Sacramento Kings Media Day - 2005

Post by NOLa. »

Welcome, everyone, to yet another edition of the Official Sacramento Kings Media Day of 2005! Let's jump right into the thick of things.

Last season we went all in, trading a lotto pick for Shawn Marion, who we always had a crush on. Unfortunately I may have loved him too much. Marion endes up getting hurt within the first three sims for me and was out until Game 7 of the 2nd Round of the playoffs against the Spurs... yeah that didn't end as well as I had hoped. I'll be the first to admit that with just one game to sim and a superstar coming back, I goofed on the gameplan. I inserted Marion back in on limited minutes, and he actually played well. Unfortunately, I didn't trust him enough to give him full minutes and I paid for it.
So an early exit after being the top West seed. What a waste, right?

I have to disagree with this thought process. I was able to turn my team around from the previous season finishing as the 6th worst team, to the top seed in the West and finished with GMOY honors and a team primed to make huge improvements in training camp.

And boy, were the gains massive.

The young guns in Hinrich, Chandler and Deng made huge strides in improving their overall talent. It waa great to see, because Jack actually regressed a little in his point guard skills. McGrady had an okay camp. Shareef had another mild gain training camp, which was HUGE because we always worry abput older players who were hit ij training camp before. Much like Shareef, Marion had a mild training camp too. No big gains, no big losses. Again, that is HUGE for us because he averaged 18-10 with the Grizz before arriving here.

We look forward to another great season and we hope to maybe even make it past the 2nd round.

Quesions are always welcomed.

One rather controversial offseason move was matching the offer to Tyson Chandler. Historically maximg defensive/rebounding centers doesn't turn out well...what made you decide to retain him?

In a team full of wings and guards, Chandler is my only young big man that I consider a foundational piece. Shareef is on his last year here in Sacramento and we will need Chandlers defense and rebounding to keep McGrady, Hinrich, and Deng free from crashing the boards.

Chandler also hasn't come close to remotely reaching his very impressive potential. Towards the end of his deal, trust me, this max will look like a steal of a deal.

Rando Reporter: Leaks out of Charlotte say you were offered a really big package that had you salivating once you saw the goods. Some say it was almost as big as Hershal Walker's package. What say you to those rumors?

There is a lot of truth to this. A lot.

I can't scoff at what was offered and honestly Nick really showed how much he wanted to win, and how much he valued Chandler, which I respect a lot as a fellow GM.

In the end, the offer was very focused on building through the 2006 draft. I'm not that high on the draft, and my team is built to win now. My high hopes for Chandler have manifested into a gamble.
