Learn your GM Profile with one easy click!

Post by ballsohard »

Good morning all,

Myself and 3 other GMs will be rating each GM in the league with a 5 star rating system and doing a write-up behind each one. We will try and do 1 profile per day and post them up. There will be 5 ratings that we will use:

Trading :

How well the GM fares in trades. Does this GM win the fair share of their trades? When it's time to win a championship are they willing to take a loss to get a net team positive? Are you proactive in searching out trades or do you wait for something to come to you always?

Scouting:

We all know scouting is an important part of the game. After all, what's the point of getting a high pick or opening up cap space if you pick the wrong guy or send out a max contract to a guy who's not a difference maker. In this category we will judge how the GM fares in drafting and FA acquisitions.

Coaching:
So your team has talent, or it doesn't. What do you do with that talent on the court? Do you win with it? Can you win without a ton of talent? What happens in a playoff series when the chess match begins?

Pedigree:
This is more of a what have you done in this league so far. We've all seen great GMs have the talent, the coaching, the scouting; but for some reason not win a ring or make it far in the playoffs. This will assign a value on "What has he done? Championships? Multiple division titles? "

Overall:

What is this GM rated overall. Sometimes the sum of parts will not fairly portray the whole, sometimes it will. Here we will give an overall rating.

I'm sure this will generate a ton of debate and feelings, but I think that's what makes this league great. Please let me know any and all input you have for this.

WIG NOSY
Image
The only legitimate 4-time champ in the league, Wig Nosy has created two separate dynasties in two separate decades. At first, he used his knowledge of creation drafts and the game to build an older team with a dominant yet short window. After, he bid his time, laying in wait much like a snake waits in the grass for its victims to come.

And they came.

With these two men and the team he built in the meantime, Wig was able to once again stranglehold the league. He did it by trading and waiting more than coaching. And even though this made him a constant victim of the salary cap and luxury tax, it allowed him to win titles, which is what everyone wants to do every year.

Some won't trade with him. Some dismiss him as a traper. But all respect him, and all understand the results speak for themselves.

A victim of his own success, GM Bowtothebill has one of the most impressive resume's we've seen. Bow always waited for the right moment to get the right deal for his team. As possible the greatest pick ever, Bow took Kemp in the redraft of 1990; and as a stroke of luck TC made him an unstoppable monster. A lot of his ratings that aren't 5 stars are due to the believe that Kemp carried that team and Bow did not mess it up. Essentially Bow is considered the Erik Spolstra of sim league. There's a lot to be said for not messing it up though. There have been teams that were blessed with All-World talents that couldn't even make it to the championship game muchless making 2 finals and winning two.

Through his peak years, Bow made strong trade after strong trade but was not very proactive in getting them. One could say he was more like a Venus fly trap and waited for victims to fall into his trap. A lot of other negative marks goes along with how he left his team when he had to take a sabbatical. This team was left in financial shambles and aren't any closer to having much talent on their team in the post Kemp years.

Only time will tell if it were Kemp and Bow, or just Kemp.

Fearthebrow came in as GM just after the departure of Darth and inherited the defending champs with the following players: OPenny Hardaway, Sabonis, Hakeem the Dream, young PG Brevin Knight (pre-nerf) and Eric Piatkowski as RFA (not to mention all-leaguer-to-be Antwan Jamison in his rookie year). All he had to do was resign Piat and stay the course. So in his first act as GM, he trades Sabonis and Brevin Knight (and a pick) for Kelvin Cato (and a pick). This was one of many trades that FTB made over the course of his tenure. Although the biggest trade of his reign centered around Penny Hardaway in the 2000 off-season. He acquired Andre Miller and Donyell Marshall for the future HOFer, which led to one of those above-mentioned Hawk championships. But let's focus on the Mavs. He brought in Donyell Marshall and Andre Miller. Donyell eventually netted him All-Star Center Marcus Camby. As we can see, he's not afraid to make franchise changing trades. And many of his deals have paid off for him.

