This is actually a very interesting question for me. I have never been in the tax and have always done my best to stay under the max cap. Some seasons haven't been great for me while other saw some success. But I tried to build my team through the draft just so I can have lower cap hits. But in recent seasons, I have either given out big contracts or traded for big contracts. Now my young guys that I drafted are coming up on the end of their rookie deals so I will have decisions to make. Should my players keep progressing, I would be willing to get into the tax since they are still young enough to keep developing and should hopefully bring me a title or two. But I do only see myself ever being in the tax 1-2 seasons. If I don't win by that second season being over the tax, then I would probably start looking to offload some contracts and get younger again. But again, as someone who has never been in the tax, I'm not exactly sure how I will go about handling it. It'll be new territory so I'm interested to see what my game plan will be for when that time comes in a couple of seasons.

So, I would be able to go maybe 50 points into the tax for a title. On a contender, maybe 20 points. Basically, stuff I know I can earn back in a season. I'm not going to handicap my team for multiple seasons to go all-in on one.

Everyone says, "the title is everything." I don't think that's true; if there's one thing I've noticed in the league, it's that GMs absolutely HATE to lose players "for nothing" and having an unpaid tax bill puts you at risk at doing that. My personal guess is that most GMs would not be willing to trade a single title for "having to lose a player for nothing." One year of tax isn't too bad - it's when you start hitting high levels of repeater tax that it becomes crippling. I think the tax changes the nature of dynasties in the league - it doesn't prevent them, because good GMs will find ways to win within the confines of the rules - but it means you see roster turnover on championship-caliber squads almost every year (look at the Bucks), which gives (false?) hope to other teams.

I'm pretty sure that since I joined the league I'm the only one to be in tax jail and keep playing.
The Scott guy, I think that was his name, set up the Pistons dynasty and walked off.
That was a boss move though.
I didn't really understand jail until I got there.
It was trash, but I think I was about 120 points in and I got there with a losing team.
So I'll pay a million for a winner.
I just think I learned that it's not necessary to do so.
The Spurs are paying for this season, but they're probably one of the biggest favorites we've seen since the reset, and they already won a title with this core.
I would pay to contend, but not as much.
The tax forces you to reshape your roster.
Some of the better GMs reload rather than rebuild.

In the old league, I ran up tax bills of 202 points and 274 points which led to titles so I think I can safely say I'm willing to go all-in for a win. I would like to try to do it again in this league but my build has struggled over the past several seasons so maybe in the 1990s.

How deep would you go for a contender that's not the favorite?
Same, if I think I can close the gap with a creative gameplan, I'm willing to still rack up a huge bill and take my chances. It would definitely make the season more interesting for me.

What implications does the tax have on dynasties in our league?
I think GMs will break up their teams earlier to avoid being in tax jail for too long so the tax serves its purpose of evening the league over time. I'm still in favor of redistributing the collected tax to non-tax teams to incentivize more training or the building of future super teams but I'm not quite sure where the league is at with tax reform.

To me, it's about winning a title. Simple as that. I'd be willing to go deep into tax for a title. That would need to make me the clear cut favorite. If I'm not a favorite, I'm trying to avoid the tax. Now, if I were like some of these teams that have a huge bank of points then I'd be less worried. As someone who has been a less than top tier team, I hope the tax man cometh and destroy the top teams, but the amount of points that are available throughout the year, it doesn't seem to be the case. People can hold onto teams for 3-5 seasons and manage the tax before breaking up the core.

It depends on the make up of the team. The return has to be worth paying the tax. Whether it's a title or getting to the Finals. A championship isn't a sure thing no matter the make up of your team or tax situation.

How deep would you go for a contender that's not the favorite?

IDK. It really depends on the situation. If I feel I could out gameplan my opponent in the post season with said roster I would go in but not too deep.

It could go either way. You could blow everything up or could have player turnover like the Bucks and continue your dynasty with plugging in players the fits the teams identity.
