Playoff and Lottery Races

Post by TrayWithAnA »

To explain what I did:
  • 1. Pulled remaining schedule for all potential division winners.
    2. Manipulated the standings table to give wins & losses columns for both road and home records.
    3. If the team played the opponent at home, then the opponent's away record was considered. If the team played the opponent on the road, then the opponent's home record was considered. This value is represented in the 'Opp. Rec. @ Home/Away' column.
Now the Table:

Analysis:
  • Eastern Conference Playoffs - Hornets and Heat look like locks over the competition. They should retain the 6 and 7 spots with far weaker strength of schedules. The Wizards may have too much room to make up and Cavaliers have similar strength of schedules while down 1.5. Only mix up is Heat jumping Hornets.
    • 6. Heat
      7. Hornets
      8. Pacers
      9. Cavaliers
      10. Wizards
Western Conference Playoffs - Nuggets are three and a half games up on the Wolves and Suns with a weaker strength of schedule. There spot at 6 is pretty safe in this race. Suns have a weaker overall strength of schedule while the T-Wolves get the advantage with the Home/Away record factored in. This is a tossup, but my "I've been friends with this guy for over 20 years" bias is going to come in here.
    • 7. Nuggets
      8. Suns
      9. Timberwolves
Lottery - Lot of bad going on here but the only place I can really see an obvious advantage is with the Mavs jumping the Sixers. They are going through a lot harder schedule to end the season and I think it is a much bigger certainty that these percentages are greater locks. Everything else should stay similar.
    • 1. Bulls
      2. Warriors
      3. Trailblazers
      4. Mavericks
      5. 76ers
      6. Raptors
      7. Rockets
      8. Jazz

Playoff and Lottery Races

I'd call this a half assed effort. Basically I didn't take the division predictions into account.

Nuggets didn't finish 7 because I had them finishing above the Spurs.

Jinxed my boy Garrett who finished with the same record as the TWolves. Guess I should have looked at their head to head record.

Lastly, flipped Mavs & Blazers and rockets & Jazz in the lottery but that one was a crapshoot. At least my prediction of the Mavs out tanking the Sixers was right. Right?

Zero out of 3.

I didn't even want to make the playoffs, but at least proving you wrong feels good. :)