But when his trading exceeding expectations, his scouting sometimes was suspect, especially in Free Agency. The most recent example being the signing of underachieving Chris Anderson in RFA for $32 million over 4 years. Some feel his signing of Derek Fisher, albeit being the reigning 6MOY, was a bit of an overpay as well. However, the GM has made some great signings over the years, notably Robert Pack. So it's not all bad for the Dallas GM.

The next two ratings (Coaching and Patience) go hand in hand. While not afraid to make a franchise changing trade, FearTheBrow only does so when it is absolutely necessary and feels there is no one else in-house that can take care of the job. He explores all options and gets the best out of his players.

Coming in and inheriting a World Champion gives you some high standards to live up to. However, FearTheBrow rose to the challenge, making it to the playoffs 6 times over his career. On top of that, he led the franchise to 3 Midwest Division crowns and represented the West in the 2002 Finals. The past two years, his rosters has probably been one of the best to see the court during his tenure, but late season injuries plagued the Mavericks, dooming them to early post-season exits.

Financially, considering their team success, the Mavericks have been relatively stable financially. They've never been more than a 2-year repeater in the tax, and even then the tax bill was almost as low as it can get. FearTheBrow has been excellent at putting the best product on the court while saving league cash to spend on team training facilities.

All in all, FearTheBrow came in and has lived up to the high expectations of the Dallas Maverick fan base. While they have not won a Championship, the ability to constantly retool a team multiple times over the course of 7 seasons without overspending is something that many teams aspire to have in a GM.

Thanks for write-up. Good stuff. However, I did not inherit Sabonis or Brevin Knight.

This is the team I inherited: http://pbsl.ijbl.net/1998/rosters/roster10.htm

A tale of two different GMs, who is the same person. X1st, who actually changed his name to J2 to start the league, has either been hot-or-cold, hit-or-miss type of GM. Notably known as the "Nicest GM in the league", X1st and his Wizards were sort of an afterthought in the early 90s. It didn't help that he didn't make the playoffs until the 1995 season, but after the long drought we finally started seeing the Wizards as a competitive team in the Atlantic.

X1st isn't known as a splashy trader, but he isn't afraid to make big moves to land big names. Acquiring Shaq and team leader Anthony Johnson really sent this team to another level and has helped build the pedigree of X1st, and so did the drafting of the foundational pieces of Rashard Lewis and Lamar Odom. X1st has also claimed 4 divisional titles and made a Finals appearance since the 1995 season. Not too shabby.

X1st hasn't had the success their rival Boston Celtics have had throughout the history of the league, as he has only finished with 50 or more wins 3 times. It is fair to point out that those 3 seasons have been the past 3 seasons in a row (a tale of 2 GMs) and looks to continue building on that success. He has also only made it past the second round once, which was the season he went to the Finals.

In the end, X1st is one of the most patient GMs in the league. We rarely, if ever, see a trade by the Wizards and think "bad move" or "rushed" which is a testament to his confidence in building his team. He is also not notoriously known to accumulate high tax bills, which is always a plus in the stability and sustainability of fielding a competitive team.

Let’s be honest here, Runningback15 hasn’t had much time here to prove what he can do. That’s the only reason he has a one-star pedigree rating: it takes time to learn the ropes when you’re going in blind. Having a friend help you is important when you’re learning, but sometimes you need to make some mistakes for yourself.

And that’s what Runningback15 has done. He’s made mistakes, but good moves too. He made a trade that was mocked at the time when he sent Posey out for a pick, but then that pick turned into the #2 pick in the draft to go with his #1 pick. That netted him Dwight Howard and Kevin Martin, two prospects who are about as good young talents to build around as any.

But those mistakes…well, they may be mistakes. Time will tell. All the same, matching a max contract to a productive-but-limited-potential Tony Parker may end up biting him in the ass. Or he may be just the piece needed to surround Martin and Howard. It could go either way. And because he clearly has a vision and hasn’t yet gotten into serious cap trouble (though that will likely change soon), it’s not all bad in Motown.

Overall there isn’t much information to judge RB15 on, but we didn’t have a “TBD” star so we’re going with this instead. He’ll have plenty of chances to make a better grade as time goes on.
