A Surprisingly Normal Wizards Preseason Presser

Post by Xist2Inspire »

Image Well, the first post-Rashard era sure went well, huh? Hello, and welcome to the DC Wizards' 2011 Preseason Presser. Let's start by taking a quick look back.

The Wizards' forecast for the past season

The Wizards' weather forecaster for the past season

Image This pretty much sums up our season last year. Despite a few early moments of hope, things eventualy regressed to the mean, and a few injuries made sure that we'd never get back into our early-season groove. It had become clear that despite our hopes, the team had run its course, and with extremely limited cap space, it wasn't going to get any better. It was time.

Image
A visual representation of our plans for the roster

Image Zaza, an upcoming unrestricted free agent, was the first to go, being dealt to the Hornets for a bag of chips. Then, Danny Granger was sent to the Kings after a lengthy series of talks between our two organizations. In return, we ended up with James Johnson, Tyreke Evans, Reggie Evans, and two draft picks, one each in 2011 and 2012. Unfortunately we had to give up our own 2011 pick, a risky move given our position in the standings, but we felt that the positive of acquring a rising young star in Tyreke outweighed the negative of losing our first. And not too long after we completed the deal, our risk paid off unexpectedly when we were able to use our newly-gained cap space and future pick to acquire NBA Champion Ersan Ilyasova, a player we've admired from afar for a long time. A similar situation emerged this offseason, when we were able to use the draft pick gained from trading Carl Landry to Boston during Free Agency to bring Gerald Green back to DC. Brandon Roy was also shipped to New Orleans in the deal. We really want to thank Zaza, Carl, and Danny for the time they spent here, and dearly wish things would've gone better. Oh, and Gilbert Arenas was traded to Denver for a couple of second rounders. That also happened.

Image
The reason why Arenas wanted to go back to Denver

Image Now on to the good stuff. Thanks to the mass exodus of talent, we found ourselves with more cap space than we've had in years, and we knew exactly what we wanted to do with it - aggressively go after young talent to team with JaVale, Tyreke, and Ersan. That strategy paid off when Wilson Chandler and Thaddeus Young, as well as Gerald Henderson, decided to sign with us. Training camp came, and just about everybody came in and put in work to get better.

Image
The "about" in "just about"

Image To be totally honest, spirits haven't been this high for the Wiz in a long time. I know from the outside looking in things don't look quite so rosy, but I can tell you, we feel great about our future. We have the youth, the talent, and most importantly, the cap space. Sooner or later, we'll be back in the playoff mix. Count on it.

Jean Baptiste, Van Memphis Free Press

For at least a couple of years, you seemed to be a GM on the verge of blowing it up. With this influx of young talent you seem to have done a sort of "soft reset" seemingly on the fly. Can you describe the difficulties, if any, when doing this sort of rebuild?

GWR: I know I've asked this before, but it changes each year. Who's the guy? Who leads this team in scoring? Who leads it in the locker room?

We send our warm regards you your organization and Tyreke Evans. Speaking of, do you feel Reke is on the verge of becoming your #1 star player after another good training camp?

Image Truthfully, the biggest difficulty is getting out of your own way and just letting things happen. Sometimes you can push too hard one way or the other and mess things up, or you can get complacent and let opportunities pass you by. It's just so important to know when and how to strike, and not let feelings get in the way.

Image Heh, and once again I don't really have an answer. I don't really want "a" guy. I want two. Or three. Maybe four. One guy can only get you so far. As for who leads the team in scoring? I have four guys who could do that, so picking just one is impossible. But as for the locker room leader, it's Jarrett Jack, the hometown hero. He has championship experience, he's been in DC for a while, and he knows what it takes to win. But even then, it's not just him. I'm hoping Gerald Green can connect with the new breed on their level. He's a vet and is familiar with how we do things, but he's young enough to relate to how they do things. We're really hoping to build a stronger culture here in DC.

Image Thanks, and take care of Granger for us. We certainly hope that he can be a #1 kind of guy. We're planning to use him differently than most teams would, but we're confident that he'll be up to the task.

Thaddeus Young got very limited time this preseason. Do you think your coaching staff may be holding him back?

Thaddeus Young was a high pick for the Rockets, but never started a game. What did you see in him to give him a lot of money guaranteed this upcoming season.

Image When it came time to look at free agents, what made Thad stand out from the rest was his potential. Here was a 23-year-old 6'8" athlete with the speed and strength to play 3 different positions. We felt like that was just too good to pass on, and since our mission was to acquire talent by any means necessary, we felt comfortable sending him a big offer to outbid others and secure his services. After all, if we were able to recognize his potential, surely other GMs were able to as well.

Image For the preseason, the coaching staff was more focused on testing out a more "standard" lineup, as opposed to the one we plan to run. Rest assured, Thad will get his minutes once the season officially starts.

What do you think the time frame is before you can really compete? Are you just a year out or do you think you'll need a couple to get all the pieces aligned?

Image Personally, I think we're a year or two away. We have a brand-new and young roster, and a few guys will be asked to do things they've never been asked to do before. Even when taking on-court chemistry out of the equation, it'll take a while before our coaching staff can even get a good feel for utilizing this roster. So while we certainly won't be pushovers, don't expect us to be world-beaters either.
