I propose we abolish protection on draft picks after this season (picks already protected would be grandfathered in and retain their protection). We're not keeping close enough tabs on them to prevent things like this:

We've also seen protection used to skirt the "no trading consecutive years' picks" rules with things like top-28 protection on a pick so the pick being traded is "really" the following year's pick and the protection is just there to satisfy the Stepien Rule.
If you're going to trade away a pick, you need to be prepared to assume the risk. If you're worried it will be a top pick,
you shouldn't be trading it away. Plus, it's a whole lot of extra work to keep track of them all.
