2003-2004 Boston Celtics Media Days

Post by Conroy »

GM Roy: Welcome back, we here in Boston are rejuvenated and ready to get the season underway. We've got a young team and some new faces, and we really like the way the team has come together.

We started with the draft and desperately tried to move up into the lotto but had zero success, but we were pretty excited to land Frenchman Boris Diaw. He can do a little bit of everything and we beleive will grow into an important piece for us. Then came the most dreaded time of the year for us in the front office in Boston...RFA. We always seem to screw it up, and probably did this year as well. We were going to let the market dictate Stevie and decide from there whether to match or not, so we used our cap space trying to overpay two young guys we felt had room to grow. Jason Terry and Calvin Booth both signed offer sheets and we were immediately able to work out a S&T for Terry...Booth, we had great talks with the Spurs organization but at the end of the day he was too important a piece for them. Francis did not like the single offer he received and we ignored his market value and overpaid him to ensure he came back. All in all we were pretty happy with how it all worked out.

Then came Training Camp, we had mix feelings here, because everyone but Francis (and Terry with a different organization) had a great camp last year. The results came in and we are very pleased. Steven Hunter had another amazing camp and has turned himself into a bonafide starter, and he has done it all himself improving his game when he was drafted this was the common opinion on him

Hunter initially seems no different from the numerous other defense-only big men that litter the bottom of the FA market, but his athleticism could help him maintain a roster spot much like Jerome James of the Nets. He's far cry from a possible Zo replacement, so don't read too much into this selection at all.
And that's not a knock on J2's draft preview it was spot on analysis, but Hunter has hinted that he set the bar high and used this as motivation to do just that and try to be a Zo replacement. And defensively he's almost there.

John Salmons and Boozer continue their improvement and Boris did what Boris does, slightly improved everywhere. We are very excited to watch this young team grow. We aim to start with the Atlantic Division and plan on being back at the top of the Eastern Conference.

I'll know open the floor to any questions.

Generic Wolves Reporter: While your frontcourt is full of promise, it's hard to tell where your guardplay will end up. Are you overly concerned about the potential of JET and Francis, or are you content on rolling them out with your young forwards and center?

Your team had a great overall camp, but do you think you are still another good TC away from developing your players to form a team that can return to the Finals?

Dr. Rocker from the Cleveland Rocker: Congratulations on a good season and offseason. Following up with the nameless, faceless reporter, you have promising talent in the backcourt, but not enough punch. Will you be looking for trades to help realize some of the potential in the now, or does the relative weakness of the East through the top with the Hawks and Raptors at the top leave you content to wait it out since it is easy to be good and impossible to be great?
There's no "I" in team, but you can find "Eat me" if you push it too far.

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: What was the thought process on bringing Steve Francis back, even if he turned down the offers he got during RFA? Were you prepared to move on after striking a deal for Jason Terry? What was the reaction to bringing him back for the rest of the guys in the locker room?

A run for a title? I think a lot would have to go our way. We were a .500 ball club last year we added a talented scorer and our guys improved but they'd have to grow up a lot during the season to make a serious run. Our goal is to win the division and that would set us up nicely in the playoffs. But most of these guys playoff experienced are nothing more than getting swept by the eventua champs...thanks for the question

We are in a unique position with our guards I really like them both. They can score and their speed will disrupt other teams backcourts. Right now I want to roll them out there with our bigs. If we can find a true distributor I hope it wouldn't be at the expense of either JET or Stevie

J2: No disrespect meant to Hunter, I just called it as I saw it at the time. His rapid improvement's been incredible, honestly. Anyway, lost in all the news is Jay Williams. After a solid rookie season, he seems to have fallen off a bit. How does he fit into the equation now that Terry's in the mix? Also, is there any worry that having two combo guards with near-identical playing styles might create confusion?

Well our starting Center, Power Forward, and Small Forward are in their 2nd and 3rd seasons. So I'd say we would need to them to continue their growth and maybe add one more piece. It's extremely difficult to make it the finals regardless of the situation, right now I'd say we have a lot of nice pieces but we need at least one of them to turn into a perrennial All-Star before we start thinking of the Finals.

I'm always looking for trades and I have some picks that could be used if the right deal comes along. We just want to continue to improve, we had a strong start to the regular season last year then faltered at th end and got swept out of the playoffs. We want to win the division win a playoff series or two gain some experience and be the best version of ourselves we can be.

Stevie has had to grow up fast in our organization he was only 24 or 25 last year with a team full of rookies and sophomores. He become the mentor to all of them and they were ecstatic to see him back. I went into RFA looking to acquire as much talent as possible. I looked at the available FAs left and we just decided lets bring back Francis no matter what. He had 1 bad TC, he can still score, he can rebound well for his position, and we like the guy. It was always our plan to bring him back.

We've always been an inside focused team. I think right now we would put the ball in Francis' hands and tell him to take it to the rack. We have faith he can get to the rim and either finish or be fouled. And if not Hunter and Boozer would have a great chance of cleaning up any misses.

Henry Yates, Houston Chronicle.

Rumor has it the franchise was interested in acquiring Chris Webber last season when the Rockets were struggling. Are you guys still looking to make a big trade to add a star player in that caliber?
