New Orleans Hornets Media Day 2013-14

Post by NickMalone77 »

Hornets Media Day
Have one Guinness.

Maybe another one...

Stew and kiss the blarney stone. Put it back in the pocket and thank God for another day. Without having the first round pick, last year was difficult season to go through but it was fortunate to see the talents of a cornerstone get a taste for the league. We are committed to developing that future with Damian Lillard at the helm, running the show. At the same time, we've struggled to put together a winning team, trying to build an insta-core and it never materializing these last few years.

That banner in the rafters just gets dust the more you see in the record books 20-30 win seasons. The ghosts of Gugs and ZBo past and those cheers are more silent than ever. Each year the critics words get to be more bold and heavier in criticism. Each year, the Central gets another bit stronger but that perspective will bury you if you let the concern mount itself. That's why it's good to have another Guinness.

Let that liquid courage ride...

The Concert
The line outside the New Orleans Arena seems forever even if it's only a mile or two down the strip. Flashbulbs and clicks from camera phones going off as fans are excited to attend this media day/concert session. A sea of turquoise, gold, purple, and white shirts and jerseys quickly filled the seats inside the arena as team attendants and ushers quickly guided people safely to their seats. There definitely was a "buzz" from the crowd as the spotlights quickly zoomed across the platform and stage usually reserved for the various logos and hardwood for the New Orleans Hornets. Nick Malone peaked through the curtains as the players gathered right behind him dressed in their various suits like it was draft night. Members of the media found their seats and quickly got in position to snap pictures and jot down any tidbits and insight for upcoming articles in the various publications locally and nationally.

Nick Malone: I will fade away and classify myself as obsolete....If this fails to deliver the most optimal results. You guys ready?

The lights quickly dimmed....A rush of stage hands ran onto the stage to assemble a giant electronic Hornet popping out from the ceiling of the Arena and millions of Hornet drones flying around as well as a few fans snapped some pictures of the drones in action.

Damian Lillard rushed onto the stage with a mic in his hand....

Nick Malone: Thanks everyone for joining us today. As you see here, everyone's excited to wear the teal and gold and for the season to begin. Dame Lillard burst onto the scene last year and we're hoping for more great things to come here in his Sophomore season. We approached the off season with the most salary cap in the league to spend after some cost cutting moves helped us get to this point even without our first round pick. We bought in with Washington looking to sell out and were able to select Shane Larkin. Larkin's gonna be able to get a great view from the bench to learn how this game is played and log some crucial minutes for us on our second unit but there were definitely more moves to come.

We had a lot of attention into RFA and a lot of talented players wanted to sign and play with a player with the talents of Damian Lillard. But alas, was not to be as the incumbent teams decided to bring back all the talent we signed. All is well and we wish the players that went back to their situations all the best luck in the world. So with only 4 players under contract we contacted our good friends in New York and struck up a deal to acquire stretch forward, Ryan Anderson, who'll serve as the primary power forward for this club this year ahead. Since overcoming a broken leg, Ryan's dealt with a lot of adversity but with this opportunity we're poised to see him thrive and succeed out on the wing and stretch the defense.

UFA was another adventure. We were able to sign versatile swing man Thaddeus Young along with crafty veterans Dwyane Wade and Marcin Gortat who will all play critical roles if our team is succeed in the next year ahead. We feel that playing next to Wade will do wonders for Lillard to take advantage of all the ins and outs of what this game has to offer. We're just glad we no longer have to play against Wade and his excellent defensive prowess. We were also able to sign some good veterans to some cap friendly deals that'll add to our bench unit for this season ahead and we're hopeful for a lot of teams to be sleeping on our success.

Random Reporter: Coventional thinking would say that the wise course of action in the offseason would be to invest in young talent only and let the chips fall where they may in the draft. Yet, the signings of Wade and Gortat seem to indicate a push for a playoff spot. What led you to take this approach?

Three straight years of losing seasons and 0 playoff appearances makes the idle hands slow and restless. While losing Andrew Bynum to Free Agency, Gortat is able to step right in and produce. Same with Wade. We still have a young core and talent that we feel would be an ultimate benefit for Damian Lillard too with Ryno and Thad. If it doesn't work out, we still have our picks as well. The Central is also a lot tougher but I think this team can do a lot of good things but everyone is gonna be tasked with doing more than what their previous roles on other clubs asked them to do. Hoping they thrive with the opportunity.

Some thought after all the RFA signings your team had, at least one would make it as a Hornet going into the season. My personal opinion was Carroll was there for the taking. What happened during your talks with the 76ers? Balls had to be motivated to move pieces around to begin his rebuild/reload.

Of all the pieces to be had from our RFA signings, we thought the most attainable were Tyler Hansbrough and DeMaree Carroll. As we saw the teams understandably match all of our fair and reasonable contracts, we knew and understood the advantages of RFA. I will say this though...

Given our discussions with various GMs, Carroll could've been ours. At the end of the day, the cost to take in Carroll even with the contract was too much for us to consider. Considering we didn't have our first round pick in the last draft and given some projections across the league already, we felt the asking price wasn't worth it to add the kind of player Carroll is and would've meant to our team. These next few drafts could be really important to our team if we can't make the playoffs these next few years.

We wish DeMarree nothing but the best for his run in Philadelphia.

Do you feel that Lillard's musical aspirations are too much of a distraction? Do you think he could better put that time to learning how to developing his defense or passing?

We don't think it's a distraction at all. He does all of his musical stuff during the offseason. Lillard trains also as hard as I've ever seen anyone train and he's willing to put in the work to improve in those areas too as evidence by his improvement in training camp. Our team lives and dies by what he's able to do and Dame is a special player. We will just continue to let the rest of the league sleep while we improve.

How do you feel your chances are against your competition in the Midwest? There isn't as much buzz around the Hornets as teams like the Raptors, who made major gains in the offseason via trade, or even the Pistons and Bucks. Yet, your 2 preseason wins were against Eastern Conference teams that are predicted to be top tier. Do you think this is a playoff season?

I'm not sure how I'd fare in the Midwest if we were placed in that division but knowing the Central, there's never a night off. The Hawks to me still look like the best in the division and I'm sure Toronto and Milwaukee are primed for big years ahead with their signings and acquisitions. I think after that, the East as a whole is wide open. The Atlantic took a step back with a few teams getting older and trading away talent. I think a lot has to hit for this team to make the playoffs but I definitely think the talent here, it's definitely possible.

Random Dallas Reporter:

Marcin Gortat was a good get for your team. Do you plan on keeping him for the next few years, or could he be traded at any moment?

Well, we didn't just sign him so he could be dealt the next day. We envision Gortat being a productive contributor for our club for the time of his contract. That being said, we'd be stupid to shut the door on any of our players if the right deal were to come along. The door is always open for a talk but we're glad to have Gortat around to anchor our front court for the time being.

What role do you see for Thaddeus Young in the future for the Hornets?

With his versatility and size, we think he's best positioned at the 3 or even maybe 4. Thaddeus was lost in the shuffle in Washington and Houston and now that we've got this space for him to get minutes and the position really all to himself, he could be that important bridge that could facilitate and pick his spots around Lillard and Ryno.
