Baby Grizzlies 2012-2013 Presser

GM Enrique walks out of the basketball gym and into the press room. He is in what is arguably a top 3 freshest SLOE GM suit. He has on some dope ass shades. A brand new watch. My god it's fresh. He takes off his jacket, his glasses, and rolls up his sleeves.

GM Enrique: Good afternoon everyone. You may have noticed the new look, figured that while we were throwing cash at the team, I wanted to throw some my way and freshen up my wardrobe as well.

GM Enrique: Wow that was a crummy season! I came here a year ago preaching light at the end of the tunnel, and we were right back to having the worst recordl in the league. But we saw some things. We saw Jimmy fight through injury to come back and put up great numbers. We saw Kahwi amongst the league leaders in steals as a rookie. We saw Bledsoe finally begin to look like less of just an athlete and more of an NBA PG. It looked promising but it wasn't enough. We were ready to add to our young core. Then the lotto happened...

GM Enrique: To say we were disappointed in losing the first spot in the draft again would be an understatement. We were crushed. While any of the top 4 players picked would've been a nice addition, having the first ripped away from you, makes all the losing hurt a bit more. But at selection time, we looked up, and through the tears in our eyes, we saw this giant of a young man and knew that he would fall right into our current current gritty defense first philosophy. We selected Andre Drummond and couldn't have been happier

GM Enrique: Armed with a young defensive core, and around $50 million in space, we knew we needed another big man, and some offensive fire power. In RFA, we managed to not lose anything and signed defensive stalwart Omer Asik from the Celtics and an interesting 3 & D wing in Courney Lee. In FA, we added Devin Harris who we hope will help to stabilize our team as a floor general. We also added a bit more shooting signing JR Smith & bringing back JJ Redick for a bit more punch. We rounded out the meat of our Offseason by sending out Ish Smith for the Ish Smith of PFs, Ed Davis.

GM Enrique: We're excited and a little nervous about this season. Our cubs are getting older, better and we decided instead of waiting around for another year, to add more around them to help them out. We spent a ton of cash and are hoping to not fall flat on our collective faces. That concludes this seasons presser. If there are any questions, now is the time. Thank you.

What kind of a role do you expect Asik to take with regards to mentoring Drummond?

Will Maukie: Rumor has it you were on the hunt this off-season, seeking out a power forward. Do you feel Ed Davis the answer to your problem or is he a short-term stop gap until you find another piece (or force Drummond into playing out of position)?

A large one. We believe that Andre can not only emulate, but can also expand upon Asik's bruising style with his size and athleticism. We plan on playing them together for now and we hope that both the time put in and having Asik out here will help him grow

The Grizzlies are a very wing-heavy team this year. With the caliber of players like JR Smith, Jimmy Butler, Courtney Lee, Kawhi Leonard, and J.J. Reddick, how will you deal with the minutes logjam?

No idea. We know we don't have that alpha type 20+ a game shooter now. We could definitely see Jimmy doing it again after he averaged 17 a game last season though.

The plan was always to have Drummond start. Whether that was next to Asik or next to another PF and he take the Center role. So yes, much like most teams when you have a glut in one area and a weakness in another, we looked to strike more of a balance. Ed Davis was exactly what we were looking for in a long term third big.

Random Reporter: Despite being a young and developing team, every move you made this offseason seems geared towards reclaiming the Midwest. Are the playoffs and beyond now the goal going forward?

We know not everyone will be happy with their minutes, but our priorities are making sure Kawhi and Jimmy see the floor as much as possible. So wing-wise, our plan is to have them start with doses of Lee and Smith to spell them. To help alleviate some of the burden, we plan on eventually having Kawhi play some 4. He's shown promise as a big and we're excited about having such an athletic threat at the 4. JJ is probably a non factor.

Courtney Lee or JR Smith for sure, don't know which yet, but to start they'll be coming in together. Their scoring off the bench will be immensely useful

Our outlook this season was that we needed to add some pieces either this or next offseason to our core before we got really expensive. We had a lot of cash to burn so we figured we'd use it to try to improve the team. Rather than piddling around the bottom of the league for another season we wanted to see some so we could begin to get a gauge on our young guys. While this year might not be a playoff year, we hope to be close to vault us into next season

Lack Zowe, Landgrant:

Are you concerned at all about Drummond being a liability at the free throw line? Will this limit his time late in games?
