Let's look at some of the top prospects of this draft [note: Player Comparisons based off of Sim League incarnations]....
KEVIN DURANT

Image

Player Comparison: Dominique Wilkins, Carmelo Anthony

Pros: Durant is projected to be the top pick of the draft, and rightfully so! Quite possibly one of the most athletically gifted and offensively-adept players to come out since Lebron James in 2003. Kevin's ability to create for himself or drill a three from deep has scouts drooling and lotto teams dreaming. On defensive side of the ball, shows flashes of establishing position, setting feet and defending the post. Could develop into above average defender on the defensive side of the ball. Generational talent, instant impact player for any franchise, could be a future MVP-level star.

Cons: Pretty raw on the perimeter, defensively. Will not be a lock-down defender on the wing. Focus on offense is scoring; don't expect him to be anywhere near the position to grab offensive glass. Not the best passer (but seriously, if he can score at will, why pass?)

Draft Prospect Grade: A+

Marc Gasol

Image

Player Comparison: Benoit Benjamin, Andryvas Sabonis

Pros: Gasol is dominating in Spain, and scouts feel he has all the attributes to be a dominating center in the NBA as well (one day). Two-way player. Lateral quickness helps him establish good position as a defender. Can develop into a very solid shot blocker. Strong. Above average rebounder, especially on the defensive glass. Good court vision for a big man, willing to make a sneaky pass when the right look presents itself.

Cons: Very raw; could take seasons to adjust to the transition from Euro ball to NBA style of basketball. Not the best jumpshooter. Struggles to establish position on offensive boards.

Draft Prospect Grade: A

Greg Oden

Image

Player Comparison: Duane Causwell, Ervin Johnson

Pros: Has the size to be a headache for anyone in the paint. Very strong and athletic. Above average rebounder, with elite offensive rebounding ability. Greg uses his size and strength to attack the point of release, disrupting many shots and blocking others.

Cons: A little slow-footed, leading to occasional defensive lapses. Not a creator on offense; do not expect him to be a dominant force on offense.

Draft Prospect Grade: B-

Joahkim Noah

Image

Player Comparison:

Pros: Intangibles through the roof. Natural leader and plays with passion. Dominates the glass on both ends of the court. Strong post defender who can be a rim protector. Could be an impact player immediately on the defensive side of the ball. Quickness to play the 4 or 5. Ability to come out on the perimeter to defend stretch bigs. Amazing handles and passing for a big man.

Cons: Not going to be an offensive juggernaut. Beg him not to take a jumpshot. Needs to get stronger in order to sustain the grind in the paint against other bigs in the NBA.

Draft Prospect Grade: B+

Jared Dudley

Image

Player Comparison: Bobby Phills, Shandon Anderson

Pros: Shooting specialist. One of those "do everything players". Has the ability to get in the jersey of his opponent on defense and pick his pocket here and there. Quickness and size to play shooting guard and small forward.

Cons: If you are looking for a rebounding wing player, look elsewhere. More likely to settle for jumpshots than drive into the paint. Can move the ball around the perimeter to keep offense flowing, but not actively looking to create for others.

Wilson Chandler

Image

Player Comparison: Shandon Anderson, Ricky Davis, Richard Jefferson

Pros: Wilson Chandler is another scrappy player. Very good length and wingspan for a shooting guard. Has the size and quickness to be lethal at the 3. Relies heavily on his jumpshop, but can shoot the three and drive to the basket on occasion. With some time, shows potential to be an excellent defender on the perimeter and in the post. Could develop into a decent defensive rebounder. Rates very evenly across the board in many categories. Versatility is a major plus.

Cons: Very raw. Not a good passer. Could take some time to fill out and reach potential. Not going to generate many turnovers as he tends to shy to a more conservative style of defense.

Thaddeus Young

Image

Player Comparison: Stacey Augmon, Tayshaun Prince meets Juwan Howard

Pros: Length to play both forward positions. Focused on his inside, back to the basket game, but developing a consistent jumpshot and stretching his range. Can grow into a decent offensive rebounder. A pest on the perimeter, with the knack to create turnovers. Quiet individual; lunchpail player.

Cons: Body is still growing; could take seasons to become a consistent contributor. Not a great rebounder on the defensive end. Needs to put time in the weightroom to continue to mold his body for the NBA

Al Horford

Image

Player Comparison: Tom Gugliotta

Pros: Two-way player who could develop into a cornerstone down low. Potential to have a great inside-out game on offense. Instant impact player on defense. Bodies up opponents and disrupts shots. Rim protector.

Cons: Offensive game needs to be polished; could take a few seasons. More detriment on offense than help. Size could be an issue against bigger centers. Could play the 4, but may struggle with his quickness.

Draft Prospect Grade: A-

Mike Conley

Image

Player Comparison: Nick Van Exel

Pros: Jump shooting point guard with elite quickness. Looks to get others involved early and often. Can shoot from deep. Does not shy away from clutch situations. Flashes of potential to be an above average perimeter defender. Creates turnovers when pressing.

Cons: Needs to hit the weightroom. Struggles to finish at the basket. Turnovers could be an issue early on. Don't expect rebounding to fill up in the box scores.

Draft Prospect Grade: B

Aaron Afflalo

Image

Player Comparison: Joe Johnson, Jerry Stackhouse

Pros: Polished jumpshooter. Could develop into an elite 3-pt threat. Doesn't attack the rim often, but when he does he shows flashes of greatness when attacking the rim. Good size and quickness and athleticism for a shooting guard in the NBA.

Cons: Defensive sieve; be prepared to surround him with defenders. Hesitant to attack the rim. Below average passer. May be turnover prone in iso situations.
