Grizz 03-04 Post-Pre-Season/Pre-Regular Season Presser

Enrique: Hey everybody! I know it's been awhile since we talked after we decided to skip the presser last season. We just got back from Houston and our final pre-season game where assistant coach Uter did a great job of getting the win 115-111. Let's begin shall we:

Enrique: Last season was a nice one for use. After hovering around the 40ish win mark the last couple of seasons, we were finally able to get over the initial growing pains of having an All-Star caliber guard in Eddie Jones join an already crowded wing group. We did this by having Eddie come off the bench as a super spark off the bench. It seemed to help the team greatly, and after starting 14-12 (.538) we were able to finish the season with a 43-13 (.768) record with Eddie as the 6th man. This spark allowed us to come from 4th place in the Midwest and eventually win the division. Eddie Jones was also rewarded for his sacrifice as he was both an All-Star and the winner of the GM vote for 6th Man of the Year (The real vote)

Enrique: In round 1, we had a tough draw with the MVP of the league in Timmy Duncan and the Utah Jazz. We were able to eek out the series win in 6 games to a tough opponent. After that we faced the buzz saw that was the eventual Western Conference representative in the Finals, the San Antonio Spurs who dispatched us in 5 games.

Enrique: That takes us to the off-season, which for us was relatively uneventful. Our most important order of business was of course, the re-signing of Shawn Marion who, along with Vince Carter, made countless sacrifices to the team in trying to figure out the best gameplan for our team. We also brought back Thomas Hamilton, a new face in Jahidi White, and an old one in all time Grizz great, Brad Daugherty. Training Camp was ok, the emotional wear of last season seemed to take a toll on Vince, and after a couple of talks with him, making sure he knew his role, he came out in pre-season and assuaged our fears by looking like his normal self. After that, just about everyone looked good coming out of TC. There was an unexpected improvement that came from 3rd year guard Bobby Simmons, who came into camp looking focused and ready to make a mark.

Enrique: Alright, that's it for me yapping away, any questions?

Random Reporter: Last season was a bit of a strange one, as just about every Grizz heard his name mentioned in trade rumors. One guy was a bit of a surprise...young big man Pau Gasol. Is there a concern that he may not be the kind of player you need right now, or has his recent TC solidified his spot as a key part of this franchise? Also, what's the latest news on the Grizz's long-time achilles heel, the PG spot? Is hometown hero Steve Nash still the guy?

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: Do you hold any regrets trading away Baron Davis (who's turned into a Top 5 point guard) for what's been a bit of a slow development for the #1 pick, Pau Gaso so farl?

To be fair, our team policy is that as we receive interest, we float out players' names. Pau's name was out there, because unlike any of our other players, he comes at a rookie contract. We made that clear to him and as you can see he, like Marion and Carter before him, is still here. Sometimes rumors are just that

After acquiring Nash, we stuck him in to a regular starting role of around 34 minutes before acquiring Terrell Brandon after what he showed was inadequate. So coming into last season, we developed a plan to help him out, and he posted near career highs in most of his important efficiency stats. We were very happy with his play and expect more of the same this season.

Absolutely not, should we? If you'll recall, BD was once a player who was also thought to be developing slowly. But besides that, we knew when we drafted Baron, he would be an All-Star level point guard, and we knew when we traded him away he would also be that. Here were my comments when asked about it then:

One thing that has sort of come about as a result of the trade for Pau, is the idea that there was some sort of issue or disappointment that we had with Baron, and I'd just like to clear that up. Baron Davis was etched in as our PG of the future and we were 100% happy with him. We know he will do great things in Philly, and expect him to be an All-Star level PG. However, we saw Pau as a player who was going to be a part of the next set of great big men and we saw an opportunity to get him and we pulled the trigger. There were also financial implications that we believe are more viable going in this direction

EDIT: Grammar
Literally nothing has changed from then. We've seen flashes of the player Pau can and will be and we know that we simply don't have to lean on him night in and night out with the talent we have on this roster
