthony Davis and Kevin Love at the top), and some oddities that barely play (Brandon Roy & Mitch McGary). For each team however, they all tell a singular tale of success mixed with struggle. For a team like the Pistons and Suns, when you rely so heavily on a player as talented as Love and Davis, the #'s can be a tad skewed. Phoenix currently leads the pacific division while Detroit is at the bottom of the Central. Both players listed that high, rank atop many of the league leader categories. Love and Anthony Davis and Kevin Durant expect to be the top candidates for League MVP award at the end of the season barring any injuries. Much of that is obvious. Roy and McGary have played a combined 6 games between them and would be more likely candidates to be picked up by another team later in the season. Both are also non factors when it comes to their respective teams rotations so they're more likely to be found in garbage time at the end of the game or at the end of the bench. But now that we've explored both extremes, lets examine the median range of usage for those on this list.

The median usage rate combined came out to 29.1. Which perfectly matches the usage rate of New Orleans Pelicans star, Damian Lillard. If we took that average, it would spell 17 teams falling below that line. So for those 17 teams, falling behind that average, that would mean that the league is more proportionate than in years past. More stars on more teams means the distribution of the basketball is splitting stats amongst teammates. The ball don't lie after all. Indiana holds the best record in the league at 36-12 and arguably the best point guard in the game in Deron Williams. The Hawks currently lead the Southeast but one would not suspect on a team of Kris Middleton and James Harden that the leading man of usage would be Nate Robinson. The Hawks wide depth allows the for a more socialistic style of basketball where the needs of the team hold more weight than the needs of the individual.

For some, they may look at this list and make some adjustments to their DC's going forward. To others, they may find it satisfactory to find those that hold onto the ball the most and shoulder the bulk of the duties to lead the team and leave it as the status quo. For a developing team like the Warriors, Brian Stark's development as well as Buddy Pedraza of the Nets is important for teams looking to create a new nucleus within the draft the last few years. The Bobcats and letting the season coast by them allowing CJ Miles to score the basketball if no one else will. For teams hoping to make the playoffs, they'll certainly keep up with the growing trend to allow their premium scorers to continue to score. The fans depend on their stars to perform on a nightly basis for their teams to succeed.
