1989 Knicks Pre Season Presser

Post by NY_Magic_Garrett »

[Scene]:
Jam packed press room, seemingly a million different conversations happening at once, but they are all about the same thing....its been all over the NYT for weeks...Everyone is holding one of the papers...BUCK BETRAYS THE BIG BOSS, THE BUCK TURNS HIS BACK, BLAZER BUCK, F#$% BUCK..you know the ones
  • "How are they going to spin this Buck fiasco?"
"Who even is going to walk out there and talk to us?"
"Has anyone heard from the Boss since the Buck deal?"
    "I heard he's dead..thats just the rumor.."
"They didnt whack him...stop it. That wasnt him the other night. He will walk out, he loves the drama"
--- door opens----

Out walks someone new, a fresh face, one no one has seen before. Wait, is that..Bruce Wayne..He steps to the podium

Hi everyone, I know you all have a lot of questions, first, I have some things to address. My name is Bruce Wayne. I know you all know me here in Gotham as an industrialist, philanthropist, and owner of Wayne Enterprises, but now you will know we has the owner and GM of the New York Knicks. It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me. I couldn't bare to watch this city's favorite team go the way of the crime in this city. We must clean it and rebuild it. All of it

First order of business, the Big Boss is dead. He was found at his restaurant last night and is mafia reign over this team and city are over. It looks like that he made promises he couldn't keep to more than just Buck. I will have no other comment on the open investigation

Second agenda item, Buck Williams. He hurt this franchise. He hurt this city. He walked away from millions of dollars to not play for this team. That is the truth. The truth is is also that the Big Boss front office put far too many resources and assets into a plan that didn't have a signature on paper. Buck had seen too much from the Big Boss I think. Hell, he couldn't have moved further from the city.

Buck and Big Boss left many holes in this team's immediate future, so I had a chat with him before his demise and he was happy to turn over full ownership of the team to me and be relieved of the duties. Believe it or not..thats the truth..but sometimes the truth isn’t good enough. Sometimes people deserve more. Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded.

Now what?

Now we rebuild. Fantastic start by drafting Rony Seikaly. The exact type of player to anchor the new identity here in New York. We also brought in one of the best big men in this league, Mike Gminski. We expect him to be a great mentor for Rony and for those 2 to be a force down low. We also used the extra money we had dedicated for Buck to bring in another big man vet in Bill Cartwright. We are going to slow the pace and make some of these high powered offenses play our game inside. The Garden will not be a circle on many calendars this year.

Johnny Dawkins also appears to be reaching the potential the last admin saw in him. Happy we could find a diamond in the rough coming out of that failed strategy. We also surrounded him with vet help in Brad Davis and Darnell Valentine.

Getting back into the 1990 draft next year is a priority for this front office and will be holding the draft pick we have this year from the 6ers tight.

All this being said, you will be seeing a ton of big, slow, fundamental basketball out of New York this year as we reestablish ourself. Maybe even some lineups with Gminski, Seikaly, Cartwright on the floor at the same time to really pack a punch, control the pace, and the boards.

Before I turn it over to questions, I do just have one comment to the front office over there in Portland...we will not forget how you negotiated in the night...know there is new leadership here and I am vengeance. I am the night.

Anyway, sorry everyone, questions?
Welcome to the Garden!

If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!

With not having your first round pick this season, are you all in on winning this year? Or are you considering moving a piece like Gminski to get future assets even if that causes losses which will improve your pick, which Portland owns?

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: Given that you drafted Seikley, was more determined to improve his game during the offseason after seeing the Knicks sign Gminski & Cartwright? Will one of those bigs be made available during the course of the year to open up minutes for Seikley?

Steve Duin, the Oregonian:

What role do you see for Derrick McKey and his unique skill set (size with perimeter defense) in the Knicks' future?

This might be a low point for this storied franchise since you took over as GM.
How do you see yourself climbing out of this hole, and how long will it take?

How will you respond to the Gminski injury? I hear there are some affordable options on the trade market that can give your team a boost.
