Lakers 2005 Pre-Season Press Conference

Post by TrayWithAnA »

Welcome, all. I would first like to thank the Los Angeles Laker organization for giving me another chance in the general manager role. I guess that it was determined that I couldn't be any worse than a general manager who trades off Kevin Garnett. Again, glad to have the opportunity to be in this league again, and I hope that the feeling is mutual.

Let's get into the whirlwind of an offseason that just wrapped up for the Laker organization this morning. With just over $41,000 left in salary cap room, It is safe to say that we are done at this point.

First things first, the draft. We finished with a less than stellar season after our best player was traded off. At #9, we knew that we would find someone who could contribute, but unfortunately, we missed out on the real stars of the draft.

With the Pistons #6 pick, we selected Andrew Bogut. With only three players on the books, we had the opportunity to go BPA and know it would likely contribute immediately. Bogut has strong potential to be a very capable starting center in the future. Since Center and PG were the only two positions that we were bone dry on, Bogut represented the best option for our franchise moving forward. His upside puts him as a player that could be expensive to retain, but we feel like that sort of demand means he helped this franchise out. All-in-all, we are very pleased with landing Bogut since he could have gone earlier with Centers being in high demand.

With our pick at #9, we selected Raymond Felton. When the ninth pick of the draft is the fifth player taken at that position, that could normally be looked at as disappointing. The great thing about it is that Raymond is very driven to prove that the other teams made a mistake when they went in other directions. We see he has potential and hope to have him in a Laker uniform for a while.

Image

With picks #16 and #17, we selected Linas Kleiza and CJ Miles. Both will bring much needed depth to the bench, and should be able to develop into spot starters.

Image Image

We decided to skip RFA...errrrrrr....we forgot. With just over $29M in cap space, we went hard in round one of free agency, and boy, did that pay off!!!

Our last two additions, starting SG/SF Kobe Bryant and PF/C Jermaine O'Neal.

There is not much more that needs to be said about Kobe Bryant. Because he is a little more equipped physically than Larry Hughes to play the 3, we will start the year with him there and Hughes at the 2. We are very very excited about the next four years with Bryant in his prime.

Image

Jermaine O'Neal is a guy I have been interested in since he came into the league, and while the contract obviously higher than what anyone else offered, we think it was a key target to fill an opening at PF. Plus, he will give Bogut the much needed time to develop at Center.

All six additions will be here for questions as well as the three returning Lakers. Feel free to fire away with your questions. This is of course before they have to leave to begin Training Camp. :-/

What are you looking for in Day 2 of free agency?

How do you feel you'll be able to handle the shadow of GM InnerGI?

You have a bevy of youth mixed in with some veteran leadership. Obviously, training camp has not happened yet, and we all know how that can be a franchise changing event. But if opening day was today, where do you think your team would end at the end of the season? Do you see playoffs as a viable option? Or do you think the learning curve for your young players may keep you in the lotto?

We decided to stay out of day 2 of free agency. With less than $50k left in the salary cap, we were gonna be left with only league mins and decided we weren't willing to do the research needed to really nail the 11-13 spots of our bench.

I thought it was inner who was always under a shadow. Cheer up, bud.

Our product is completely different than the Laker teams before us. Our goal is to build something uniquely ours and hope that it meets the caliber of the previous championship teams before us. We think with a little time, we could be a contender in this league.

Without having analyzed the other teams, it is hard for me to make a call on whether we are playoff bound. I will say this, the same reasons why TC can wreck a team are the same reasons we could become dangerous. So gun to my head, as it stands today, I think we are just on the outskirts looking in. That is mainly because there is a lot of potential on this team that could come out in TC.

Dr. Rocker, The Cleveland Rocker:

Why will you fare better here than in Detroit?

As a follow up, where do you fall in the debate that has been raging since the 60's: It is said that "the Northern girls with the way they kiss, they keep their boyfriends warm at night," and yet "I wish they all could be California girls." Take your stand.
There's no "I" in team, but you can find "Eat me" if you push it too far.

I'm hoping that what makes me successful is the quick reboot I have managed with 4 rookies and two vets who are both in their prime. When my Pistons team was built around Steve Smith and Reggie Miller, there wasn't much else on the lineup to get excited about. The one time we had a few draft picks, Christian Laettner was a complete bust. Hoping that the guys I drafted this year will at least be able to play the game of basketball in years 2 and 3.

I don't think there is any question that "I wish they all could be California girls."

Just a raw analysis, but, the Lakers organization saw improvements across the board. Highlighted by Linas Kleiza and Reggie Evans who have made arguments for increased roles in this rotation. While we were expecting to start both Bogut and O'Neal, it is looking like Evans may start as a true PF. We still expect most minutes to go to the two main big men, but Evans should relieve some of that pressure.

Kobe and Hughes had steady camps. Allen and Miles proved they are ready to be key backups.

The one disappointment at this point is that we didn't see a huge bump by Raymond Felton. He will still start, but that could prove problematic for our team. We will look to acquire a capable PG backup. Maybe in a lower minute count, we will see the best we can out of Felton.

Where does Larry Hughes fit into the Lakers' long-term plans?

Random Reporter: What drove the decision to use your cap space to make big free-agency splashes, as opposed to opting for a slow and steady rebuild behind your multiple picks?

We still see him as the heart and soul of this team. We look forward to the opportunity to lock him up to another long term contract before next season.

In one word - Kobe.

We saw that the market had some big players that would either fit instantly into any team or become trade fodder for a young rebuilding team. Out of that trade fodder, we landed Kobe. Should prove for a real fun experiment. We dedicate ourselves to throwing every resource we can at this team, and if that means luxury tax hell, so be it.

Looks like the purse strings of Inner GI will finally be loosened.

Jermaine O'Neal's contract is over $2M less than a max contract. We felt like we got a quality player for about what the asking price should have been. We agree though. A max would have been too much.

He left all his belongs here in the GM mansion. I spotted the purse very quickly when I moved in.
